IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships Unified

Tokyo Sports has today revealed that the messy year of NJPW having a double champion is over because they're unifying the two belts to create the IWGP World Championship with Kota Ibushi being recognised as the first ever champion and he will receive a new belt. Despite El Desperado challenging for one of the titles, and Ibushi accepting the challenge, the Anniversary show on Thursday will be a NON-TITLE match.

I have mixed feelings on this. On one hand, they had to sort out the mess that the double titles created. The nonsense like we had on this tour of Naito challenging Ibushi, but only for the IC title, needed to stop in favour of something more logical. But why now?....why one day after Naito Vs Ibushi in the WK rematch? That could of been the hook of this weekend's show that they're unifying the belts and the winner would be the first ever world champion. In fact, why wasn't this the hook for WrestleKingdom instead of the bullshit we got.

And then there's the concerns I have with the lineage of the IWGP Heavyweight Championship now being ended if they're recognising Ibushi as the first ever world champion and that classic belt is going away.

Honestly, they should of just retired the IC title a year ago and things would of been a lot more logical in the company.

It's an interesting route. A whole new lineage for the title has been created and while that's historically significant, it ends the IWGP Heavyweight history. I agree that they probably should've just retired the Intercontinental Title in the first place but I'm not totally against this either.

The IC Title has been turned into a joke for literally the last 5 years so I'm happy it's gone and the NEVER Title can be more important, but getting rid of the title lineage was completely nonsensical. What a stupid move. But the benefits they're thinking are pretty obvious:

    * Get a new belt design (could have been done anyway)
    * Give Okada, the golden child, a new title that he's never run so they can try and spin it to see him as world champion more interesting than it actually would be
    * Add extra hype to this year's NJC where the winner will be the first challenge for the "new" title.

This was my only thought when I heard of it. Okada gets a new title to big up his legacy that hes never held before.

Re: IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships Unified

The hook for Castle Attack was that Ibushi was going to unify the belts if he won but Naito would stop it if he won. Ibushi's motive being that he wished to define his own legacy whilst Naito's failure to keep the double belts meant that he felt responsible for stopping Ibushi. Naito had never wanted to unify the belts as one and I think that's the point.

I do think the story of Naito going for the IC belt was a little weak and meh but challenging for both belts would also seem weird given Ibushi beat him. Ibushi himself said he wasn't even sure what it was Naito was really fighting for. I guess they just really really needed this match to headline. Makes sense if they initially planned it to be the last double title match. Not sure how much of Ibushi changing their mind on that and switching it to the Despy match is shoot/work. It did mean it was double champ vs double champ though so idk.

It's a given Okada will win the belt eventually but I highly doubt this move was pulled with just him in mind. If so, it's incredibly short-sighted given they have other glaring errors that need fixed for the future. They aren't making this new belt just to buff Okada up but of course itll get hyped when he does win it.

I think it does add extra spice to NJC as well but really I think there's no need for two top titles and I feel like the landscape might be a little better with just this belt and the NEVER belt. I wonder if this means more defences too. If they're planning to run more major shows, they probably want as many of IWGP World title matches as they can get without burning out potential matchups.

I think it looks fine. It'll just take some time getting used to. I'd prefer to have the old design and title back though.

    That's how I felt.

When was the last time there was a new belt design somewhere with fans universally praising it?

It's clear they were trying to tribute the old belt which hasn't been around in like 20 years with the 3 points up top but where they screwed up was all the design craziness in the plate itself with the wings and all that. If it had all been gold I think it could have been pretty slick, and I dig the tribute to the past but yeah. The end result was just horrible.

I don't hate the belt at all. Biggest complaint is somehow it doesn't have the feel of a world title. No way they were gonna top the previous IWGP Heavyweight Title for me anyways, but I don't think this one sucks or anything.
