FWA The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

    THE
    2021
    FANTASY WRESTLING ALLIANCE AWARDS

It is the moment that our small corner of the internet has been waiting for. After a very straightforward nominating and voting process, the results have been counted and verified, and it is now time to reveal the winners of each of the 2021 FWA Awards, following what has been a historic year for the fed.

Thank you to the following twenty-two members who provided a set of votes; BattleTank, Comeback Kid, Cyrus Truth, Dubb, ETE, Franchise, Gipper, Jam, JB, Jimmy King, Jon, Man, OMB, Oz, Rawr, Shawn, Smooth Jazz Wolf, Sulley, SupineSaiyan, TGO, Tig and Tommy!

Just a reminder of how this is going to work. As you will all recall, you were asked to provide a winner and a runner-up for each category. The winners of the awards have been decided on the total number of 'winner' votes received, with ties then broken by the number of 'runner-up' votes received. So, if you received one 'winner' vote and nineteen 'runner-up' votes... unlucky. Where there is still a tie after the runner-up votes have been considered, then there will be a joint winner. The winners will get to enjoy the awesome banners created by Comeback Kid!

The awards will be posted in batches, but I am not providing a schedule because that creates expectation and I never live up to expectation. I will include positions for those which received at least one 'runner-up' vote for each award. If you are not on there, please do not be disheartened, remember that you did well to make it onto the ballot in the first place, given the high level of competition.

Now, without further adieu, let's begin with the three new 'Brand' awards!

Re: The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

Fallout MVP was such a hard category to pick in with so many standouts, including two new world champs who both were in the dominant two teams in the tag division also. JAY! and Toner edged those two for me (I think) because of the seg and character work over the two cycles. Konchu also this is true of and I think Hao stands out for being the character on Fallout who has best managed to weave his story between both promos and shows. In the end Toner is a worthy winner for what is really a monster run of promos dating back to BIB as well as some of the strongest seg work in the fed.

Cyrus was my vote for Meltdown MVP thanks to consistently strong promo work (I think on every show) and the tail end of his excellent NA championship run. Again a very worthy winner and a talented writer. It'll be interesting to see how these outcomes look versus those for character of the year.

Nice to see CWA repped on brand of the year!

Re: The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

Fallout MVP: I gave it to Danny Toner & had Konchu Hao as runner-up but it was certainly tight. Chris Peacock, Mike Parr (underappreciated for sure), Randy Ramon all would've been great candidates. I gave it to Toner for the best run of promos & great segment work but Hao had the best character arc & some good segment work which he's already continuing in 2022.

Meltdown MVP: I gave this one to MvH for an incredibly strong run minus a couple blips in Kennedy/Crowe/Truth. My #2 was Crowe who also had a great run capped off with a wonderful NA title victory and more consistent segment work in the Fall Season. Respect to Truth for winning it who had a great set of promos but probably slipped through the cracks for me on a bit less segment work & MvH winning the series. But deffo respect for the win.

Brand of the Year: get rid of this award

Open Promo: Think this was an obvious one though props to Jiggy who also had his DJPW return series that should've got him a vote or two. Easy win for SS though who capped it off with his holiday open promos.

Newcomer: Tons of great newcomers. I gave it to Chris Peacock/Man but I think I had Crowe second and it couldve been tighter if Crowe had been here from the start of the year. I imagine Man being eligible last year hurt his chances as people didn't want to vote for him again this year. But dude has been nuts and greatly transitioned into the efed section.

Mod of the Year: Yall getting less promo reviews out of me. I know who voted.

Non-Mod of the Year: Yall getting less promo reviews out of me. I know who voted.

Most Improved: I think I had Tig #1 and OMB #2 here. Tig is on paper the #1 guy on the roster for me and he wasnt really in that conversation before. OMB has had a lot of good victories and an X title reign to his name though so much deserved.

Re: The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

Open promo I know is sort of like the equivalent of Best Picture at the Oscars so I won't gloat too much... though excellent contributions from ETE, Sulley, and Shake (through his contributions to mono no aware ) this year alongside Jiggy as mentioned by Jon.

I agree that rookie of the year had a lot to choose from this year with great new editions to the fed like Tommy, JB, Dubb, Blaine, and lately Gurry who was just about too late to make these awards I think. I went for BattleTank here but it was a tough choice for me between him and Dubb. Man obviously has had a fantastic year but I think being nominated twice shouldn't be a thing haha. I agree that the level he's at now is quite remarkable tho.

Mod of the year I know is like the equivalent of Best Director at the Oscars so I won't gloat too much. But well done to my fellow mods and also rans who also did things this year.

Non-mod pf the year is a funny one because Jon obviously is a mod now but for nine months of the year he was alongside Tig as the biggest contributor to the show and the community as a whole so I think he should be higher here. CBK has contributed massively to the shows on WC this year with his graphic work, alongside Jiggy for the videos and poster-work that he's done. These contribute massively to the shows and the authenticity of the show as a whole. AON again is high in this after winning it last year and he definitely helped contribute to the CWA run with match-writing and segs, and the large number of characters he trots out for various things has helped a lot of matches and battle royales go ahead on pay-per-views. Tig I think is the winner of this though thanks to his reviews, both in prose and podcast form. I look forward to Tig's thoughts on promos and shows almost as much as the shows themselves which was also true of Jon before he became a mod. Tig's a really important person to have in the community and thoroughly deserves recognition for the non-mod work he does for FWA.

I also went with Tig for most improved because I agree with Jon as he's now in conversations about the best writer in the fed, definitely in my top five and I imagine most other people's. He's stepped up and beyond the main event level and dragged the quality of it up (just like in the tag division in the first half of the year) so that's where my vote has gone. OMB is a writer who has certainly come on creatively and has made some strides in terms of presentation also, so is a perfectly valid winner for this award.

Look forward to the next batch.

Re: The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

I gave moment of the year to Devin Golden carving Alyster Black which was a huge character moment for both and has also contributed to some of my favorite reads in the aftermath. Randy Ramon winning the world title got my #2.

Title reign of the year was a foregone conclusion. Cyrus dominated the NA Championship for the bulk of the year and has been the only lasting champion in a year of a lot of title switches. I think for a while it looked like he would never lose the belt tbh. I had MVH #2 and on paper she should probably be higher up given the 7 runner-up votes. Strong match against Bell & a very close call against Chris Kennedy with some fun moments throughout including some quality angles on Fallout and a great brawl with Kennedy.

Return of the year goes to the man who won the world title and continued his BIB streak. I had Nova Diamond second. While he hasn't been mega active, Oz still won G.O., was a top finish in CC, and had a great win at BIB. I think he also finished #1 or thereabouts in Fallout rankings for the first chapter. Arguably would have won this if the return hadnt been short lived.

Re: The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

So that concludes the 2021 FWA Awards ceremony! Apologies for the delay in collating and posting the results. However a huge congratulations are due to all of those who won awards and those who were nominated. To reiterate earlier sentiments, 2021 was a top year for the fed and it’s already looking like 2022 might be even better. Peace and love x

Re: The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

Okay, let's go over this one by one.

I'm practically for Toner what OMB is for Ramon so I voted Toner for Fallout MVP, he put out banger promos, was the most over dude overall, got involved in good angles and matches. He took the ball and ran with it. Peacock was my runner-up for the same stuff, he was involved in a lot of things and shined through all of them. The other nominees pretty much did the same but Toner and then Peacock stood out more for me in terms of being such a good presence throughout the lifetime of the purple brand.

I went Cyrus and then MVH for similar reasons. It felt like Cyrus had a match every week and he was consistently delivering it each show. His storylines weren't as meaty as what Cyrus did with Eli Black but from my view, Meltdown went with more of a competition & wrestling based approach opposed to its counterpart so Truth embodied that more, same with MVH. I was sad that there were only 2 spots because I couldn't vote for Crowe who grabbed the brand by its balls within the short time he had with the company so far.

I think Fallout was the clear winner for the Brand of the Year. They brought so many fun new things and concepts onto the table while delivering amazing shows consistently. They were experimental and it's safe to say most of the experiments and risks paid off. The roster was built so strong in the first day and maybe one flaw that came with it that every match felt like a banger and if every match feels like a banger than no match feels like a banger. But I feel like that's suffering because of success by DJ Khaled than anything else. Meltdown came second, it had its own unique approach during Sulley era, the heavies of the roster did phenomenal work and the Jon era shows even more improvements with each week. I also considered The Warehouse but even I can be a homer so far.

For Open Promo, I actually went Sulley because of the stellar Ground Zero work he had done, OMB second because he practically lived in the 24/7 thread the whole year. In hindsight, I should've considered SS but for some reason my brain didn't register Mono No Aware or his latest special as open promos so I might've snubbed him there, hope he can find in his very kind and forgiving heart to forgive me.

When I saw the Rookie OTY result I was very surprised. Not because Crowe is an undeserving winner, he is very deserving but Peacock was something else for a first-time character. Then I found out Peacock was also nominated in last year's rookies so it made more sense. I personally went with Peacock first and Crowe second because of my ignorance of last years nominees. Congrats to BT for his win.

For mod of the year, I think for the success that the Fallout had been so far, SS and Man were going to be my top 2. Deciding between them was harder, Man is a superb match-writer while I like nearly everything SS does in terms of angles (and even matches). Ultimately I went with SS because he's also reviving CWA on the side while doing all that work for Fallout while also consistently promoing as MVH. Sorry Man but I'm contractually obliged to stick by SS in a lot of things.

If Jon hadn't been made a mod then he would've won the Non-Mod by *landslide*. I wouldn't bother with picking a runner-up because Jon's victory would've been just that clear. His promo reviews, engagement with the community, even the change of tone he brought to the fed with his unique style was more than enough for him to win this award like, three times in the same year. He was so good at doing non-mod stuff that he eventually became a mod. So, that nullified it for me. And I went Tig as my winner, The Irish Gaijin, his Discord activity, his promo and show reviews, more than a worthy winner for me in Jon's technical absence. CBK was my runner-up for his insanely detailed reviews and his graphics, plus he's a cool-ass dude.

Most Improved was an easy choice, OMB went up so many levels that if Tig practically didn't become a GOAT contender then this would probably the most one-sided category in the entire awards. I felt like Tig always had something like this in him, he just needed stability and consistency to get enough engagement to turn into the Top 3 writer in the fed he is right now. While I felt like OMB legit improved rather than got the chance to show more, which was the case with Tig, I felt like. Still I named him as the runner-up. It was an easy category for me to rank.

Two world title wins were my top 2 for the moment of the year because yeah, two banging characters winning their first world titles will always be the best moments, even though how great of a character moment it was for Golden to carve Alyster. I went the opposite of the actual winner and runner-up duo. MVH's win was in the main event of the biggest show plus it actually marked the end of an era when Sulley lost the title. So yeah, that felt bigger to me for those reasons even though Ramon's moment was very big as well.

Cyrus' NA title reign with all those defenses and the promo quality was an obvious winner which I agree with 16 other people who voted for it. There's not much to say there, really, overall the deserved winner. It didn't only highlight Cyrus as a workhorse, it also gave people like Eli Black and Cap Fantasy the spotlight they deserved. My runner-up was MVH's world title reign, she was involved in fun segments in the Kennedy feud and had the Bell match, put it slightly above J. J. JAY! for that reason. Shows how just one successful title defence can improve things. (sorry jon that was offensive maybe)

I think me and Jon have different interpretations of the 'Return of the Year' award because it was about the moment of return for me compared to 'Character of the Year who returned this year', that's why I went with Rondo first and me second, not including Kennedy because it was him normally returning and going 'hey guys I'm back', there's nothing wrong with that but surprise returns are coveted for a reason. But yeah, I absolutely agree with Jon about his Kennedy points.

GR - TxR sweep was all well deserved (even though my heart breaks for Cosmic Playground which I had as a runner-up in its own category), think I voted for them in each of those categories. Also if Gipper can collect the Show of the Year award for himself then I'm claiming victory too, I also won my match unlike Reagan Cole. GR vs GS, Fallout 007 and Gabby's Mental Boom were my runner-ups for the other categories. GR vs GS was almost as good as the TxR feud, just missing out some of the highest points for me. Fallout 007 had the amazing Agent 0024K stuff and Ramon's ultimate victory while ETE did an amazing job freshening Gabrielle's character up.

Tag Team of the Year, perhaps biased, I went with TxR because I don't think Golden Rock could've made this Tag Team boom in this year's without TxR. I think Golden Rock's ultimate triumphs and continuation beyond the TxR feud, allowing them to have another banger feud with Gang Stars gave them the victory and it's very understandable. I also went with them as my runner-ups there. I just think without TxR's escalation of the stakes, we wouldn't have reached this level and that's my reasoning with going with them.

For the Character of the Year, I went with Danny Toner and I felt pretty confident he would win. I must say I'm surprised he didn't but I also understand J. J. Jay!'s victory here, the boy completely shaped the new meta and the landscape of the company and that's a very big thing to do. Not to mention he's entertaining as hell as a character and as a promo. He did all of that without not going above X title, he's really just getting staring to get his claws in real big-time shit with his newly-emerging Danny Toner feud. The sky is the limit for him. But like I said, I ultimately went with Danny because he was, by far, the most over character in the fed the full year, a Top 3 promo in each show he had been involved in, was involved in the match of the year, the feud of the year, the storyline of the year was the Fallout MVP. MVH was my runner-up because everything felt like it built up to her big moment and she did all of that successfully. Like I said in the previous thread, she felt like the protagonist of FWA.

Promo of the Year award is I suppose sort of like Best Picture in the Oscars so I won't gloat too much...just kidding, I'm proud of what I've done, so proud that I voted for myself and then felt guilty when I saw that I won. Then I did the math again and realized I would've won regardless so that was a moment of relief. Thanks a lot to everyone who voted for me, this is surreal really. It was a very good year for the promos and I think you can tell that from the vote distribution? Winning with 5 first place votes where 22 people voted...that's insane, but I know I deserved it. Hopefully the new year will bring many Oz promos opposed to whatever what I did this year.

Mucho gracias to the mods who didnt just organize this awards but also ran this fed for the year, lets have an even better one. Cheers!

Re: The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

I had the same Character of the Year & Runner-Up as Oz. MvH was so good, we all basically assumed she would win CC and become World Champion which is nuts considering the quality of people that entered the CC. Consistently involved in storylines & pushing angles with her character. Stellar writing. And absolutely loved how her character became intertwined with so many others over the year. I think if she hadn't lost the belt to Chris Kennedy (as a result of an unfortunately risky promo), she'd probably have a stronger claim. The 6 runner-ups make it pretty obvious that she should probably be higher there. Danny Toner was a no brainer for me, and that's why I gave him MVP for Fallout as well. He didn't end up winning the singles world title, which is a blemish (though given my own lack of major success, I guess that's nothing) but he had an incredible tag team run with TxR including winning the tag titles and being involved in one of the best stories all year, consistently sent in great segments, and produced some of the best promos all year on a show-by-show basis. Really wild run. When it comes to nailing what I believe is a great promo in terms of combining match focus/character work/storytelling, I think Tig is bar none #1 w/ Danny Toner. I'm very excited to have a 1v1 match with him.

Obviously very grateful to have won with Uncle. I didn't really expect it given my inconsistency result wise, but it's definitely cool considering at some point I was quite ready to drop him & move on to a more serious character Man pushing for a feud with me (the best feud I've had in efedding), a lot of compliments from other writers in the fed & a sudden burst of inspiration at CC all led to me carrying on, and I'm really grateful I did. It definitely changed my outlook on efedding as a whole and I've learned to take losses less personally and enjoy writing more for writing's sake (without sacrificing my enjoyment of competition). Thanks to all who voted for me, it's very appreciated.

And thanks to Man for running the awards <3

Re: The 2021 Fantasy Wrestling Alliance Awards Ceremony

Congrats to all the winners. And thank you Man for doing an amazing job rolling this out.

Now that I can breathe after this hellacious run of shows and promos ... some thoughts on 2021 awards.

I gave Fallout MVP to J.J. JAY! I felt no one encompassed better the identity and character of Fallout than JJJ. He and Fallout felt made for one another and it showed in the first chapter. I gave Peacock runner-up solely due to the amount of heavy-hitter matches he was in all year. Dude was THE workhorse of the show and carried it in a wrestling sense. Danny Toner and Krash were not far behind, same for Summers, Parr, R3, and Aly Black. There really is A LOT of depth on Fallout's roster.

I gave Meltdown MVP to Michelle, with Cyrus in 2nd. Michelle seemed to depict the character of Meltdown most. She has this icy, bruising personality that seemed to take shape in Meltdown's manner in chapter 2. Cyrus gets runner-up from me for same reasons as Peacock ... just a workhorse. I think Chris Crowe is a worthy choice in the runner-up spot, too.

Brand of the Year to CWA! I think it was fun to have another fed with a different feel/vibe than FWA. Not to say FWA's vibe is bad, but it was cool to see CWA pop up in the manner in which it did.

OMB for Most Improved from me. Jimmy King was close. I think Jimmy found something/tapped into something with the comedy content.

For rookie, I went Chris Crowe solely due to time he had. Jeremy Best might've taken it if he joined sooner.

Moment of the Year is tough. I went with R3 winning the gold, followed by Michelle winning the gold. If you wanted to go non-title-win, it'd probably be Golden glass.

Promo of the Year was really tough but Nova's from Anni Show stuck with me for WEEKS. It was the last promo I read for that match and i honestly thought it'd be between Ramon and Peacock for the win. Couldn't see much in either. Then read Nova's and just knew. Grading backed it up. Sometimes you read a promo and it hits in some way. This one did that.

For angle, I went with Gabby. I think that storyline was probably the most emotional one all year and deserves some accolades.

For feud of the year, I went with JJJ/Peacock. That, in some ways, topped Golden Rock-TxR. Man and Jon deserve a lot of credit. A concern coming out the draft and starting the brand split was the fact that people always viewed the NA title above the X title. They needed just two months to elevate the X title to, at worst, equal with the NA title. It's easily the greatest X Championship feud I can remember. They also got my Match of the Year, possibly the greatest X title match ever (Golden-KAIZEN at the 2015 Anniversary Show comes to mind but honestly I don't think it competes with Cosmic Playgound cuatros)

I went TxR for tag team but think this could go either way for runner-up between them and Gang Stars. If you prefer a team wrestling as a team in matches, Gang Stars probably takes it. If you prefer a team in engaging angles/storylines, TxR fit that even if they didn't have as many actual tag matches in 2021.

For character, I went J.J. JAY! here as well. I think JJJ has expanded what we in the FWA think of as an e-fed character. He has broadened the possibilities and inspired people to take pre-existing characters further out there (see Golden, as an example of J.J. JAY's inspiration). The box is a lot wider, in other words, if a box even exists at all anymore. J.J. JAY! is the reason for that, and Character of the Year is a fitting recognition of the trailblaze he performed.

Chris Peacock in runner-up for the workhorse nature, but I nearly nearly nearly put Danny Toner or Michelle von Horrowitz here. Both are excellent shouts. Krash probably would've been fifth for me. Then maybe the Sulley character, who while not enjoying success in 2021 still made for interesting angles on Fight Night AND Meltdown. While I don't think Golden deserved to be on the Meltdown MVP list since he really didn't contribute enough to Meltdown shows -- and while he couldn't be Fallout MVP since he wasn't on the roster -- I do think somewhere on the back end of top 10 on this list is where he could've fit. But he should've been behind a bevy of people.
