Since HBK is taking a part time schedule any day soon, I'm betting Vince has at least thought to himself "wouldn't it be great to send him off by crucifying him on a PPV" to send out the message that I beat God. I know how da man's mind works!!

I'm seriously thinking he has.
It surely would never happen though since there is no way HBK could ever peddle the "I'm a born again Christian" lifestyle choice if he was then happy to go with this angle and put himself into the "Jesus" spot.
He would be condemned surely for being a hypocrite. Then again, he does like controversy!!
On a side note, my bro and I laughed our asses off when HBK left his match to run up the ramp at Mania and grabbed his wife on the way. Most guys would be shouting to their loved ones "I love you", not ol' ego boy, he was shouting "you love me, you love me".....priceless.

Maybe Bret will come back and they'll crucify him instead.
But seriously, I'm pissed that this story is continuing. I know its just Backlash and nobody really cares about that anyway but now I'm forced to watch at least a month of this crap on RAW. Mania was a perfect way to end it.
HBK wins the match but Vince kinda wins also because he got HBK to go back to that "OOOLLLLLLLLDDD!!! Shawn Michaels!!!" You know?
Now they are just dragging it on like people want more of it and they really don't. He needs to get it through his head. This isn't McMahon/Austin 2006!!

You're right, I'm guessing it's only carrying on since an angle has to be created to explain Shawn's new schedule. At least adding Shane into the match itself gives us the guarantee that the action will be pretty good in the PPV match compared to the Mania one (as long as they don't 'cuff Shane O'Mac again).
Booking Rule 101 suggests that this is an ideal opportunity for somebody to gain the heat for pushing HBK to the kerb and setting up (automatically) the feud for when he returns. It certainly mustn't be Vince that does it since (a) nobody wants to see HBK come back gunning to continue this feud and (b) for christ's sake Vince don't let your bonkers ego say it has to be you that gets rid of him!!
A good bet would have been Masters since he had a small previous history with Shawn and also was involved in (storyline wise) the ridding of Jannetty last month, but they may not want to keep him from the Carlito angle (depending on how long they see that running).
Of course in an ideal world it would be Benjamin since that would guarantee stellar matches on HBK's comeback and maybe that would coincide with (future planning) Shelton dropping the IC belt and being ready to be pushed to main event level
