    NHL: The Great One Cometh

1979-80 was Wayne Gretzky's first season in the NHL and this will start there. History may change or it may stay the same, but one thing is for sure...The Great One Cometh and things will never be the same in the NHL.

    1979-80 NHL Season Preview

As the season is about to get underway, let's take a look at what we can expect going into the newest season of the NHL.

The current favorites to win the Stanley Cup are the New York Islanders who are currently led by defenceman Denis Potvin. Their General Manager has managed to build a squad that will most certainly be the team to beat this year. However, they can expect a big challenge from the Philadelphia Flyers and the Buffalo Sabres, led by Gilbert Perreault.

The biggest dark horse is looking to be the Boston Bruins and if Brad Park has a good enough season, it is possible that they may become a contender.

It is more than likely that the scoring race will see the Edmonton Oilers' Wayne Gretzky challenged by Bryan Trottier of New York and Montreal's Guy Lafleur. It will most certainly be a high scoring season.

The top defenceman in the league is generally considered to be Denis Potvin of New York but Boston's Brad Park and Montreal's Larry Robinson are also in the running.

Among the goaltenders, Dan Bouchard of the Atlanta Flames stands out as the best in the league while Vancouver Canucks netminder Glen Hanlin and Mike Liut of St. Louis are known to be capable in their own right.

This season is shaping up to be a great one and it will be interesting to see how it turns out. Stay tuned!
