The last couple of years we have seen celebrities involved in the Wrestlemania card and play a significant part in the build up and promotion of the event. In 2007, it was Donald Trump embroiled in the ''Battle of the Billionaires'' with Mr McMahon, and last year we saw Floyd 'Money' Mayweather take on The Big Show in a David vs Goliath type battle of skill vs power. Obviously there have been numerous celebrities involved in Wrestlemania throughout the history of the PPV extravanganza, with such names as Mike Tyson, Mr T and Pete Rose playing their part in the show.
This year, there have been persistent rumours of Jericho taking on ''The Wrestler'' star and award winning actor Mickey Rourke, but the last we heard is that his participation at Wrestlemania is off.
Obviously the main purpose of these appearances is to promote the show and get casual fans and even non wrestling fans talking about it. Nobody cares about wrestling besides fans, but if you get celebrities involved, the news reports on it and the publicity increases, meaning more buys.
However, do you actually approve of this method of drawing buys? It is cheap? Does it take something away from the show when the most hyped star on the card isn't even a contracted wrestler?

I heard Verne Troyer is being bought in to wrestle the Big Show. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

I personally love celebrity involvment. I think it makes the show more memorable, and it's fun. Mayweather/Show was highly entertaining, and the build was awesome. One of the best parts of Raw leading to Wrestlemania. I could go on a little more, but I'd be repeating myself.

Though I agree the Mayweather/Show match was very entertaining, the build was irritating in my opininion and really showed how little WWE knew about Mayweather as a person. The guy was supposed to be playing a face, and came across more heel than Big Show, who was the heel. That said, it was still the best celebrity match too date at 'Mania.
I have no problem with celebrity involvement at Wrestlemania, or on any event for that matter, as long as it's done sparringly and correctly. If Rourke's involvement does go ahead then I can see it being done properly. Unless the 'E decide he should play his part in The Wrestler rather than himself. Then it'll be all kinds of retarded.
Wrestlemania was built on celebrity involvement. Without Cindy Lauper, I have to wonder if Wrestlemania would of been as big of a success. Whenever they don't have a celebrity (For some inexplicable reason they decided to go in the opposite approach in the mid nineties), the Wrestlemania suffered from a lack of big feel. As long as they choose the right celebrity (Someone who actually fits in and the public still cares about) they draw in more buys. With the overall quality of Lauper's Rock 'n' Wrestling storyline, LT being disrespected by Bigelow and most recently Mayweather, I can't seem to find a justifiable reason not to have them on. As long as they continue to keep the ones who can't wrestle from wrestling while carefully scripting the ones who can, it's going to continue to produce quality.
The celebrities is just another one of the things that makes Wrestlemania stand out from others. It's also how Summerslam used to stand out from taking the opposite approach.

It is definitely one of the things that makes Wrestlemania stand out from other PPVs, but I can't help but feel they go over the top with it. When they get a celebrity involved, they are hyped more than any wrestler, and more build is dedicated to their angle. Can it really be good to have a random celebrity given more attention than the main event, just for the sake of some more buys?

I love celebrity involvement at Wrestlemania providing it's done right. It gives a larger than life feeling. Bands, actors, sports stars, etc. all add to the shows making it feel bigger and better. AC/DC for example would have made it feel huge. Even Saliva and Drowning Pool helped make Manias feel huge.

In my opinion, though, sometimes it is bad because WWE feel that if they have the celebrity match, they don't have to make much of an effort with the rest of the card. An example is Wrestlemania 23. Yes, they had the two title matches of course, but because they were doing Battle of the Billionaires as the most hyped match even though the actual wrestlers involved wern't big draws, they neglected the rest of the card and didn't bother booking anything else big. It is certainly detrimental to Wrestlemania in that respect.

Well in that case I certainly agree. I won't say the celebrity involvement shouldn't get the MOST hype, but at the same time the entire Mania card should be hyped up.
