WWE Champion Edge vs. John Cena - TLC Match
John Cena will get one more chance at Edge’s WWE Championship at Unforgiven. But it will be in a match that Edge has never lost, and one that Cena has never been in – a Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match. And to make matters even tougher for Cena, the match will take place in Edge’s hometown of Toronto.
It is no secret that the WWE Championship means the world to John Cena. Ever since losing the gold to Rob Van Dam at ECW One Night Stand, Cena has been hell-bent on regaining the WWE Championship. It looked as though he had Edge right where he wanted him at SummerSlam, but Lita slipped the Rated R Superstar a pair of brass knuckles that eventually led to Cena’s demise.
Edge thought that would be the final chapter in the Edge vs. Cena story. He thought it was a happy ending for himself, just like he had predicted. But Cena drowned those thoughts, literally, last week on RAW from Bridgeport, Conn. Earlier in the evening, Lita tossed the WWE Championship belt into the Long Island Sound to reveal a brand new, Rated R WWE Championship belt. Cena attacked Edge later in the night and chased the Champion all the way to the same pier that the WWE Championship belt was tossed off of.
Cena threw Edge into a bulletin board, tossed him around into some bushes and then catapulted him off the pier and into the murky and polluted waters of the Long Island Sound. A distraught Edge floundered in the water until he was finally rescued by the Harbor Patrol.
The following week, with Shane McMahon calling the shots on RAW, Edge demanded that John Cena be fired from RAW. Cena came out holding a piece of paper in his hand and said that he wasn’t ready to go just yet. The paper was a contract, straight from the desk of SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long’s desk. Cena said that he would leave RAW and go to SmackDown, but before he does, he wanted one more opportunity at Edge’s WWE Championship. If Edge beat him again, then Cena would leave RAW. Edge agreed, but only under two conditions – he would name where and what type of match it would be.
Just a few moments later, Edge let his plans be known. Cena was in the middle of a match with a returning Chris Masters and had the Masterpiece in the dreaded STFU. Before Masters could tap out, Edge hit the ring and slammed Cena with a steel chair. Edge then retrieved a ladder from under the ring and blasted Cena right in the face. To finish him off, the Rated R Superstar sent his arch nemesis crashing through a table. Just to make sure he made himself clear, he explained that the match would be a Tables, Ladders and Chairs Match, and it would be at Unforgiven in his hometown of Toronto.
Will Edge be able to add another TLC victory to his resume and get Cena out of his life forever? Or will Cena emerge victorious from his first-ever TLC Match and regain the gold he craves with every ounce of his being? Tune in to Unforgiven, Sunday Sept. 17 on pay-per-view.
D-Generation X vs. The McMahons & Big Show - Hell in a Cell
Did a deranged Mr. McMahon pronounce D-Generation X’s death sentence when he ordered the duo to compete in a Hell in a Cell Match against himself, his son Shane and ECW World Champion Big Show at Unforgiven?
DX has been two thorns in the sides of the McMahons for several months. Week in and week out, their sophomoric antics have been getting under the skin of the Chairman and his son. The McMahons thought they had the perfect plan in place to take out DX at SummerSlam, but somehow, Shawn Michaels and Triple H were able to fight off the McMahons’ unlimited resources to emerge victorious.
Then, on the Aug. 21 edition of RAW, it looked as though DX finally made Mr. McMahon crack. DX said that many great men have left their marks. Columbus left his mark when he came to America, Neil Armstrong left his mark on the moon, and so DX followed in their footsteps and left their mark as well. First, HBK and The Game revealed that they had defaced Mr. McMahon’s private jet with the DX logo. Later in the evening, they also revealed that they had plastered WWE headquarters in Stamford, Conn. with their logo as well. After seeing the site of his headquarters defiled with DX green, Mr. McMahon looked like he was on the verge of tears. But DX wasn’t done yet.
The McMahons were finally ready to call it a night and got in their limo ready to head home after RAW. But before the limo could get more than a few feet away, the entire back end was ripped off. After they got out of the limo to see what was wrong, they noticed the DX logo on the limo as well. Mr. McMahon snapped as RAW went off the air.
As RAW originated from Atlantic City on Aug. 28, Shane McMahon revealed that his father was resting in a posh hotel suite, and that he would be the one calling the shots. Later in the evening, Shane was talking to Mr. McMahon on the phone, when the Chairman was interrupted by something at the door. He thought it was just room service, but an all-too familiar sound started to fill the air. DX has struck again. The duo sent over a pair of roosters, further infuriating Mr. McMahon. But it would be the Chairman who would laugh last on this night.
DX was ordered to face three hired guns from SmackDown in a Handicap Match – U.S. Champion Sir Finlay, Sir Regal and Mr. Kennedy. DX was able to overcome the numbers advantage for the win, but their night was far from over. ECW World Champion Big Show stormed the ring and began to dismantle both Triple H and Michaels. Big Show’s attack was followed up by Mr. McMahon himself, yielding a lead pipe. McMahon bashed in Triple H’s skull with his weapon of choice and knocked HBK out with a television camera. With both members of DX a bloody mess, Mr. McMahon announced that they would all face each other once again, but this time Big Show would join the McMahons and it would be in Hell in a Cell.
Both Triple H and Shawn Michaels have enjoyed success in the career-shortening Hell in a Cell, but will that matter at Unforgiven? The McMahons are the most powerful people in sports-entertainment and have unlimited resources at their disposal. Will this be DX’s death sentence? Tune in to Unforgiven Sunday, Sept. 17 on pay-per-view to find out.
Intercontinental Champion Johnny Nitro vs. Jeff Hardy
At Unforgiven, Jeff Hardy will have a second chance to unseat Johnny Nitro for the Intercontinental Championship.
In just his second week back in RAW, Hardy defeated Randy Orton to become No. 1 Contender to the gold. But when he took on Nitro on September 4, only Melina’s good timing kept the gold around the current champion’s waist.
Late in the bout, Hardy had nailed Nitro with the Twist of Fate. He covered for the pinfall, but as the referee counted to three, Melina climbed into the ring and jumped on the referee. Nitro was immediately disqualified, but while Hardy won the match, it was Nitro who walked out of Atlanta with the gold.
Later in the night, the rematch was announced for Unforgiven. Will Hardy make good on his second chance, or will lady luck once again shine on the A-List Champion? Find out at Unforgiven.
World Tag Team Champions Spirit Squad vs. The Highlanders
At Unforgiven, the Spirit Squad will defend the World Tag Team Championship against cousins Rory and Robbie McAllister, The Highlanders.
The Highlanders made their RAW debut only two months ago, and after three consecutive victories they made a challenge to the Spirit Squad for a World Tag Team Championship Match. The match took place on July 24, with the Squad retaining their gold thanks to the strength of their virtual 5-on-2 advantage.
The Highlanders didn’t give up, however. In subsequent weeks, Rory beat Johnny in a singles match and the Highlanders helped Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Eugene even out the 5-on-2 odds and pick up a non-title win over the Squad. Finally, on August 21, The Highlanders, Duggan & Eugene defeated the Squad in an Eight-Man Tag Team Match to give Rory & Robbie two straight non-title wins over the champions.
On Labor Day in Atlanta, the cousins finally earned their rematch by winning a Triple Threat Tag Team Match to become No. 1 Contenders to the gold. Will the Scottish pair finally make good on their second chance at Unforgiven, or will Kenny, Johnny, Mitch, Nicky and Mikey leave Toronto with the gold still around their waists?
Carlito vs. Randy Orton
At Unforgiven, a rivalry that has been brewing in recent weeks will come to a head when Carlito takes on Randy Orton.
A few weeks ago, an innocent meeting in the locker room area started the whole issue between the two. Carlito commented on Orton’s loss to Hulk Hogan at SummerSlam, and when Orton later continued to attack Ric Flair after their match, the Caribbean Superstar rushed out to the ring, sending Orton fleeing to the locker room.
On the August 28 RAW in Atlantic City, the Legend Killer ambushed Carlito as after he had shared a kiss with Trish Stratus. Orton left both laying, but the Caribbean Superstar would soon get his revenge; Carlito spit a mouthful of apple into Orton’s face during his match with Jeff Hardy, costing the Legend Killer the chance to become No. 1 Contender to the Intercontinental Championship.
The following week, Carlito teamed with John Cena and Trish Stratus to face Randy Orton, Edge and Lita in a Six-Person Intergender Tag Team Match. With Trish and Lita left in the ring, Orton snuck back in and dropped Trish with an RKO, allowing Lita to get the pin. Carlito tried to help, but he was held outside the ring by Edge as Orton surveyed his damage.
Now, these two will settle their differences one-on-one at Unforgiven. Will the Legend Killer prevail or will it be a “cool” trip to Toronto for Carlito? Find out on Sept. 17.
Kane vs. Umaga
It will be a clash of heavy artillery at Unforgiven when the Big Red Machine, Kane, faces Samoan Bulldozer Umaga.
Since his WWE debut in April, Umaga has run through every opponent in his path with ease thanks to the dangerous Samoan Spike. And on the August 21 RAW, it was the Big Red Monster who fell victim to the Samoan Bulldozer’s dangerous signature move.
The night before at SummerSlam, Kane came to the ring to prevent Umaga from helping the McMahons in their match with DX; the Big Red Monster cut him off before he got to the ring, and the two battled back to the locker room as DX finished off the Chairman and his son Shane.
Looking for revenge on RAW, Umaga interrupted Kane’s match with Intercontinental Champion Johnny Nitro. Some vicious headbutts and a pair of Samoan Spikes left Kane bleeding in the middle of the ring, and he wasn’t seen again for weeks.
Finally, Kane returned on Labor Day in Atlanta. As Umaga stalked Ric Flair in the ring, the Big Red Monster came out. Kane took it to the Samoan Bulldozer, sending him and manager Armando Alejandro Estrada fleeing from the ring.
So what will happen at Unforgiven? Will Kane finally be the one to end Umaga’s five-month undefeated streak, or will the Big Red Monster get mowed down by the Samoan Bulldozer just like everyone else?
Women's Champion Lita vs. Trish Stratus
Since their first encounter back in 2000, Trish Stratus and Lita have had a love-hate relationship. They’ve been friends and they’ve been enemies, but there has been an undeniable (and at times very heated) rivalry between the two Divas for nearly seven years.
On Sept. 17, Unforgiven will mark the final chapter of the story; Trish is retiring following Unforgiven, and in her hometown of Toronto, she will meet Lita for the Women’s Championship in her final match.
Lita and Trish have warred over the Women’s Championship before; in December 2004, Lita defeated Trish on RAW to win her second of three Women’s Championships. One month later at New Year’s Revolution 2005, Trish won her sixth (and so far, last) Women’s Championship in the rematch when Lita tore her ACL during the bout.
That was their last one-on-one encounter, and in fact, Trish and Lita had very little contact with one another after Lita aligned herself with Edge later that summer…that is, until Lita dropped a bombshell on WWE.com.
Prior to RAW on August 21, Lita gave WWE.com the breaking news that Trish was set to retire following Unforgiven. Lita had overheard a conversation Trish was having with her parents about it, and decided to help Trish break the news. Carlito confronted Trish about this later in the night, and the six-time Women’s Champion was upset but not surprised that Lita had done this to her.
The following week, Trish tried to explain the decision to her fans, but Lita once again interrupted. Trish was happy to see her, however, calling her out for one final battle. Lita accepted, making the match for Unforgiven; but later in the night, Lita pinned Trish in a Six-Person Intergender Tag Team Match after Randy Orton gave Trish an RKO.
Trish Stratus is a six-time Women’s Champion. Can she make it lucky number seven on her final night as a WWE Superstar, or will Lita send the hometown hero out on the losing end?
