Re: Tut Tut WWE

that can get so much more ratings with they just use matt sydal, because when the word goes around no-one will no what any one is talking about. maybe we'll just ahve to wait and see in whats g9oing to happen in the upcoming weeks of ecw, maybe there "trying" to put him into a disguise of some sort to shock the world at the next PPV or something like that.

It's not an insult, but if you watch RoH and peruse internet wrestling boards, you are a "wrasslin' geek". Trust me, everyone else here is too. We all are. The only thing in dispute is that some are geekier than others.

I don't think Matt Sydal is that big of a name that if word was spread that he's going to be on WWE television then suddenly WWE are going to draw some huge numbers somehow.

Anyways, when I first saw this I thought it was going to be some sort of Bourne Identity gimmick myself, but I guess they could always just prefer this name for him.

I disagree that watching ROH and posting on message boards makes you a geek, and I never took it as an insult, I think you're wrong, but that's beside my point. Like I said, he debuted on WWE television as Matt Sydal, so even a casual viewer (that wouldn't be considered a "wrasslin' geek" by your low standards) would know him as Matt Sydal, as would almost anyone who's ever seen him wrestle before.

Re: Tut Tut WWE

But a casual viewer would have no interest in the back story or the name of a wrestler. I'd find it highly unlikely that anyone who just switches WWE on every once in a while will think: "Hang on... That chap there... He was on last time I watched... But what's this? His name's changed!" They're far more likely to just watch it, and flick away next time there's an advert.

At the end of the day, Creative will choose a name that's 1. Marketable, and 2. Easily trademarked.

If they create a name themselves, and after that point Sydal becomes a big name, it stops him jumping ship to TNA or whatever, and using his WWE name.

I doubt the casual viewer is going to remember the name of a guy he's seen once & lost the match. They may recognize him but i doubt many would have taken note of his name.

First of all, the back story of his name really has nothing to do with it. He was introduced as Matt Sydal on WWE television...that's pretty much the whole story from a casual viewer's standpoint. And I only submitted the term "casual viewer" to counter the term "wrasslin' geek", which subjectively meant anyone who knows who Matt Sydal is from things he has done outside of WWE. I meant someone who watches WWE regularly and actually pays attention to the show, not just someone who watches every once in a while. With the way I'm using the term "casual" viewers is interchangeable with regular viewers.

I think that at the very least, people will realize that his name wasn't Evan Bourne last week. If he had debuted as a jobber to Vladmir Koslov like a couple months ago in a 45-second squash match, then I think it'd be fine for him now to be called something different. But he was on just last week as "Matt Sydal", in what was a somewhat competitive match with Shelton Benjamin, who is obviously a pretty important name on ECW. Maybe I'm being presumptuous, but I think that at least a majority of people paid enough attention and are going to remember that this guy tested Shelton Benjamin last week, and that his name wasn't Evan Bourne.

Re: Tut Tut WWE

From what I remember, Steve Austin debuted as the Ringmaster, and eventually had his changed to "Stone Cold". I think that worked out fine for him.

Really, who cares? People change gimmicks and names all the time, they just did it a little quicker with Bourne. In actuality, if they were gonna change his name, it's good that they did it now before he started gaining steam. Because if they hadn't now, they would have had to change it months down the line when he became more established.

And now, here it is...your moment of Carlin (10/10/2008)

Re: Tut Tut WWE

Taken from the ECW preview for this week.

Quote:
Also on ECW, Shelton Benjamin was victorious over newcomer Matt Sydal, but afterward, Kofi Kingston attacked the Gold Standard. But Benjamin had the last laugh after he threw Kingston into the steel stairs. Since Benjamin was the first to defeat the Jamaican Superstar a few weeks ago on ECW, Kingston has been seeking revenge. Will Kingston be able to restart another winning streak, or will the Gold Standard continue his dominance in the ECW ring?
The refer to him as Matt Sydal here so maybe he wont be changing his name after all.

Except how much of your average WWE fan has watched all of those promotions. How many watched him in ROH or Dragon Gate?
