Lets go Retro, Simon looks back at WWF/WCW Invasion PPV

I found this to be a very interesting PPV. Not only was it the highlight of the worst storyline in the history of wrestling, but I found it interesting some of the matches that we saw. Perhaps looking back, it was very easy to understand why this PPV and angle flopped big time.

Match 1. Edge and Christian vs. Lance Storm and Mike Awesome

I instantly got a chuckle when Christian came out with Edge's KOTR trophy. Christian still has the long hair and carries the match for both teams primarly. Finish comes when Awesome has Edge up for a Razors Edge and Christian spears Awesome sending Edge crashing down on Awesome for the pin and win.

Out of the people involved in match, Awesome and Storm are no longer on the WWE roster. Mike Awesome showed me nothing in this match.

Match 2. The APA vs. Sean OHaire and Afro Palumbo.

APA wins with a Clothesline from Hell via your current WWE Champion JBL. This was a pretty fast paced match with lots of action. I spent the entire match watching OHaire and was still wondering why he isnt employed with the WWE. There must be something behind that. Either way, Ohaire was impressive and Palumbo bored me to tears.

Out of the people involved in the match, Only JBL survived. Crowd was major hot for the APA. Also Ohaire and Palumbo were Tag Champs at the time.

Match 3 X-Pac vs. Kidman

Kidman gets a pep talk from Shane, Steph and Heyman. Pac is the light heavyweight champ and Kidman is the Cruiserweight champion. Kidman only appears to be over because "XPac sucks". Why for the love of god doesnt Kidman still wear the White tanktop and jeans? Bronco Buster Blocked in the nuts and Kidman executes a perfect SSPress to get the win for WCW

Out of the people involved in this match, one is unemployed and the other is never seen on WWE TV.

Pre Match 4. DDP gives a pep talk to Shane, Steph and Heyman. Uuuugh, then we switch over to Torrie and Stacy who say that The Hardys want their bodies. Torrie then slaps Stacys ass and walk off camera. TERRIBLE acting.

Match 4 Raven vs. Commissioner William Regal

See above with Ohaire. Everybody seems to really like Raven, yet he is on his 4th major promotion. He must have other issues we dont know about. Regal is schooling him in this matchup. LOTS AND LOTS of near falls in this matchup. Tazz comes out and assists Raven. Raven hits a really weak Raven Effect for the win.

Once again, one of these guys are not in the WWE anymore. Check your local TNA listings.

Pre Match 5. Masked Silent Kane and American Badass Undertaker w/Sarah get ANOTHER pep talk from Vince.

Match 5 Albert/Big Show/The One Billy Gunn vs. Sean Stasiak/Chris Kanyon and Hugh Morris.

Holy crap, talk about a shitfest. When watching this is is apparent that Big Show has gotten quite a bit bigger since this show. This match was an absolute disaster. Hugh Morris actually pins Billy Gunn for the win, but then all WCW are quickly dispatched by The Big Show.

Of the wrestlers in this match, Only Big Show is still actively wrestling in the WWE. Hugh Morris I believe does Sunday Night Heat Announcing.

Pre Match 6 Another pep talk by Shane for the mini dreds Booker T. Regal then gives (japanese speaking only) Tajiri a pep talk which is mildly amusing.

Match 6 Tazz vs. Tajiri.

This fued stems from Tajiri not joining the ECW posee. As much as I LOVE Tazz as a colour guy, he just wasnt big enough for the WWE. He literally barely makes it over the top rope heightwise. On a side note, I just noticed the place looks sold out. Green Mist takes out Tazz for the pinfall. Boring ass match

Pre Match 7 Matt Hardy pep talks Jeff but is blasted with a steel chair by RVD. Hardcore Holly signs autographs for fans at WWF New York.

Match 7 RVD vs. Hardcore Champion Jeff Hardy.

Its weird hearing a RVD entrance without "One of a kind!". Jeff Hardy doesnt look hooked on crank in this match. Really good match so far. Both men are going all out. Jeff Hardy falls off a 20 foot ladder to the floor below. Ouch. 5 star Frog Splash on Hardy for the win and new champ. GREAT MATCH.

Pre Match 8. Holy shit, how many matches are there? Pep talk by Vince on Angle with hair. Better yet? How many friggin pep talks are there gonna be. Oh its true, its damn true.

Match 8 Bra and Panties. Trish and Torrie vs. Trish and Lita. Pretty cool seeing that Lita and Trish didnt get along even then (storyline wise) It all seems to stem from the WCW girls having crushes on the Hardys. Mick Foley is the Referee. Lita and Trish win. Both Torrie and Stacy are covering their bodies like they have never taken their clothes off in the ring before. Gay match.

I am happy to say that ALL FOUR GIRLS are still employed.

Main event Steph, Heyman and Shane come down to the ring first. Then Vince.

Dudleys/Rhyno/DDP vs. Kane/Taker/Austin/Y2J. Boy this match was pretty one sided talent wise. Taker lays out everybody including Little Naitch (the referee).........Ooooooh yeah, Austin turns on Angle and Vince and joins Team WCW. Whatever.

This concludes my review of a 4 year old PPV. Hope you enjoyed

It's about time......now bring on his next fued....

I actually got to go to Gund Arena to see this ppv as at the time I thought it would be the most historic moment in the history of professional wrestling. So much for that.lol

Anyway, it was a pretty average ppv with the exception of RVD and Jeff Hardy match as the crowd was huge into RVD. It was pretty comical that Van Damm was supposed to be playing the heel since he started taking bows after every high spot he did, but the crowd loved it. Hardy flying off the stage after taking a Vandamminator looked brutal.

*Another funny moment was after the womens match Trish almost fell off the stage since there was basically a Pit in the middle of the ramp(The one Jeff got tossed into ealier) and only by Lita grabbing her arm did Trish not take what would have probably been a pretty serious accident.

*main event was ok but nothing steller as everyone saw the whole Austin heel turn coming from a mile away. My only hope was that the Rock was going to return early from shooting the Mummy Returns and bring the house down. Unfortunetelly he did not and I went home dissapointed. It was still worth it and it was better then any of these one brand ppv's we have been seeing lately. It was worth seeing for the Rob and Jeff match plus I agree with you Simon Christian continuing to lug Edge's King of the Ring trophy around was pretty good comedy.

I just bought this on DVD, pretty much just to have Hardy/RVD. And I agree that I have no idea why O'haire doesn't have a job, he has the look, the skills, and had a good Non PC character. Yet there he goes, out on that boat thats floating away.

I actually enjoyed this ppv and I also own it on DVD.

I liked RVD vs. Hardy and I liked the final match.

The one thing that bothered me about the Invasion angle was that they didn't bring in all the WCW guys (main eventers) right away or for some of them never.

Wouldn't the angle have been a lot more effective if Goldberg, Flair, Sting, Steiner, Hogan, Hall, and Nash were involved from the start? The real WCW guys.

I remember liking this PPV when i watched it back in the day. Especially the RVD-Hardy match

The worst thing about the entire angle was how they made DDP a total bitch. DDP was ther one legitimate star they brought in, and he was losing matches to the Undertaker's wife!!!

I was at KOTR 2001, which had the Undertaker-DDP "confrontation". It wasnt an actual match, but i remember everyone in the crowd going wild in anticipation because it was the first time a WCW guy and a WWF/E guy were gonna go head-to-head. Then, Taker just beat on DDP for 5 excruciatingly long minutes and DDP ran away. Very disappointing

didn't that same PPV have the Shane McMahon vs. Kurt Angle Street Fight? I loved that match!

And yeah DDP was made to look like shit...but all the WCW guys they had were made to look bad. Booker T was never made out to be as good as Austin or Angle even when he was carrying the World Title and U.S. Title at the same time.

Yup...awesome match. That alone was worth the price of admission.

Yeah, I can't wait to see Kurt and HBK go at it....It will be the first quality opponent that Angle has faced in quite some time (I like JBL, but he's crap in the ring), probably since Eddie Guerrero...Should be one hell of a match.

I also would have been happy just to see that street fight from 2001...classic.

damn, Now I'm going off topic....Anyway, The Invasion angle was poorly done.

Then Kurt kept tossing Shane into the glass that wouldnt break. He kept landing on the back of his neck. That really was one of the best matches I have seen in a long time.

Capped off with an Angle Slam off the top rope.

Shane got a well-deserved standing O while walking to the back
