I think when you statistically have a 90% chance of winning the game if you win the coin toss, that's pretty rough to leave so much up to random chance.
Playoff teams having a 90% win rate in OT if they win the coin toss -- and 70% of those wins coming from opening drive TDs.

    Everything will surely be alright.

The best solution to overtime I've heard is football style penalty kicks, but instead of kicking make it 2 pt conversions. Best of 5, if there's a tie after 5, you go to sudden death until you have a winner.

That way it's not as lame as field goals, there's less chance of exhaustion (as opposed to an extra 10-15 min period), and it would be really exciting.

I'm not sure why they wouldn't just let both teams have a chance to score. It really seems like the most obvious solution. The NCAA model is great for that, as it gives both teams a chance and makes for a very exciting OT period.

I'm sure the Ravens will be proposing the spot and choose system at the meetings again this year. I do like the strategy behind it, but I think a lot of people may find it difficult to accept.

One fun idea I read was to decide the OT coin flip before the end of regulation (a separate flip at halftime or have the game start count for both). That way the team kicking and on D to start can make their end-of-game calls (go for tie or win) based on this info.

the way it is currently, they should just streamline it and whichever team wins the coin flip just wins the game. Statistically that's what is likely to happen anyway. Just simplify a great existing system.

I actually said the same thing after the game on Sunday. Why bother with taking a chance on players getting hurt when they can just finish the game with a coin flip.

I'm also up for rock, paper, scissors.

Oh, Rock Paper Scissors would be dramatic and involve some degree of skill. I could support that.

They could also go for a two-man three-legged sack race. One offensive player and one defensive player, of course. We could also have the coaches compete against each other in sumo suits at midfield.

Sounds like the good old days at the Barracuda downtown. 98 cent beers before 10PM and free sumo suits for all.

The NFL needs to adopt a variation of the NCAA OT rules. Maybe instead of giving the team on offense the ball so close to the end zone you move it back to the 50. I had no rooting interest in Sunday night's game, but it highlighted a change that I've been saying needs to be made for quite a while now.

Think that's the end of them as a competitive team for a while. Cap hell, no QB, their superstar wide receiver would rather be a diva.

If Payton ever wants a different job he'll walk into just about any job, even despite compensation.

According to rumors, Amazon is willing to pay him more than the Saints to cover their games. If so, he'd be nuts to turn it down. You go into town the day before a game, talk to some players and coaches, call the game, then go home.

I think there's a good chance he returns at some point. Its being described as a "break" rather than retiring. Maybe he takes a TV job and never looks back, but could take a year or two off and come back. The saints do have his contract rights for the next 3 years, so if he wanted to coach somewhere else it would have to be via trade in that time frame.

Yeah I think he just takes a year or two off, burns off his contract with the Saints, then walks into a job in any front office he wants.

Unless he turns out to be an absolute revelation in broadcasting, he could easily coach for another 10-15 years.

    Busy news morning today.

    Big Ben has officially retired.

The Broncos have chosen Packers OC Nathaniel Hackett as their new Head Coach.

The Bears have hired Colts DC Matt Eberflus as their Head Coach.

Big Ben news was expected but still sad.

Are the Broncos trying to entice Aaron and Davante by doing this?

    And the Bears, I mean...Lol.

I would assume that the Broncos move is to try to entice Aaron, and possibly Adams.

As far as the Bears, there are also rumors that Eberflus will name the Eagles' passing game coordinator as the OC. Because that Eagles passing game was really something to behold....

Looks like there's still chaos going on in Jacksonville. Should see a new coach and GM announced sooner than later, though.
