Classic Superstars: Ken Shamrock

I'm gonna start doing a few retrospective threads where we can discuss some of the superstars of days gone by. I wanna start with Shamrock, because he was one of my favourites in the Attitude era.

The intensity and believability he posessed was unmatched at the time and his Ankle Lock made me wince.

Feel free to add your Shamrock memories here and also discuss whether or not you would want to see him return to WWE.

I personally would because there is a Battle of the Ankle Lock Match with Kurt Angle that just has to happen

Summerslam 1997 against the bulldog was one of my favourite shamrock moments. Suplexing all those officials and then screaming get out of my way was awesome.
There was also his lengthy fued with the rock that brought out the best of both men.

I still hope the Angle - Shamrock feud can go down one day.

It was regrettable that Ken really lacked any charisma at all, the guy made Benoit look like the King of Personality. He had pretty much everything else you needed to make it. He's style was stiff and believable, he had some good athleticism to go with a quality look.

Somewhere it went wrong though. His initial feud with The Rock was excellent and spanned most of a good first year for him (including the most vile chair shot in the face I think I've ever seen) and I enjoyed the fued with Owen too which threw up some good matches.

The heel turn didn't sit well with me. I like c0cky heels (Perfect, Rude, Angle etc) and Ken just didn't have the personality to play a heel for me. Maybe it could have worked had he had a top notch manager but by the time of the Ryan Shamrock crap and his snoozeworthy tag pairing with Bossman, people had lost interest.

From a match viewpoint it's a shame he went when he did, had he been there a year or two longer we would have had matches with Angle, Jericho, Benoit, Tazz and Eddie to have remembered him better for.

True and the way he left was such an anti-climax. Who would want their WWF career to end with an attack by Chris Jericho and Howard Finkel?

"Oh my god, i killed Kenny!"

I've always wanted to see that.

I personally liked his feud with Owen Hart, where they had a match in a Lions Den and also the Hart Dungeon, a match I will soon be adding to the WVM Forum (Sorry Cheep Plug!!)

I loved his theme music aswell. It went well with his character, intense and something to get you in the Zone.

That reminds me of the DX - Corporate Ministry feud and the only time I laughed at XPac. He was playing Shamrock and everytime any of the others asked him a question he'd get all angry and shout "I'm in the Zoooooooooonnnnnnnnne....it's five knuckle shuffle tiiiiiiiimmmmmmmmmme"

Man, i LOVED this guy...he was like "the most dangerous man in the world"

Hahah, his ankle lock was so tight...everytime he did it, he would scream at the top of his lungs and put a crazy expression on his face...man, that was awesome...

Shamrock was one of my favorites. He was really intense, especially when he locked in the ankle lock and it looked like he really was trying to snap his opponents ankles.

His feud with The Rock was one I really enjoyed. My favorite was at WrestleMania XIV when he initially beat Rocky by submission, but after beating down the other Nation of Domination members and re-applying the ankle lock the ref reversed his decision. Then he snapped again and beat up the refs who had come to the ring.

Yeah he had a bad run as a heel and shouldn't have been teamed up with the Big Bossman, but he was still great. I'm not sure if he would want to return to WWE since I think he prefers MMA, but I would be happy if he made a return. Afterall, did anybody expect Viscera to return?

Visit and shop for video games at my Amazon-based store, also get discounted HD DVDs while they last.
