Batter Deuce & Domino...The Real Deal?

Any one of us that watches Smackdown has seen the new team of Deuce & Domino, accompanied by Cherry, compete over the last few weeks. Granted they were called up pretty suddenly to the WWE, and thus are still fresh and a little green...but do you think they have lasting power?

I say no. At least not at this point.

The gimmick is VERY early 90's. Now if they were out there competing against Doink & Dink...maybe I'd be able to get behind the greaser gimmick. Hell, as a little kid growing up back then, my friends and I would create our own wrestlers and accompanying crude costumes and have it out in each other's basements, either against each other or against or stuffed wrestling buddies. And NO LIE, my character was called "The Greaser"...blue jeans, a cut off white t-shirt, and my hair slicked back with the fingerless black leather biker gloves.

And why am I mentioning any of that? To relate the fact that I was working that when I was eight years old...and to see it come to light some fifteen years later is funny, but also insulting to us as fans in a way I think.

The gimmick is going to run its course VERY quickly. Everytime Domino (or is it Deuce?) gets on the mic, or even walking in the back, he's screaming the same thing: "You lookin at my girl?" I'm going to get tired of this very quickly.

And flash forward to the inevitable split of Cherry from the team...you KNOW she will end up getting tired of being yelled at by him at some point and fall for a member of a competing team...what's he going to yell about then?

Does it seem like I'm staying very negative on these two? I am, but only for the means of being objective. I really want to get behind these guys, but debuting with a somewhat similiar, yet slightly different gimmick would've worked wonders for me.

Imagine these two as "mafia members". Capitalize on the recent successes of The Sopranos and the continuous interest in Scarface. Not as some cheesy FBI-style knock off, but two guys that come out in pinstripe suits. Still have Cherry with Domino (or Deuce) dressed in a "WCW, Stacy Keibler/Miss Hancock" type outfitting with a briefcase.

They have a somewhat hardnose approach in the ring and could have an APA type feel to them. Could still have jealousy radiating over Cherry, yet have them in the ring doing a promo...member of another team interrupts him face to face...have one of the two yell, "Do you know who you're talking to? DO YOU KNOW HOW YOU'RE TALKING TO?" And follow that up immediately with a slap that'd knock the taste right out of his mouth.

Name the finisher the "Kiss of Death" or something that's a mafia cliche...there are SO many floating around out there. Have them stay aggressive and maybe even see the return of a Bar Room Brawl, with them choking out guys with pool sticks.

Ugggh...I don't know. I'd just see SO much more promise for these two if it were along these lines.

Either way, I think they have a good look as a team. Seeing the finish to their debut match - the kick to the face - I actually caught myself yelling "OHHHH" out loud. I just think that repackaged in another deal...they'd do wonders.

But Smackdown has become the gimmick circus of the WWE lately...a Boogeyman, a Deadman, an Irish leprachaun, a guy dressed like a power ranger, and now a flashback to the 1950's...yet in a way, it almost adds to Smackdown's charm

Re: Deuce & Domino...The Real Deal?

You just help me realised why i was so mixed about the team - its a flashback to my childhood but they are medicore workers at best for now.

a mafia gimmick would be cool, but wasn't something similar tested with the FBI version of nunzio, palumbo and stamboli? I liked the idea but it never really gathered any steam. A pinstripe version may be just another cheesy gimmick IMO and I prefer an FBI style mafia. Although for a mafia stable to work, I reckon one more person will be needed at least.

Anyway bottom line, deuce and domino will split/jobsville regulars by around summerslam

Re: Deuce & Domino...The Real Deal?

I think the gimmick could work if they allowed it to be more current. Because honestly when I go out, at certain bars you will find groups of dudes who still have a greaser/rockabilly style. But its a newer mix of punk/rockabilly, and the girls are always twice as hardcore looking. I think had they gone that route, it could have worked longer.
