It can be argued that houshold names are what brought WWE ratings in the war of the 90's. Probably Fact. The storylines were great with Rock and Austin. But does anyone else remember what was going on with the mid-card during that point? No, you probably didn't care.
The funny thing about today's wrestling is that the overall product is actually better but does not generate near the ratings they once did. How many good matches were there on a given week back then? Probably none. But people were so involved with the characters it didn't matter. If you look at this year's Wrestlemania the card could be potentially better in-ring wise than a lot of Wrestlemanias past, but won't come near the PPV buys.
To me when you have these household names the overall product suffers, but people like it more that way.
I guess you really can't replace The Rock or Stone Cold no matter how good the actual "wrestling" is.
I clicked on this expecting a thread on household cleaners.
