No Way Out Discussion Thread

No Way Out 2008 Card

WWE Championship Match: Randy Orton (C) vs John Cena

Who is the real WWE Champion?

If you ask John Cena, he would tell you that he is the true “Champ” – after all, he never lost his title in the middle of the ring. An attack by current WWE kingpin Randy Orton in late September left him with a torn pectoral muscle that forced him to relinquish the WWE Championship and sidelined him for four months.

Orton, of course, sees things differently. He says he took Cena out of the game, then claimed the WWE Championship (which Orton believes is his birthright) and has cemented his hold as the best in the industry by defeating greats such as Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Jeff Hardy in recent months. However, Orton hasn’t defeated one person in the ring – Cena.

On Feb. 17 at No Way Out, Cena and Orton will battle and our fans will find out who is the true WWE Champion. The stakes couldn’t be greater: One Superstar will leave with the gold and coveted spot in the main event at WrestleMania XXIV in Orlando, Fla. The other will leave empty-handed and out of the most prized opportunity in sports-entertainment.

It's Personal: Two Superstars With Something to Prove
For Cena, this matchup is personal on so many levels. At the time of his injury last September, he was in a heated war with Orton that revolved around not just the WWE Championship, but the Legend Killer’s repeated attacks on his father. Because of Orton, Cena lost not only his championship but almost his career.

Doctors predicted that Cena’s injury would keep him out for up to a year, and that he would sit at home and watch Orton walk around with his title. He couldn’t stand seeing Orton with the WWE Championship he cherished. That’s why he trained feverishly and came back just four months after his injury, won the Royal Rumble Match and earned an opportunity at the WWE Championship. That’s why he couldn’t wait until WrestleMania to get his crack at Orton. Cena wanted to take back the championship he believed was rightfully his as soon as he could – at No Way Out.

Orton, meanwhile, wants to silence his doubters once and for all. He wants to eliminate Cena and prove that he is truly a “one-man dynasty.” Orton believes that Cena is not fully-healed from his injury and wants to take advantage of a "hot-headed" Cena. The Legend Killer loves the WWE Championship more than life itself; he believes it is his destiny. Orton believes defeating Cena in the middle of the ring at No Way Out would cement his legacy and clear his path to WrestleMania.

Only one man can emerge from No Way Out as WWE Champion and go to the main event at WrestleMania XXIV. Who will emerge victorious when John Cena and Randy Orton gamble for it all in Las Vegas?

-------------------------------

World Heavyweight Championship Match: Edge (C) vs Rey Mysterio

Just when it looked like Rey Mysterio was going to de-throne World Heavyweight Champion Edge at Royal Rumble, a meddling SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero interfered, allowing Edge to retain his title.

At No Way Out, the two are set to do battle for the coveted gold once again in a rematch – one set by Theodore Long, who seems to have regained GM control for the ailing Guerrero, who fell victim to a well-placed Mysterio 619 at Royal Rumble.

With his title on the line for the second time in less than a month, to what measures are the Ultimate Opportunist and the “Guerrero family” willing to go to in order to protect the gold? If unimpeded by the likes of new ECW Champion Chavo Guerrero, the GM herself and tagalongs Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder, can Mysterio finally defeat the Rated-R Superstar and become World Champion?

After already losing to Edge at Royal Rumble – combined with constantly having to be concerned with what “the family” has up its sleeve – the deck appears to be heavily stacked against Mysterio in Vegas.

But, the Master of the 619 is used to dealing with adversity. At WrestleMania 22, he showed the world that dreams really do come true when he won a Triple Threat Match for the World Championship.

At No Way Out, can Rey relive the dream? Or, will the Rated-R Superstar and his entourage continue to reign?

-------------------------------

SmackDown! and ECW Elimination Chamber Match: Undertaker vs Batista vs The Great Khali vs MVP vs Big Daddy V vs Finlay

In an unprecedented move, SmackDown’s Assistant General Manager Theodore Long announced that at No Way Out, a second Elimination Chamber Match would take place with the winner receiving an opportunity at the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XXIV.

Six competitors from SmackDown and ECW will enter the sadistic structure, where only one Superstar will earn the title match at the “Granddaddy of them All” in Orlando, Fla. SmackDown’s Undertaker, Batista, Finlay, The Great Khali, United States Champion MVP and ECW’s Big Daddy V will all vie to challenge the winner of Edge and Rey Mysterio’s pay-per-view encounter. The stakes at No Way Out in Las Vegas have never been higher for the Superstars involved.

Undertaker’s quest to reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship will go through No Way Out, and given The Phenom’s problems with another Chamber competitor, Big Daddy V, the obstacles for The Deadman have greatly increased. The Dominating Force in WWE will be the sole representative from ECW, and he will undoubtedly have a target on his back.

Former champion Batista told our fans that he planned on winning the Elimination Chamber and going on to WrestleMania to once again become World Champion. The Animal is on a mission, but he will have to contend with five hungry Superstars for the golden opportunity.

United States Champion MVP will be at No Way Out to try and take another step closer to fulfilling what he believes to be his destiny – capturing the World Heavyweight Championship. Will the Ballin’ Superstar find a way to win or will another Superstar step up?

Finlay will bring his brawling style to No Way Out, and maybe the Irishman will use that unorthodox approach to go all the way to WrestleMania XXIV, but he will also be staring across the ring at his rival, The Great Khali.

-------------------------------

RAW Elimination Chamber Match: Triple H vs Shawn Michaels vs Chris Jericho vs JBL vs Jeff Hardy vs Umaga

Along with Hell in a Cell, the Elimination Chamber is one of the most feared sights in WWE. Composed of 10 tons of steel, with two miles of chain, and 36 feet in diameter, it is the most massive, unforgiving structure in WWE history. It has rarely been used, but at No Way Out it will make its return in perhaps its most high-stakes environment – the winner of the Elimination Chamber will earn an opportunity at the WWE Champion on the grandest stage of them all, WrestleMania XXIV.

The combatants in the Elimination Chamber on Feb. 17 will include: Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, JBL, Intercontinental Champion Jeff Hardy and Umaga. Four of these Superstars – The Game, HBK, Jericho and JBL – are former World Champions and would love to hold the gold again. Hardy and Umaga have never held a singles World Championship and hunger to be atop the WWE mountain for the first time. Ultimately, the winner of the Elimination Chamber will be the one who wants the WWE Championship the most and can survive in the menacing, barbaric structure.

Survival of the Fittest
Respect is thrown out of the window in the Chamber; there are no alliances. Triple H, Michaels, Jericho, JBL, Hardy and Umaga will not only be battling each other, but the Chamber itself. There is no escape from the Elimination Chamber, and everything in it – from glass to unforgiving steel – is a potential weapon.

Here are the rules:

Two Superstars will start the match while the remaining four are enclosed in glass pods.
At designated times, a pod will open at random, enabling a Superstar to enter the match. This will continue until all the competitors have been released.
A man is eliminated via pinfall or submission only.
The last man standing is the winner.
Triple H, Michaels, Jericho, Hardy, Umaga and JBL have different philosophies, but all have one thing in common – incredible desire. Though they are DX teammates, let’s not forget that The Game and The Showstopper have spilled each other’s blood over a World Championship in the past. They may be willing to do it again.

Jericho and JBL came out of their respective retirements to be the top dog in WWE again. Y2J was the first-ever Undisputed Champion; JBL was SmackDown’s longest-reigning WWE Champion. Both of these history makers want the opportunity to make history again – on sports-entertainment’s greatest stage, WrestleMania. These two have a heated rivalry and will no doubt be willing to maim and draw each other's blood in the Chamber.

Who wants the opportunity the most? Who will challenge for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania?

-------------------------------

Career Threatening Match: Ric Flair vs Mr. Kennedy

One night after stylin’ and profilin’ his way to victory over United States Champion Montel Vontavious Porter at Royal Rumble, Ric Flair accepted a challenge from Mr. Kennedy – and his sixth consecutive Career Threatening Match – at No Way Out.

As per WWE Chairman Vince McMahon’ s mandate last November, the legendary “Nature Boy” must retire following the next match he loses. Since then, however, Flair has defeated an array of Superstars, including WWE Champion Randy Orton, Umaga, Triple H, Raw GM William Regal, and most recently the loudmouthed MVP. Although Flair took care of business against the Franchise Playa, can he do the same against another competitor with a similar penchant for talking a big game?

Surely, Flair knows Mr. Kennedy is no slouch. The laundry list of former World Champions and future Hall of Famers he has defeated reads like a Who’s Who in WWE. Kane, Undertaker, Rey Mysterio, Batista and most recently Shawn Michaels, among others, have all tasted defeat at the hands of Raw’s outspoken Superstar. And now he is setting out to do what MVP couldn’t accomplish at Royal Rumble. After defeating Brian Kendrick on Raw, Mr. Kennedy proclaimed, “At No Way Out, I will do something historic, something that no one has been able to do – end the career of Ric Flair.”

Now used to dealing with loudmouthed challengers looking to make a name for themselves, Flair interrupted Kennedy’s tirade, bluntly stating, “I’ll just leave it at this – at No Way Out, good luck! Woooooo!”

When “Naitch” defeated MVP at Royal Rumble, he kept his career alive and looked more than impressive doing so. In Las Vegas, can he keep his “Space Mountain” running? Or will Mr. Kennedy’s gamble to topple of WWE’s greats earn him the biggest windfall of his career?

ECW Championship Match: Chavo Guerrero (C) vs CM Punk

For the first time in 2008, CM Punk finds himself on the challenging end of an ECW Championship Match on pay-per-view, as he meets Chavo Guerrero for the gold at No Way Out.

Despite a slew of Punk’s victories over Guerrero in early January, it only took one fortuitous night – and much assistance from the Rated-R Superstar – a few weeks ago for Chavo to seize the ECW Title. Adding another glimmer to the “Guerrero family” jewels, Chavo also made good on his New Year’s Resolution to become ECW Champion.

The Straightedge Superstar quickly retaliated against his rival and embarked on the road to reclaim the title. Punk turned the champion into a cham-piƱata during Chavo’s celebratory fiesta, then sent the Mexican Superstar for a short swim in his native country’s body of water in the first-ever Gulf of Mexico Match.

It would appear that the Straightedge Superstar is en route to a second title reign. And, if the challenger can pin Chavo on pay-per-view – just as CM Punk has done in tag team action heading into the event – the Land of the Extreme could very well crown a new ECW Champion at No Way Out.

Can Punk keep an eye on the Guerrero clan? Will the Ultimate Opportunist or his main squeeze, SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero, again play a critical role in who bears ECW gold?

-------------------------------

This card will be updated as matches are announced. Feel free to discuss any matches in this thread.

Re: No Way Out Discussion Thread

I don't really like the idea of two Elimination Chamber matches personally, especially when the SmackDown! one looks so awful.

As has been said in other places, I'd much rather have seen Punk in this match than Big Daddy V and actually had him win. Though that won't be happening so it really looks like Taker vs Edge is set in stone on SmackDown!'s side for Mania, as Rey obviously won't be beating Edge.

RAW side interests me a lot more at the moment, I'm still hoping Jeff could actually pull out an upset. Though it looks pretty certain that Trips will get the win.

The RAW main event many may think is a definite win for Cena but I'm not so sure. For the mean time at least, I see Orton getting the win in some heel way and a triple threat with Orton, Cena and Trips at Mania.

Thats my thoughts at the moment anyways.

Re: No Way Out Discussion Thread

I think there's a slight possibility that we end up with a triple threat on the Raw side with Cena, Orton, and Triple H. As for SD!, I'm a bit surprised that Undertaker isn't going to face HBK at Mania after what happened at the Rumble. Looks like Take will win this chamber (which I'm on the fence about having two of them) and go on to face Edge. It'll be interesting to see how Edge defeats Mysterio. Will they have him lose clean again?

Why are you calling Taker washed up?

He's in the best shape he's been in in years and even managed to get 3 or 4 great matches out of Batista over the past 12 months, which is more than any other wrestler as managed to do
