That match was rough and the mist was badly telegraphed. Losing to an inside cradle too? I got nothing good to say about that other than it was funny when Arn fell.
Agreed with all this. Dynamite is Tony Khan’s booking except for the one segment a week where Cody’s neck tattoo takes the book.

Yeah definitely glad he’s found something he’s VERY suited for.

a reverse from 2019 AEW where I felt like Cody’s angles were the only interesting ones going on.

    Sting rules.

    Very Enjoyable show overall.

Only thing I thought was missing was maybe a promo from Mox and Kingston for Friday, or one from either of the two teams in the trios match, but whatever. It happens.

I liked the 1st match but i felt disappointed that they were saving stuff for later. Obviously it makes sense but my lizard brain want 100% from each right away. However as a teaser for future matches it was fucking excellent.

Mjf vs pillman jr was great. Favorite match of the night due to the fantastic build. Loved the match itself too! Mjf is a all time great in the making. Perhaps when his career is over with you can even argue he is a goat contender.

Black vs cody was lame outside of a few big moves. Match was poorly booked outside of black winning. But even then it was by a roll up.

Darby and sting vs ftr was a forgettable but decent match. Same with tge main event.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

Bryan vs. Kenny was amazing, to me the best match in this company's history. The psychology was on a completely different level than the usual Kenny fare and they actually cut out a lot of Kenny's BS that usually turn me off in his matches like his facial expressions and bad acting and pretty much wrestled a straight up, serious match. Bryan is the best wrestler alive and it only took one match to show that in the full force that has been missing for a long time. There's no question Bryan is the best wrestler in AEW and I would argue the biggest star. It's gonna be interesting how they handle this rematch and with Page and Punk both in the background they have viable options.

Punk is a zillion times more enjoyable of a promo in this setting as a rah rah good guy than his 20 minute smartest guy in the room monologues he was cutting in WWE last we saw him. I have to give him credit. He could have easily had a Cody-esque overdramatic return and feud with someone that got "heat" but his current character feels 100% natural and real. Eventually they'll work up to a grudge but right now? He's doing about the best job possible in said background while helping out the young guys. His run has been some of his best work in general.

I actually think they should let Cody stay the exact same as he is, only change people he's facing and make slight tweaks to the Nightmare Family. He's a perfect heel for this AEW audience to get behind regardless of who he's facing. He and MJF both get legit heat in 2021 which many thought was impossible. The match wasn't great but this program has made Black look like a bigger deal than he ever was in his career before. That said the mist was really bad. Not a fan of that finish at all but at least he won.

I was the one disappointed in the MJF/Pillman match. After MJF pretty much crossed the line in his promo, we needed to see Pillman come out super pissed and beat the shit out of MJF. Thar didn't happen and it made this whole feud seem just lame. Pillman is a dead babyface IMO at this point. MJF isn't a great worker in the ring and this didn't go anywhere near as far as it should have.

The tag match was ok, I will always love Sting and he looked great, which FTR deserve a lot of credit for but it wasn't as special as it could have been.

As I said before, Miro would be my #2 behind Bryan in AEW in terms of being an all around talent and he continues to be an excellent, excellent champion.

I thought the main event was a real struggle, arguably flat out bad. They really did them a disservice putting them in the main event over Bryan/Omega. I know they had good intentions but it just wasn't going to work out. That said the wrestling also wasn't great. Britt just isn't very good between the ropes and Soho wasn't going to be the one to drag the best out of her, especially considering the fact that this felt like such a throwaway title match. Shame that it didn't end with the Bryan/Omega because I think this would be remembered as one of the best shows of the year, and it was still very good but I did think the finish fading out took it down a notch.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

First thought is this was a smart move to have a TV special than a PPV. While every match had build to it, I think if this was half a PPV I'd be disappointed. But for TV, it's all good. One great match (Omega vs Danielson), one fun match (tag match), two solid/ok matches (womens title, MJF vs Pillman) and one dud (Cody vs Black) and no major angles.

Omega vs Bryan delivered. Not a seven star match or any nonsense like that, but a great, hard-hitting, well laid out match that felt big-time and still left plenty on the table for future matches. Time limit draw was predictable, but the right move. This was very much an ROH Danielson match through and through, especially the way it was paced and laid out, the top notch strike exchanges, top notch limb-work, etc. The visual of Danielson with his chest all busted up and the mouse over his eye was so visceral. Thumbs up.

Cody in full evil kenevil/homelander garb with Brandi getting booed was hilarious. The match was worked like Black was the face, the crowd were treating it that way, but they didn't lean into it and insisted on playing it straight. Unfortunate that Arn slipped on the apron to telegraph that spot but as a match I thought it was another flop on Cody's resume. Guy needs a revamp big-time.

FTR vs Sting/Darby was a fun filler match. I haven't seen much of Pillman Jr but he didn't leave much of an impression tonight - MJF has improved a lot over his AEW tenure though. Britt vs Ruby was OK with a couple nice big spots (avalanche air raid crash, stomp on the steps). Reba screaming "YEEEEEES SMASH HER FACE" had me howling.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

Bryan Danielson is good at this wrestling stuff. Best Dynamite match yet for me, and no issues at all with the time limit draw. Felt like the likely outcome, and I’d sooner take that than some schmoz at the end with Gallows & Anderson getting involved.

That Cody/Black match was a bit of a mess. The mist was probably the perfect set up for Black to kick Cody in the face given Cody is temporarily blinded and unable to defend himself. Pity Black doesn’t have a finisher where he kicks a guy in the face and had to go for the small package instead. Unfortunate slip for Arn too off the apron. Also, has Cody always had that silly cape as part of his attire, or was that new? Never noticed it before, but maybe he’s always had it but just not one that was a mile long.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

For all the talk about this being a PPV quality show (along with Rampage), this felt very ordinary apart from the one match and big crowd.

Bryan and Omega had a great match, something that AEW rarely does for me, and probably should've gone on last as it was the main event and everything afterwards felt like a clear step down. I think it had some odd moments, particularly when they were exchange big moves in a "my turn" sort of way, but this was very thrilling. Everything before the break was excellent. They stuck to doing very limited things like chops and kicks with the occasional big move thrown in and they were able to create a compelling match out of that alone. Everything after escalated in way you'd think it would and saw out the rest of the 30 well enough.

I didn't care for Punk's promo actually. It was still alright to watch because of Punk's delivery but it was still very ordinary and, dare I say, ramblely. He had a collection of what he wanted to say and went through them in a way that way.

Cody vs Black wasn't good. It was hardly bad but Cody is starting to feel like a relic of an old era, despite being one of the bigger stars only months ago and I really can't buy into what Malakai Black is selling. I just see him as a the Dutch kickboxer Tommy End. This corrupted gimmick doesn't suit him physically. He wrestles the same as ever, he looks normal (which would be fine for his pre wwe gimmick) and he lacks the presence for such a character. I'm sure he has all these grand ideas but he doesn't seem to fit them. I totally see why Vince laughed him out to the building. The effort is there but it's just not going to work. Cody got booed by the crowd, which I think is the intention given Cody came out in an attire similar to the Homelander character which I think is a villain (I haven't seen the show myself). And the whole presentation of Cody feels satirical of what is babyface is supposed to be. That can only be done on purpose, right?

FTR vs Sting/Darby was alright. FTR have been dross since showing up in AEW but as this was them pinging about for Sting, this was somewhat fun to watch. Maybe they have found their calling.

Pillman Jr vs MJF was a nothing match. Pillman Jr works like Chris Jericho in 96. He does all the fired up babyface offence but doesn't have the charisma to make it work. It's so bland and dull. MJF is only as good as his opponent. The main event was... I don't have anything on it. It took place. The crowd was more into Britt than Ruby which is both surprising and unsurprising.

Like I said above, this felt like your normal Dynamite with a big crowd and a great opening match.

What I like about the time limit draw is that they didn't end it with a dramatic countdown and someone getting pinned or tapping out just a second or two after the time limit ran out. Sure, they had Bryan attempt to put on the LeBell lock and commentary was playing it up that if the match continued a few seconds more then it would have been over, but we don't know that for sure.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

I'll agree with MC, while Punk's promo was good, he did ramble a lot and I guess that might be one of the negative possibilities about just being unscripted. I don't expect him to have many rambling incidents though, he's still getting back into the groove of things, we gotta be a bit patient as it has been 7 years.

Zero, they couldn't put Bryan/Kenny on last. I know the audience didn't leave after Kenny/Bryan because they had Rampage but in theory and for the fans at home, ending such a big show on a no contest would've been a really poor move. Baker/Ruby was also really hot after that promo they had on Rampage, which may have been in the top 3-5 AEW promos in the company's short history thus far.

Overall, I thought it was a fantastic show. Loved the stage set-up and the lighting (I know some people gave negative feedback regarding the mood lights). Omega/Bryan felt like the shortest 30 minute match in history and left me eager to see more. Actually, shortest 2 hours of my life, just such an easy show to sit through and enjoy. Really jealous of everyone who got to attend, can't wait for them to come to Toronto one day.

I don't think anyone would have been disappointed in the draw closing the show, I think it's more they wanted it to have the crowd at their hottest rather than potentially a bit burned out halfway through a 4 hour show.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

    Quick thoughts:

Bryan Danielson vs. Kenny Omega was a thrilling match but given I had forgotten about the 30 minute time limit, I think I would've felt less excited had I remembered and the finish teasers wouldn't have enticed me as much as it did. Nevertheless, one of the best matches I've seen from AEW and one of the matches I've cared the most about. Very good stuff and having been disappointed by the other recent debuts, happy to see Danielson nail it. Though it helps that he wasn't facing Kazarian I was EXTREMELY worried about Danielson's neck throughout the match. Really well worked stuff.

Miro promo game is too stronk. Dude has been killing it. Looking forward to Miro vs. Guevara.

FTR vs. Sting/Darby - FTR had no business losing that match but at least they have the excuse of playing themselves with the chair spot. That said, I had a ton of fun with this match and I appreciate FTR more and more each time I watch them. They're not at all my favorite tag team in terms of personal interest but I think they work amazing matches, are great characters, and I'm never bored watching them in the ring. Really feel like they got done wrong here losing to Darby/Sting unless there's an intention on shifting that pairing into tag title shots in the future. I would've expected FTR to go over here before moving on to some tag title challenges but this kinda sets them a couple steps back what with the PnP loss as well.

MJF vs. BPJ - Mid match. BPJ just isn't very fun to watch yet and doesn't have enough energy/aggression to his game which I think is necessary given his style.

Cody vs. Black - Just turn Cody heel already. This weird halfway there thing they're doing is just annoying. Im not much for black & white alignments but this pretending people like Cody nonsense has to go. Brandi entering the ring turned me off. If this feud ends with Black putting over Cody clean I'll be pretty disappointed but odds are that's the way it goes and Black's victories will be undone. The thing is, shenanigans aside, I think Cody/Black couldve been a real good match & there were glimpses of that for me but Cody's obsession with all this extra shit cost them. Cody needs to be smart enough & self aware enough to get out of these... very WWE-esque trappings.

Soho vs. Baker - While I thought this match had some slight miscommunication/sloppiness, I still thought it was worked well enough and I enjoyed the bulk of it. The finish was about what I wouldve expected and what I would've booked as well. Easy route to a rematch where they'll be more used to each other, and easy Hayet vs. Soho match set up.

CM Punk promo, Im completely apathetic to Punk at this point. Fair enough on the whole he's happy to be back and just enjoying it. That's cool. But that doesn't mean I'm suddenly going to enjoy aimless promos & dull matches just off the hype of what he once was. Looking forward to seeing him do something interesting and not riding on past reputation.

Good show overall and despite some negatives for a few matches, I think I enjoyed the bulk of it.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

Another reason maybe for putting the Danielson match on first rather than last is timing on the show if some other segments ran long. At least them going on first, they get the full 30 minutes. I guess you could still do a TV time remaining time limit draw (have a vague memory of that happening once before early on?) though in that instance.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

    Other thoughts on the show:

Darby and Sting beating FTR was a tonne of fun and I don't think matters that much to FTR. FTR beat up Sting and Darby last week, only right that the bigger stars and the babyfaces get their revenge. It's not a surprising result considering Sting and Darby are undefeated in tag matches and will probably get a title shot at some point. I need to see them against the Young Bucks but I guess that'll have to be non-title now. The performance of Sting in his 60 is incredible, the guy feels at least 10 years younger and this is now one of my favourite old man wrestler acts ever.

Cody and Black wasn't a good match topped off by a botched interference spot from Arn. I know Cody doesn't want to be an on the nose heel and that's why he enters the ramp from neither tunnel, but I think his act has now gone too stale and too uncool for him to ever get strong babyface reactions again in AEW unless something changes. An American patriot with a reality TV show with his wife who has a stupid neck tattoo and an overindulgent ring entrance and cosplay attire who lacks self awareness is never gonna go down well in New York City, so no surprise they boo'd his ass and favoured the new, edgy character in Black. I haven't missed Brandi's subpar acting skills as a valet during her absence either - we should have known she'd be there this week with the reality TV show debuting.

I think people are being harsh on Britt Vs Ruby, particularly those saying it was a bad match; I thought there were at least two matches considerably weaker than this on the show (MJF/BPJ and Cody/Black). I thought they brought the hate better than most other matches on the show did, they told a good story with Ruby coming close but interference being the swinging factor of the match, and both girls got some good shots in with solid execution on their moves. Think they've left some tricks up their sleeve to have an even better rematch. I was most interested in Ruby's performance as I feel like it's been years since I saw a singles match out of her with WWE using her in tags or quick squashes mainly, and I enjoyed what I saw. As for it being in the main event, well the crowd were into it and loved both women and it was the only title match on the show so I think it made all the sense in the world to go on last. I'd go about 3.25 on it which is around the grappl average, by no means a bad match.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

Bryan/Kenny was everything it needed to be. A stunning thirty minute rollercoaster ride that the whole stadium would have happily had more of, but the time limit draw was the right move and the crowd knew it because they didn't even dwell on it too much. Action packed and incredible match, and the opening spot was the right choice because it didn't telegraph the time limit ending too obviously and it let AEW put one of the world titles in the main event spot, illustrating that title matches should be given high positions on the card. Incredible match, can't wait for another, Bryan is the best in the world.

I'm on the fence on optimistic Punk. I agree with Zero that he comes off as earnest and genuine as ever and that's a good thing for a guy who's taken some heat as an unlikable personality outside the ring. That said I do think there is a moment coming where it stops being satisfying for Punk to come to the ring and do ten minutes on how much he loves his life, and hope we see a wrinkle in the character soon. Anyone else would have already flopped with these promos but Punk's an A+ talker and remains over and convincing in the role.

MJF/Pillman was good not great but it felt like MJF has done most of the work both in this match and in this feud. Pillman's name has a lot of weight but if this little mini-feud was sort of a trial run for him as an AEW constant I don't think he passed the test. Needs to go back to tag-teaming in the lowcard while he polishes up his ringwork and promo skills a bit more, because he's fairly average in everywhere but name right now. Right guy won, outcome never in doubt.

Cody/Black wasn't particularly good and I don't like that Black won with a roll-up although the black mist was a nice touch. Time to get Malakai free of the Nightmare Family and into something with more meat on the bones. Cody's tweener stuff is well documented at this point and honestly I don't know how anyone still cheers for him with how schmaltzy his stuff comes off. Malakai is a much cooler guy to root for.

FTR/Sting & Darby was a lot of fun and it's amazing to me how much giddy-up Sting still has. I don't love the outcome, I was hoping for FTR pinning Sting personally, but the idea that they did it to themselves will keep their credibility high and it's not like losing to Sting of all people is really gonna damage their push. They might have to work their way back into the tag title picture but I think we're still getting Lucha Bros and FTR at some point and that will be great.

Ruby/Britt was what it needed to be, and I re-emphasize that I like it in the main event spot (especially because to the live crowd it's really just the halfway mark). They had a convincing grudge match and Ruby looked very competent in her first big single's match, with Britt getting the super-heel win that she does so well. Ruby comes off looking good but Britt's still the champ, did the job.

On the whole, good but not great show, certainly not living up to the billing of All Out but there's a reason this is still a TV card and not a PPV card. Looking forward to a few of the Rampage matches as well. Show pulled a very good 1.29 million but was narrowly behind Raw in the demo this week so the competition between those two shows remains a bit spicy and unpredictable at this stage. Can't imagine anyone watching this show and not wanting to come back for more though, that crowd was HOT and a hot crowd makes for a fun product.

    Re: AEW Grand Slam - 9/22 & 9/24 2021

I’ll echo the sentiments from others in regards to Danielson and Onega, boy, what a match! That was everything I could have asked for out of those two and more! Give me more of those two, please. Danielson’s last match in WWE was with one of their main champions and his first AEW match is a match with their main champion, pretty neat if you ask me.

Rest of the show was solid, I really dug the main event and MJF v Pillman Jr, Black and Cody was fine for what it was I’m just pleased that Black won.

Punk promo was great too. I’m hyped for his match with Hobbs on Friday.

But seriously show was great. I definitely felt a little burnt out by the end of dynamite but it picked back up with rampage. By the of dynamite though there was alrdy an hour of elevation plus huge energy from the opener and punk promo. Crowd kinda died down during mjfs match but it wasnt his fault and there were tons of signs hating on mjf (including from his own parents )

Crowd was pretty hot for black right away and there was a big malakai chant to open the match that i was rly surprised didnt come through on tv. He was definitely getting cheered big himself and not just cause of Cody heat.

Tag team match was solid. Sting looked pretty damn impressive for his age. Was hoping ftr got the win over sting but i dont think this loss rly hurts them. That coffin drop to the outside looked brutal in person. Rly looked like beards face smashed the apron hard to the point i thought he mightve actually gotten hurt.

Honestly the main event was a blur. I was rdy to get up and strech my legs. I was cramped in my seat with a giant man sitting next to me so i had very little room. And the guy next to me wasnt a wrestling fan so that was pretty draining. At this point I just needed a break so not much to say here. Thankfully they were gone for rampage though.

Omega and danielson was great though and I was shocked it came first to begin with but I feel like dynamite and rampage were somewhat booked as one show together and since it was on dynamite they had it open. (Along with the time limit) i dont have to explain how hot the crowd was for this match and theres not much to be said that hasnt alrdy. Crowd knew it was gonna be a draw and was perfectly fine with that but just had to give the quick boo.

Looking forward to seeing rampage on tv. Crowd definitely picked back up for it and while it didnt have omega danielson it felt like a more complete show that didnt drag at times like dynamite seemed to.

Omega/Bryan was a great opener and what I really liked about it is for as much as they did I still feel like there’s plenty more in the tank from those two. Looking forward to more matches from them. I originally questioned its placement on the card but to make sure they hit the time limit with no snags I think it was the right call. Bryan/Nick Jackson on a subsequent Dynamite please Mr K.

I’ll be kind and say the rest of the show was solid. MJF/BPJ was alright. Pillman needs a lot of work on his act, be it sorting out his weak offence or trying to become a more likeable babyface. I find him hard to root for. I think he needs to get a bit more fire in his belly. Back to tagging with Griffo.

Cody/Black and Baker/Ruby I didn’t really enjoy, Sting/Darby/FTR was fun. Sting looks great for his age.

On to Rampage where the big question is: can CM Punk lift up Hobbs for the GTS!?
