On Smackdown! Paul Burchill told Palmer Canon that he wants to highlight his "pirate" lineage.
So it looks like there is a new WWE gimmick. What do you think of the gimmick? Will it be another waste of wrestling like the boogeyman or Spirit Squad?
I like Burchill, and I actually think this could be a good gimmick. It hasent been done I don't think. Hopefully WWE doesent ruin it though.

A pirate gimmick would work with a guy like Dustin Rennels, someone with fantastic comedic timing who can play off of the obsurdity of a pirate walking around backstage.
I believe a pirate gimmick has been done before in WWE, in the 80s or early 90s.
I'm not 100% sure (if someone could correct me that would be great), but I think it was Montreal's Pierre Carl Ouellette (from the Quebecers and I think he was also The Mountie, and a longtime partner of Ray Rougeau) who had a pirate gimmick, can someone confirm or deny this for me plz.

Confirmed. It would be interesting to see if they bring Ouellette in as maybe his manager... but that would make sense, so probably not.

It sounds ludicrous, and could be career suicide, so let's just keep our fingers crossed and hope it goes well for him.
He is a terrific high spot wrestler for a guy of his size.....but that would be just be stooopid to saddle someone with the gimmick that they are actually a wrestler wouldn't it? Far better that they are a pirate. It feels like 1985 all over again (lol...not that any of you would remember that!!)

Considering that Burchill is never on TV anymore(and i'm sorry, but Heat and Velocity don't count anymore) i'm all for whatever it takes to get him back on TV. However, this is just a terrible gimmick(although better than the Spirit Squad) and will do nothing to help him.

I will reserve judgement until for now. If they have him dress like a pirate with an eye patch and that sort of thing it will be bad.
If they just have him act like a pirate, like a guy with a cold callous attitude it could be kind of interesting. So I will just wait and see where they are going with this.

They did this a few years ago with "Jean Pierre-Lafitte" aka one of the Ouellette brothers and it didn't work at all, in fact it flopped. So wouldn't be surprised if it blew again.

I still don't understand why the Regal-Burchill team wasn't given more time on SD! I thought they made a good pairing and could've been decent tag team champions but WWE never did anything with them after putting them in a team.
