Happy Anniversary

This past Thursday marked the 100th Anniversary of the World Heavyweight Title in professional wrestling. On May 5, 1905, George Hackenschmidt, the Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion, defeated Tom Jenkins, the American Heavyweight Champion, in two straight falls in Madison Square Garden to become the World Catch-as-Catch Can Heavyweight Champion. This belt is considered to root of both the NWA and World (Raw) Heavyweight Titles.

Wow, and that's why NWA title is considered so prestigous. It's just too bad that for much of the first half of the 20th centruy the NWA title was fractured so the list of who was the champion differs depending on what source you use, and don't say use NWA's official list because the WWE doesn't reconize Antonio Inoki's reign and i'm sure NWA is similar.
Sorry to go off on a tagent, Happy Ann'sy George Hackenschmidt.

Wasn't Inoki's reign all of a couple of days?

Pretty interesting to think of "sports entertainment" as having a lengthy history. Thanks Crock.

Yeah,he held the title for about a week, but that's longer than Kane and Andre the Giants reigns and Yokozuna's first reign. :dead2:

Didn't Abe Lincoln hold a wrestling title at one time?

Anyway, I can't believe David Arquette is a former World Champ and also Vince Russo...fuckin crap. At least when WWE and Vince had himself win the title it made sense during one of the most succesful angles in wrestling history. Arquette won the title because they were trying to promote that shitty ass movie and Russo won it because he was out of ideas by the time WCW hired the guy....morons.

^^^ The only thing I didn't so much like about Vinny Mac getting the World Title (same deal with Shane O'Mac and the Euro Title) is that it's all very well booking yourself to win a title, but don't just then retire as champion without being beaten in the ring as they both did.

But it is their ball and they can do what they like!!
