ECW Review for 8/2/06 Big Show vs. Batista

Danny Diamond ECW Review for August 2nd 2006.

As usual I will review these shows as I watch them.

Before I start this weeks review, and before I watch what will most likely be a cheap finish with Batista vs. Big Show, I would like to say a thing or two about ECW.

ECW is a great concept and while I think everyone accepts that its not the same as it used to be when Heyman owned it, it still doesn’t have that “individual” status. ECW needs to focus on their roster, not having Big Show challenging every top WWE guy. I understand that they are doing this to make Big Show look legit as a champion in the Extreme atmosphere, but what will they do after he goes through the WWE’s top guys? Destroy the Tommy Dreamers and Sandman’s of the world?

Is this all to set up for Sabu to win the title off Big Show? I just question the logic of trying to establish ECW as its own brand, but week after week featuring any one of the matches Show had over the years in the WWE against WWE guys. Just doesn’t work for me.

Sabu will most likely win the title off Big Show sooner than later, but I really wonder if they have thought about what they will do after that. RVD?

Ok here we go. Let the bodies hit the floor.

Mike Knox & Test vs. Tommy Dreamer & Sandman.

It’s about freaking time we see some cool tag action like this. Sandman is a cool figure in wrestling. Recap of Sandman and Knox’s interaction and how Kelly keeps getting involved.

Sandman is busted open from a beer can before he even enters the ring. He sure has lost a lot of weight since the first ONS. Good to see. It’s also good to see Tommy Dreamer back in action too. He was so underutilized in the WWE. Its looks like they are in NYC. They should really do it there every other week.

Kelly comes out with Test and Knox. Tazz questions again why Kelly is with Mike Knox. First of all, they should have teamed her with the most handsome wrestler not this blockhead Mike Knox.

Sandman takes on Test and Dreamer goes after Knox. Knox stops Sandman and both Test and Knox team up on Sandman. “You can’t wrestle” chant to Test. Test goes for the Sandman’s cane but is stopped by Dreamer. Dreamer and Sandman take just about everything out from under the ring and toss it in the ring. “We want tables” chant. Dreamer and Sandman answer with a barbed wired plywood. They set it up in the corner and go for a double suplex on Knox in the plywood but is caned by Test. Dreamer is busted wide open.

More “You can’t wrestle chants.” Dreamer and Sandman get the advantage and toss both men out of the ring. Sandman jumps out, grabs his cane and goes after Knox but is blocked by Kelly Kelly again. Yes, her name is actually the same name twice. How cute.

Sandman tosses Kelly into the ring and dodges a Knox clothesline. He begins to beat the daylights out of Knox with his Singapore cane. Sandman keeps beating him as Knox retreats to the back leaving Kelly alone in the ring with a bloody Dreamer.

”Show your tits” chant is loud and clear. Dreamer asks the crowd “Shhh” like, “Your going to blow it”. Funny stuff. Dreamer leans her over for a kiss, but changes his mind and bends her over for a spanking.

__________________

As Dreamer is spanking her, Heyman's bodyguards come out and lay the smackdown on Dreamers candy ass. They hold Dreamer back as Heyman holds his arms out like a god. (I don’t care for this cult leader type thing they are trying to do). Heyman instructs the bodyguards (the Bashmans) to toss him onto the barbed wire. Dreamer lets out a loud howl.

Oh apparently the match wasn’t over. Test comes into the ring, picks up Dreamer and throws him back on the barbed wire. He then picks up Dreamer for his new swinging neck breaker finisher on Dreamer.

Winners: Mike Knox and Test.

Hulk Hogan Promo (See my last 5 reviews about how stupid it is to constantly promote the WWE during these broadcasts)

Heyman is walking backstage when all the wrestlers turn their back on Heyman. Heyman is confronted by Sabu who says he wants a title shot. He says Sabu does whatever it takes to get a win and he can’t subject his champion to that sort of match.

He asks Sabu to leave the building, basically the easy way or the hard way. Sabu will play a part in the finish.

CM. Punk Promo.

Man, I have heard some good things about his in-ring ability, but imagine if he stinks? Ha-ha,. Oh man it would just look so bad. I reckon he wont be bad, but I am expecting quite a bit. He can talk the talk, time to walk the walk.

Diva Search Promo.

Justin Credible vs. C.M. Punk

Strong response for CM Punk. He looks like a ball of energy. Loud C.M.Punk chant.

Punk starts off with lots of amateur wrestling maneuvers and then gets Credible in a tree of woe type move with Punk using the ropes as leverage. Punk goes for a swinging neck breaker off the top rope but is tossed to the ground by Credible.

Credible goes for a pin and gets the two count. He then chops him in the back a couple times in the back. Credible the gets a couple suplexes on Punk. Credible then applies a submission move to Punk. Punk finally powers out of the move.

This guy sure is taking a lot of abuse for a debut.

Punk finally gets a flying clothesline off the top rope and a few kicks with a high knee into a bulldog followed by a Rock Bottom styled Erugani. Yeah, I don’t know how to spell that move, thus explaining the Rock Bottom comment. Ha-ha.

He turns it into a chokehold submission for the tap out.

I like his promos but he was a touch unimpressive in the ring. It wasn’t so much him though; more that he was made to sell for Credible too much. He should have taken him out quicker is all. No knock on Punk.

Promo for Shannon Doherty, I mean Moore. Yup, he is still coming.

Back from commercial the Brooklyn Brawler is in the ring? He says he will be the next ECW world champion.

Kurt “No longer suspended” Angle suddenly returns with no mention till now.

Kurt Angle vs. Brooklyn Brawler.

“Welcome back” chant.

Angle immediately goes for the Angle Lock. Brawler screams “I’m not afraid of you Kurt” and pushes Kurt. Kurt responds with a head butt and goes for the Angle Lock again. I think Brawler tapped before the move was even applied.

Crowd is happy to see Kurt back.

Big Show promo selling all his defeats and making him look larger than life.

Ariel promo talking about her new man. The Vampire man introduces himself as Kevin Thorn.

Main Event time:

Big Show vs. Batista ECW World Championship match

Crowd boos Batista as they are showing their ECW loyalty apparently. Wait, he is booed too. Ha-ha. “You both suck” Chants. I am sorry, but these guys don’t suck and deserve better. ECW crowds are funny, but can take it too far with shit that is just disrespectful.

Back from commercial break Big Show has Batista down and out in the ring. “Same old shit” chant by the crowd. Big show give the ‘money’ sing and points to himself.

Big Show looks legit pissed at the crowd.

Big Show climbs to the top rope, well second turnbuckle. Batista gets a suplex off on Big Show. Tazz comments again that the crowd is booing both people in the ring.

Batista gets a spear off on Big Show and a two-count pinfall. The crowd chant boring and Tazz acknowledges that “this match is anything but boring”. I am sorry, but I don’t know what the ECW fans are exactly looking for.

Spine buster on Big Show. He goes for a Batista Bomb but its reversed into a backdrop by Big Show.

Right in front of the referee he clocks Batista with the title belt getting DQ’d. He hits Batista with it again and knock him out of the ring. As Show is celebrating in the ring, Sabu comes in from behind and throws a chair in Shows face. He then gets a leg drop onto a chair. Show is outside the ropes now teetering again. Sabu kicks a chair into Shows face and Show crashes into the announce table .

Crowd is chanting Sabu and ECW this whole time. They are eating him up like a bag of gummy bears.

Show looks frightened then angered as the camera fades out.

Not a bad episode. For once I thought the crowd in NYC had a negative effect on the show.

Thanks for reading.

DD

I'm sorry but i have to ask: Why is that?
Why do you feel that ECW has to be a different way than it is? You already recognized it's a different product, so there's no need to compare to something it used to be. It can't be the ratings, because they're doing very well. ECW doesn't have their own roster in the sense Raw has or SD has. Sure some of the so called 'originals' are there, but ECW is merely a tool, for the lack of a better word, WWE found to push the people they want when they want with a strong and well known name brand to support those pushes. They don't care for the Credibles, Dreamers and Sandmans. They wanna push the Tests, Knoxes and Shows. So there's not really any 'roster' they should be focusing on. If they feel that Show as champion is a draw - and if you agree or not with that assumption is irrelevant - they're gonna push him the way they think is best for that purpose and for the WWE product they wanna present.

On a personal note, i'm not sure but i think this whole Big Show's booking is indeed Heyman's idea. Vince McMahon just gave the green light.

I don't think they need to take it that far. And it's not so much the Big Show looking legit, but the title itself. I'm sure RVD will become champion again or maybe even Sabu before that, but by then one of them will be the guy who beat the guy who beat that whole bunch of WWE top guys. And that's really what the ECW title is meant to be about.

I have to disagree with you, I don't think the crowd had a negative effect at all. That crowd made that show and hopefully it shows WWE that they just can't keep bringing a Smackdown or Raw guy over to there.

I can't wait till I'm at Summerslam to see Big Show and Sabu.

You didnt notice that they essentially shit on everyone except Sabu and Sandman?

There is a difference between showing heel heat from a crowd, and being flat out disrespectful.

These idiot fans need to realize that ECW is D-E-A-D and has been for YEARS.

Crowds only want what the WWE is NOT giving them. Plain and simple.

Its off topic, but it makes a point about the overall generic wrestling fan. Go do a search here at JVN about 6 months before Cena took the title off JBL at Mania. Look at how many people were all about Cena. Once he wins the title they freaking hate him.

These are also the same people that start threads nowadays saying "I want HHH to win the title"

Its laughable. And fans wonder why Vince continues to feed up crap. Because he can't make heads or tails or what the crowd wants anymore.

At least I can say I didn't jump on the Edge band wagon. People here can remember i've been supporting the idea of Edge as WWE Champion for well over a year and continue to think he makes a good champion.

I didn't stop liking Cena when he won the belt, I stopped liking him when he turned face and stopped all the things his character did(like the raps dissing the crowd and his opponents, and without the toilet humor among other things).

That's a fine observation. Even if he was instructed to spank her thighs, he should have at least gotten a tiny feel.

ECW this week was a decent show. I liked most of the crowd's interaction, CM Punk had a nice debut, and the opening match was entertaining.

The crowd getting on Show and Batista is to be expected. They should be a little more lenient to Show because he's commited and in this for the long haul but Batista had no business being in the match on that night. It would have been different if they were in front of a non-ECW crowd.

With ECW supposedly getting a new deal with Sci-Fi and also their own tapings, they will most likely do away with the crossover matches because they will no longer need to assure themselves high ratings based on already established talent. Look for them to debut and/or push more stars and incoporate them into the main events in the near future.

ECW stinks! Sorry, but I had to say it. The show's been nothing but a disappointment since it started...I can't even watch it anymore.

I hope CM Punk continues to get over...but I have a feeling performing in front of a SD! crowd won't produce the same reaction as this last week.
