The Big Belts

Have Big Dave and John Cena held them too long?

In the distant past only heels ever held the belt (old regional days when people used to turn out to see if the regions babyface could steal the belt). In recent years (98-circa today) WWE has kinda followed the same pattern I.E. HHH holding the belt so long that you'd wanna see the PPV were he dropped it and to a lesser extent JBL. Now we all know coming out of WM you will always have a face Champ but has having Batista and John Cena hold the belts for so long helped or hindered the WWE. I would encourage posters to look at all sides of the story, does a face champ pull bigger house shows three times a week. Would a heel champ make more since raking in PPV buys? Please discuss

I had a sig, once.

Ill ellibrorate a bit later but i think to say is a heel or babyface better for buisness isnt relevant anymore....if you read numerous posts on here it often goes...

"Such and such deserves a title shot...."

"Such and such has limited abilitys, but great on the mic"

"Chris beniot should have another run......*Aheam*"

I think to the casual/non-internet fan, as long as there is a story line involved "Evolution break up..HHH v orton, HHH v Batista" it dosent matter if the champ is baby or heel?

But to the internet guys out there..(Thats us!) we want people we think are deserving, i.e. the cris beniots, the eddie gurrerro`s of this world...but if you want it real life....in real life..shit happens (and you stuck in a programme with orlando jordan!!!)

Stay Tuna`d to find out more

I think they have both done good Jobs with the belt, but I would love to see Angle take it off Cena. They also need to put Batista into a program.

Thanks for the memories Eddie!

I think it is good business when you have the face chasing the heel champion, as opposed to the face champion fending off numerous heel challengers. Although, under the right circumstances, having a face champion can be very good for business. Bruno was successful in the 60's and 70's, Hogan in the 80's and Austin and Rock in the late 90's.

As for if I think Cena and Batista have held the belt too long, I'll say yes and no. I think Batista should stay champion until WWE can come up with a suitable contender to take the title away. Right now the only guys that fans would accept in that spot would be Randy Orton and the Undertaker ... and maybe Eddie and Chris Benoit. No one wants to see JBL with the strap anymore and hopefully WWE won't put the belt on him next week.

I do think Cena should drop the title to Angle. Angle has been booked perfectly in the last few weeks and I think fans would have a hard time buying that Cena could beat Angle in a match right now. So, I would have Cena lose to Angle and then WWE could go any number of ways with the storyline. Plus, Cena is still young so there's no reason to keep the title on him forever, he'll win it numerous times over the next few years. Batista, though, has a shorter career lifespan so I think you need to maximize his drawing power and right now people love seeing Batista dominate the competition.

The biggest thing that I consider as far as when WWE decides to have one of the main titles drop is who are the contenders that the new champ can face that we haven't seen 100x over?

For example, things got stale when HHH would hold the title for an extended period of time, lose it, and then win it back soon thereafter. He had already feuded with all of the top babyface contenders over the belt, and the face that he dropped the belt to lost it back to him as a continuation of their feud, so there was no "new blood" in the World Title picture.

That said, let's see what heels Cena has left to feud with over the WWE Title:
Kurt Angle (current)
HHH (please no)
Edge
HBK (he's a tweener now, so it would work)

If, say, Kurt or another heel won it, here's who they'd have to work with:
John Cena (obviously)
Big Show
Hulk Hogan (ugh)
Kane (when he returns)
RVD (ditto Kane)
HBK (again, tweener)

So, with that said, I think that Cena should drop the belt. As big as I am on Kurt, I really think that Shawn Michaels would be the best bet. While HBK doesn't "need" the belt, he's been positioned so perfectly right now between heel and face that he could convincingly work with ALL of the top guys on the Raw. Having a tweener champion is something they haven't really had the balls to try, but I think a guy the calibre of HBK could pull it off. If not HBK, then I think Kurt is the next best vote - he's on fire right now.

As for Batista, here's who he has to face:
JBL (winding down, thankfully)
Randy Orton
Eddie Guerrero
Christian (if they stop completely jobbing him out)

And for the heels:
Undertaker
Booker T
Chris Benoit
Rey Mysterio

Wow, Smackdown's a little thinner, ya think? Taker doesn't need another main event push, Booker's been a midcarder for too long, Benoit's become king of midcarders, and Rey is unproven as a main eventer but has potential. Eddie and RKO (and Christian though his status in the hierarchy is sketchy) could get some decent matches out of Batista, so I'd have him hang onto the belt for a bit.

You see for me that fued just doesnt need a belt. It could be the fued that everyone is watching just outside the title picture.

Plus, if one of them has the title it kind of limits what you can do since you don't want to make the champion look weak unless you plan on having him drop the belt

I never liked this logic. What the hell is wrong with the champion almost losing to a worthy opponent? That doesn't make him look weak unless he cheats to win. In my opinion that makes the champion look 10 fold better. I hate the idea that the champ has to woop everyones ass convincingly. It's totally uninteresting just like Batista is now and every other squash machine was, Goldberg included. I've had a 99.9% success rate of predicting both of their matches over the years. How interesting is that?

Sorry, I meant as far as pinfalls and submissions since if you have the champ lose by pinfall or submission in any non-title match then you make the champ look weak, although I guess if it is a close match then it might not hurt the champ.
