I feel that Hogan is really underrated as a wrestler at times. He has really good matches against Slaughter, Orndorff, Andre, Backlund (in 1980), Bockwinkle, Bossman and Flair but I can't go against Backlund. His title run is full of great matches against tons of different oppnents that range from slugs to world class wrestlers. Adonis, Slaughter, Patera (a classic), Valentine, Muraco all very good to all time great matches. He has the incredible submission match against Bret Hart at Survivor Series 94. Backlund is the guy.

Not to mention the Race match that's posted up there. However, he's simply run up against a much better in-ring worker, and while he'll always be the guy synonymous with pro wrestling in general, it's not enough to beat Backlund here.

I love me a coked up, full throttle Hogan brawl, it's a shame there wasn't more of that. Hard to go against Bob here though.

Yeah this is Backlund for me. I've not seen a whole bunch if I'm honest but enough to bring an opinion. I've seen enough of Hogan to know that as a worker his negatives outweigh his positives (his WCW run was filled with some of the worst main events in NA history from a major company).

Re: WCBNAINWOATT Round 1: Bob Backlund vs Hulk Hogan

Easily gonna be Robert Backlund here. For me, even the matches that people point to trying to prove Hogan can work are always pretty unimpressive. Hogan definitely has a great grasp on the fundamentals of working a match and a crowd, but his form on a lot of stuff is just shit, he was clunky even in his prime, and his ego lead to a lot of really badly worked stuff. I'm not saying he's a bad worker at all, he just isn't among the best by any stretch imo. Backlund, I haven't seen nearly as much as Hogan, obviously, because who has? But, he seemed to be ahead of the game as far as working a good tempo while still remaining very technically sound. His work in the late 70s and 80s still holds up very well. He even makes me enjoy Ken Patera.

Dejavu, I’m certain we’ve had this pairing before in one of these tournaments.

I'd be interested in hearing from the 4 Hogan voters as to their reasoning for picking him. I just hope it's not a simple case of "I've never seen Backlund wrestle", which always worries me in these things.

Even in his latter days Backlund could still put on a better in ring performance than a prime Hogan....wait is that too harsh

I've never been overly impressed with Backlund during his peak years. Typically, it's his opponents that made the matches interesting for me and not Backlund. Creatively, the only time he's drawn me in was when he snapped in mid 1994 and they quickly killed that off in November. Hogan may have a lot of flaws, but he was a way better promo, had more personality, and had better top matches. Some of this may just be biasness from being a little Hulkamaniac, but I know I'd rather watch a prime Hogan match than a prime Backlund match.

Re: WCBNAINWOATT Round 1: Bob Backlund vs Hulk Hogan

LOVE Backlund as a worker. Him in the 80s, no matter who it was with, was great stuff and it was far from an in-ring territory. His match against Ken Patera matches up against many great matches from the 80s.

Hogan I do agree on him being kind of underrated when he wanted to show what he could do but he's no Backlund, who is among the best WWE products ever.

Fuck, even when they randomly bring Backlund out to cut insane promos he's almost always the highlight of the show. Bob will always be my president.
