I could not get into Mank and I badly wanted to, I was actually super excited to watch it and I still have yet to finish it.

Re: The Totally Random Movie Discussion Thread

Finished up my Oscar watching ahead of tonight.

Loved Sound of Metal, and would be very happy to see both Ahmed and Raci win their categories. Glad I never saw it in the cinema though, the sound was way too close to home for this tinnitus sufferer.

Checked out Ma Rainey for the lead acting noms. Pulling for Ahmed still, but can see why Boseman is so heavily favoured. Viola Davis is good too, but pulling for Carey Mulligan for beat actress.

Finally, watched Shaun The Sheep: Farmageddon Means I've seen 4/5 of the animation noms and it's the usual Aardman charming fun. That said, unless Wolfwalkers is a hidden gem, this should be a slam dunk for Soul.

I missed a lot of the movies this year but I'm pulling so hard for Carey Mulligan that I might strain something.

Well... looks like I have to check out Nomadland after all. I mean... Frances McDormand ftw until the end of all times.

I ended up jamming Nomadland into my veins two hours before the ceremony and came away a little lukewarm on it. It's a beautiful and thoughtful movie, but contemplative, low-stakes character studies don't typically do much for me.

Promising Young Woman has my top spot from an admittedly shallow list of 2020 films I saw.

Completely agree with this take. It's well made, but nothing really happens for two hours. Best actress and director wins I can agree with, but Best Picture? Not my choice personally. My order would be:

    1. Promising Young Woman
    2. Sound Of Metal
    3. Trial Of The Chicago 5
    4. Nomadland
    5. Mank

If English language isn’t a requirement for Best Picture, since Parasite won last year, I definitely think Another Round should’ve been nominated. I know it did get Best International, but I’d rate it above some of the Best Picture nominees. Great performance from Mads and works as both a celebration and non-judgmental cautionary tale of drinking culture and alcoholism.

I'd pretty much agree with this.
Promising young woman was easily my favorite
Rest of my list would be
    2. Sound of metal
    3. Minari
    4. The Father
    5. Trial of the Chicago 7
    6. Nomadland
    7. Mank
Haven't gotten around to Judas and the black Messiah yet.
Also am I the only one who doesn't think Chadwick Bosman didn't get snubbed? He was good for sure, but Anthony Hopkins deserved the best actor win, it was the better performance.

Haven’t seen either performance, but it’s Anthony Hopkins and Chadwick Boseman. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Hopkins simply was just the better performer in his film, he’s one of our best living actors. Although there’s a compilation of him overacting and scenery-chewing on YouTube I highly recommend for a good laugh.

I think the push back was less about who deserved it more. It was more about how the ceremony seemed set up to close on Boseman winning in a feel good moment, and instead went to the actor who couldn't even give an acceptance speech because he's 80+ and it was 5am in the UK at the time. Left a bad taste, which wasn't fair on Hopkins either.

He was the best thing about Transformers: The Last Knight for this alone

To be fair, Boseman wouldn’t have been able to give an acceptance speech either.

Calling it a “snub” is ridiculous, as his family and Michael B. Jordan have pointed out. I’m just glad they did, or we’d get some more sensationalist media headlines like “Michael B. Jordan SLAMS the Academy - says Bozeman was SNUBBED at the Oscars and we all know why”.

What are the mask rules for cinemas like in the rest of the world where they've reopened?

Cinemas are reopening here next week, and realising you still have a wear a mask the whole time despite seating being distanced has really dampened my excitement. I get why these rules are there, but 2+ hours indoors wearing a mask? Not for me.

Try being a teacher where you have to wear a mask indoors for 5-6 hours a day. They've announced that masks aren't compulsorry from next week n schools/colleges etc, but my place of work is going to continue asking for us to all wear them. Correct choice for me.

Cinemas aren't the most ventilated places and while social distancing will probably be in force with limited, spaced out seating I think it makes sense for masks to still be enforced. 2-3 hours in a cinema wearing a mask is fine by me. I'll put up with it for the long term greater good.

I guess this is were our experiences differ. I work in an office where we only need to wear masks when moving around the building, our desks are kept far enough apart so that we can work without wearing them. Similar to a cinema set-up in my mind.

Re: The Totally Random Movie Discussion Thread

When they were open in Toronto last summer, the rule was “masks on unless eating or drinking”, which obviously gave them an out for enforcement. The theatre staff is not going to be walking up and down the aisles of a darkened room looking for outlaws.

I saw Tenet in a smaller theatre and nobody kept their masks on after the movie started, though we were all very well distanced. I imagine this was the same at every theatre and there were no recorded outbreaks here. Tbh, I initially meant to put mine back on after I finished my popcorn, but I also had a bottle of wine that ended up lasting me the whole movie, so technically I was always drinking.

Most customer service employees would probably prefer not to be the ones who have to tell customers to put on their mask. I'd probably keep the mask on out of courtesy and because its not going to kill me to wear it, I've gone through worse discomforts. That said, we're still on lockdown here in good ole' Ontario so no point speculating about what I would or wouldnt do in a theater

This was my thought. Most cinema staff here are students, are they really gonna be up to confronting people daily about masks whilst on minimum wage?
