| Real Pro Wrestling disses the WWE For those who don't know, RPW is a traditonal/ametur/college type wrestling show that plans to debut on the US cable network Pax Sunday March 27th 4:00 pm/3:00 Central Time. I recently found out about them at my job (full of TVs) so I checked their site out. Here's what they have to say about their orgaization and the WWE. One of the questions that has come up a couple times is the name of our organization - RealProWrestling. Let me explain a couple thing regarding this. Real Pro Wrestling was selected to be our temporary name until the official league formed. However as we got closer to the teams being formed, we could not come up with a better name that also we also were able to trademark as a name and an abbreviation. We could come up with other names but not one that really was head and shoulders above RPW. So the corporate name has become Real Pro Wrestling, Inc. The trademarked product names are RPW and RealProWrestling (all one word.) This distinction is due to legal issues. So although many people think they have better ideas, and maybe they do, legal issues have to be factored in. Some of the other name possibilities are simply not available. RealProWrestling, and therefore RPW, was chosen to help people understand what it is. Just like Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and Pro Golfing Association describe what they are, so to does RPW. There is nothing derogatory meant with this name unless one wants to reads something into it. However, RPW is not surrendering the words “wrestling” or “pro wrestling” to anybody else or any other organization. We are real wrestlers and what these wrestlers are doing is really pro wrestling. Some people like to describe real wrestling as amateur wrestling, but it does not make much sense to call a new pro sports league amateur. The Professional Amateur Wrestling League! That’s ridiculous. There are huge problems with calling real wrestling “amateur” and fake wrestling “professional”. Let's call a spade a spade. Again, the distinction is between staged and real competition, not amateur and pro. The wrestling community - for that matter the whole world - needs to adjust their terminology to reflect this reality. Now there is nothing wrong with theatrical wrestling as entertainment. The Harlem Globetrotters have shown for years that theatrical basketball is fun and okay. Nobody in or out of basketball has a problem with the Globetrotters. We just think the current fake wrestling groups do a very poor job of staging wrestling, have bad acting, and bad plot lines. We also think it is crass. By using the name wrestling, these entertainment corporations give real wrestling a negative image with many people. By not having a real pro wrestling organization to show the other side, people end up with a distorted definition of wrestling. But not only is the wrestling staged in these organizations, we debate whether it is wrestling to begin with. Since when has wrestling ever allowed chairs and punches? That was never allowed in the old pro wrestling. The theatrical wrestling of today is really fake MMA, staged mixed martial arts. Their true competitors are the organizations like UFC and Pride. The WWE should change their name to be World Fighting Entertainment or World Fighting Federation. How about even better - World Fake Fighting. That is more accurate. RPW has been and will continue to be compared to the WWE and theatrical pro wrestling. We don’t care. Wrestling is what we do and we have 4000 years of history to support us. Whether the fake junk “wrestling” on television thrives or tanks is unimportant to us. But what is important to us is to make sure people know that RPW and real wrestlers are night and day different from the theatrical wrestling of the WWE. This might be obvious to some people, but after years of talking with people, there is a lot of confusion. Even some top television executives didn’t know the difference. Just like Special Op soldiers don’t want to be identified with the Rambo image, so too do we real wrestlers not want to be thought of as steroid freaks of WWE injustice. This really is not the WWE’s fault because real wrestling failed to organize, grow, and educate. The WWE has been winning the battle over the terms “wrestling” and “pro wrestling” by default. Whether this town is big enough for the two of us remains to be seen. The only thing RPW cares about is that real wrestling thrives. What name we do it under doesn’t matter. A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet. Story By Staff Writer, RPW Home Office Thoughts? | ||||||||||||||
