WWE seems to have a lot of guys who could and should be main eventers, but they already have a good number of main eventers between the two brands, so it's a tough call to say who will get the nod to move up in the crowded ranks at the top. Regardless, here are the midcard/uppercard guys I would like to see get a run at the top:
Rey Mysterio: the only cruiserweight who legitimately has a chance of main eventing in WWE. I think that, especially with how he's been booked over Eddie lately, WWE may consider having him go for the belt at some point later this year. Rey consistently delivers, the fans love him, and I think it'd be refreshing to see a 5'5", 175# masked man get a shot at the belt.
Christian: I think that Christian should go the way of JBL and hire an "image consultant" to help groom him for the next level. The first thing he'd need to do to get a chance to have a main event run is to bulk up just a little bit - maybe another 5-10 pounds. The second thing that would help distinguish the "old" Christian from "main event" Christian is to start going by his old name, Christian Cage. That just sounds more like a main event-guy name, whereas Christian by itself sounds like half of a tag team (ahem, Edge). Otherwise, he is one of my favorite guys in wrestling today - a fantastic heel who is a solid worker. I'd love to see him move up.
Rob Conway: This would be way, way down the road (at least 2-3 years), but I think that he could go the way of Sgt. Slaughter, and pull a "I want my country back" face turn. He's a good worker, decent on the mic, and has a good look to him. I see him at least getting a run with the I-C title if not vying for the big belt.
Matt Hardy: The king of career suicide. The former highlight of Smackdown turned Raw lackey. He was one of the best things going on Smackdown before he moved to Raw to be with Lita. Sure, in his personal life, he's probably happier getting to travel with his girlfriend than being a top guy on the other brand, but if they could find a way to get him both, that'd rock.
Chris Jericho: My favorite (if it wasn't obvious). His heel main event run was OK, but overshadowed by the fallout of the HHH/Steph storyline. I'd like to see him get another run with the World title. I know that WWE won't make him a franchise guy (e.g. long-standing face main eventer), but he's a fantastic worker, the best mic guy WWE has right now, and over with the fan. I believe that's called a
draw, folks.
Rob Van Dam: Dead horse being beaten here. RVD rules. 'Nuff said.
