    AEW 2021 Match YES/NO Thread

Talk about the best AEW matches through the year here.

Basically - if you feel a match this year is especially good, nominate it here, and then others vote YES or NO if they think it is especially good too or not. A match does not have to be a MOTYC to be nominated, but rather one you think is good enough to go out of your way for. To nominate a match you must give a reason or explanation. You don't need to go into detail to vote YES or NO, but are encouraged to do so.

This opening post will keep track of all matches nominated and their votes. Matches with a +3 value will be bolded to highlight them.

    NOMINATIONS

Kenny Omega vs Rey Fenix, New Year's Smash - Night 1 - 6 YES, 0 NO
Darby Allin vs Brian Cage, New Year's Smash - Night 2 - 6 YES, 1 NO
Dax Harwood vs Jungle Boy, Dynamite 27/1 - 1 YES, 2 NO

    Kenny Omega/KENTA vs Jon Moxley/Lance Archer, Dynamite 10/2 - 3 YES, 1 NO

Britt Baker vs Thunder Rosa, Dynamite 17/3 - 4 YES, 0 NO

Darby Allin vs Miro, Dynamite 12/5 - 5 YES, 0 NO

Kenny Omega vs Christian Cage, Rampage 13/8 - 1 YES, 0 NO

Miro vs Eddie Kingston, All Out - 5 YES, 0 NO
The Young Bucks vs The Lucha Brothers, All Out - 4 YES, 0 NO
CM Punk vs Darby Allin, All Out - 2 YES, 2 NO
Kenny Omega vs Christian Cage, All Out - 3 YES, 1 NO
Kenny Omega vs Bryan Danielson, Grand Slam 22/9 - 4 YES, 0 NO

Guess it's worth nominating Kenny Omega vs Rey Fenix just so we don't have stuff getting potentially left off the list or forgotten again, especially as the year progresses

Give me a few lines on why you're nominating it

    I'll put it over.

Could have easily been a complete spotfest but added enough small touches in to avoid it. I'd certainly like to remember it existed 11 months from now.

    Plus, that murderous german suplex.

Omega/Fenix - YES from me. Really fun main event. These two work well together and there were some fine moments in this one, namely Fenix’s ferocious cannonball tope where he nearly ended up in the crowd, and that fantastic backflip german suplex.

Nominate Darby Allin vs. Brian Cage

Two guys who's styles mesh perfectly, the roided spot monkey vs. the skinny bump machine. Fantastic table spot, the Sting stuff didn't disrupt, and now I've read about the finish, a great bit of story telling to boot. Personally prefer Omega/Fenix but this ran it close.

Re: AEW 2021 Match YES/NO Thread

You have to love the small guy vs the big guy matches and Darby's bumps are pretty amazing sometimes. A solid match and puts The TNT Championship that much over. Really nothing bad to say. I loved that table bump and the little bit there with Sting finally doing something to get some action. Solid match and told a good story. So I will give it a Yes.

Re: AEW 2021 Match YES/NO Thread

Also a yes from me. Although I felt the Sting interference was anti-climatic for me. I’m sure I would’ve been way more hyped for it if Sting just disappeared after his debut and this was his return, with only teases of him inbetween.

And a Yes for Omega/Fenix too. Strong, fast-paced and spotty without reaching my threshold for ridiculousness. Dunno WTF was up with Fenix getting his shoulder up though.

YES for Darby/Cage. Not only did they work the match perfectly, with the great story-telling behind the finish, they made it believable that Darby would take an L on his first title defence.

YES to both Omega/Fenix and Allin/Cage. Didn't love either but both were good enough to get a thumbs up.

Re: AEW 2021 Match YES/NO Thread

For the people have seen both, how do you think the AEW Omega/Fenix compares to the AAA Omega/Fenix? The crowd was obviously very different, but the matches felt pretty similar to me, I'll throw a yes to Omega/Fenix either wayy.

Jungle Boy vs Dax Harwood - AEW Dynamite 1/27/2021

Had a decent rivalry going into it. Crowd was hot for it from start to finish. Even the post-match added onto the match and was well done. I don't think this will win AEW MOTY or anything but definitely something that'll be worth going back and watching.

Re: AEW 2021 Match YES/NO Thread

    Late to the show:

YES - Fenix/Omega - Wild, mindless Fenix match, not much on psychology but I didn't really expect or want any here. I gotta give props to AEW for showcasing a guy like Fenix as an occasional singles main eventer because if he was signed to NXT he'd be the 4th man in the Lucha House Party.

NO - Cage/Darby - thought this was fine but I'm over this feud so my engagement wasn't there and the finish was a bit anticlimactic.

NO - Dax/Jungle Boy - Come on now, it was a nice little match, but I wouldn't rate it as high as others have.

NOMINATE - Omega and KENTA Vs Moxley and Archer 10/2/21 - God I loved this, so much fun while still keeping the aggression and the commitment to the ongoing builds for two title matches in the future. It just feels like ages since we've seen a tornado style tag match (I don't count the Parking Lot Brawl) so this one really stood out. It's the best Archer AEW match, and I feel like the most I've enjoyed KENTA since his 2019 G1. I didn't even mind the interference spot as A) Jake Roberts got a clothesline in on Anderson during the chaos and B) it took 3 men to lift up Archer for the one winged angel which I thought was a cool finish. 4 Stars flat.

Re: AEW 2021 Match YES/NO Thread

I'll give a YES to Omega and KENTA Vs Moxley and Archer as well. It may not end up as top 5 for the year but it at least needs to be revisited in December during the contemplation. Really fun match like Ed said, with the finish slightly taking away from it for me in the end but definitely something I want to be looking back at in December when making my list.

YES to KENTA/Omega v Moxley/Archer. Wild and chaotic, lots of fun.

I’ll go YES for Jungle Boy/Harwood and Darby/Cage. Both enjoyable matches, although they’re right at the lower end of the scale of consideration for me, but I’m feeling generous.

NO to the tag. I enjoyed most of it, even if parts were closer to WWE hardcore title stuff than a hate-filled brawl, but the finish was a real turd sandwich

EDIT - oh and NO to Jungle Boy vs Harwood for the same reason as Ed. Doubt it'll be a top 20 AEW match by the end of the year

Re: AEW 2021 Match YES/NO Thread

    Nominate

Britt Baker vs Thunder Rosa, Dynamite 17/3

Really satisfying, bloody grudge match. I know this is a promotion that just ran an explosion deathmatch, but I was still shocked at some of the gnarly bumps these women took. Too often in these matches a chickenshit heel will still play the coward and cheap-shot their way through, I really appreciated that Britt was aggressive from the start and always moving forward. I thought this was a potential breakout performance for her as her personality really shined through. The execution on some of the early stuff wasn't always there, but I thought they more than made up for with their intensity and carnage. Obviously seeing 2 women bleed like this was memorable, but I think they earned their stripes big-time through the actual work. The powerbomb on the tacks maybe should have been the finish, but it's still a thumbs up.
