This is just kind of a test. I see it alot on this board that no one remembers or knows who some of the greats from these two organizations were. How many of you out there watched NWA and remember The Road Warriors, Flair, The Horsemen, Dusty Rhodes, Nikita Koloff all in their heydays? And how many also remember when Taz was a wrestler and his name only had one Z in it, RVD when he was one of the greatest this business has seen, Nova and not Simon Dean, Raven, Tommy Dreamer, Sandman? I'm gonna post this poll just to get a better feel for the people who post on this board.
I watched a ton of ECW....I wasn't alive during most of the NWA days, but that's what video tapes are for. I've seen a ton of old NWA stuff on tape and I gotta say...the wrestling in NWA stomped what WWE was doing at the same time. Flair vs. Garvin, Flair vs. Dusty, Koloff vs. Taylor, Flair vs. Steamboat, Road Warriors vs. The Andersons, Rock and Roll Express vs. Midnight Express, Tully Blanchard vs. Magnum T.A., just some great matches I can remember off the top of my head. and ECW was Fucking INSANE stuff man.
I would have to say my favorite ECW matches were Jerry Lynn vs. RVD. Greatest matches I have ever seen. In NWA you cannot touch Flair/Steamboat at Wrestlewar '89. And the thing that gets me to this day about NWA is that these guys went for an average of 30-45 minutes on any given night. And we know they partied hard. Drugs and excessive amounts of alchohal, and they could still go for as long as they did, and as good as they did, it blows my mind.
I caught the end of ECW when I realised how many wrestlers Vince was stealing. I never watched the NWA but I`ve read up just to have a knowledge. I hated WCW it bored me.

Would that explain the condition of guys like Barry Windham and Michael Hayes who were both pretty much done by their mid 30's??
Interesting point Bulldog, but you have to remember that guys like Sting and the Great Muta were doing these types of matches quite frequently and it didn't seem to effect them. You had just better be in serious shape.
To be fair however, there were a lot more rest holds in those matches than you'd see in a Kurt Angle or Chris Benoit match. The rest holds did make sense though, in that a guy like Arn Anderson would focus all of his attention on eliminating a specific body part.
So I can't really say which style I prefer. I like 35 minute matches with great ring psychology. I like 20 minute matches with tremendous intensity throughout. And I like 15 minute hardcore matches.

On a separate point, why in a 5 minutes WWE Cruiser match do the guys in that division have to spend 3 minutes of it doing rest holds and the rest of the match just brawling (sorry I must make a reminder to self to stop banging on about the Cruiser division at every opportunity)!!
I watched both, but I only saw NWA as a child, and I dont remember much of it. I've always been a huge wrestling fan, but as a kid, WWF was where the "cool" wrestlers were. When I was 7 or 8 years old, I would take Hulk Hogan and the Macho Man over Ric Flair and Arn Anderson any day. But, of course, I was 7 years old at the time.
I actually saw the first ECW PPV, and it blew my mind, but not in a good way. I dont remember much of it, but I do remember thinking "This is the wonderful ECW that I've heard so much about? This looks so amateur". I also distinctly remember the Dudley Boyz, and I was shocked when I heard Buh Buh Ray (as it was spelled in ECW) cursing like a madman. But from then on, I watched periodically, and really got into it the last year and a half of the company. I was gonna go to the last ECW PPV, but money was tight, because i was still in college. In hindsight, i wish i had gone.
ECW also came to my college town a few times, but for some reason I never went.
