I don't understand how people say Punk needs cred. The guy won every title on Raw in a year, won the MITB twice, and is constantly getting pushed. Punk in my eyes already has enough credibility to be a World champ, but a clean win over Kane would just help.
Yes, Punk has won every Title on Raw, and been ECW champion... But his reigns for the most part meant nothing. His ECW reign was the only one that seemed to mean anything, and even then he was side-lined far to long for the fans to care about his eventual win. His World Title win meant nothing because of the way he won it and the fact WWE insisted on putting him in fueds against much, much bigger guys and making him look weak but lucky. He held the Tag Titles with Kofi, in a tag team that meant less than nothing to anyone outside of Punk's core fanbase, for the amount of time it takes to make a cup of coffee. And his IC Title reign was quicker than a hiccup and was spent in the most part facing William Regal, in matches than Punk never really looked great in.
He is continually portrayed as the lucky survivor. He's basically the babyface version of Edge's current character. To call that a push (and I mean a real push) is ridiculous. He's never been made to look a serious threat to anyone in the WWE. It's pathetic and nonesensical to me, but he would in no way look credible as World Champ at the moment.

I still didn't see him as a "lucky survivor" for most of it. I saw it more as "a guy who needs to prove he's as good as he is" kind of thing, but everytime he's about to prove it something stops it. Which as I said before would lead to a payoff if done right.
And EVERYONE was marking when he won the ECW title, so I wouldn't say it was too late. The only problem with it was A.it was on ECW B.the show was pretaped so a lot of us knew, and C. the matches leading up had shit finishes besides 15 min of fame.
Edit: Not to say Punk is super credible because he isn't. He needs a few big wins for sure. But to me, that's more so because of what happened after the title reign as opposed to what happened during it. Punk went from a midcarder to a guy who beat JBL several times, Kane, went toe to toe with fucking Batista, had very good/even matches with Jericho, and ....broke Snitsky's nose >.>

I have to agree with Ken to a degree. Punk's role reminds of the firey young lion who can take the fight to the more established guys and come close to beating them. I wouldn't say he's a credible top guy/world-beater/ace/whatever sort, and I'd have a hard time buying him going over someone like Batista or Cena at this point, but a win over Kane should be expected and it's atleast one step in the right direction.

Yes but he's not credible enough right now. It would indeed be one step in the right direction but he really needs quite a few more big wins before he is fully established as a main event level wrestler. Kane can be the starting point, but I want to see him go over one of the top stars at least once.
Considering in 2002 Shelton Benjamin went over Triple H a couple of times, I don't see why WWE are so reluctant to put ANYONE over their top stars nowadays. Everyone is just so overprotected and it creates too much of a gulf between the top guys and everybody else, meaning WWE will suffer long term.
I am not saying it wouldn't be easy to make Punk credible though. Just a few months of strong booking with constant PPV exposure and some wins over big names.

But I think most of us agree he's not credible enough NOW however as I said, I think after his title reign hurt him far more than his title reign itself.
