I recall all his fueds during his one-year run as WWE champ. Hart, HBK, Sid, Mabel, Bulldog. At the time he seemed to be a good choice to head up the "new generation". Looking back now, he was a pretty weak champ. I would compare him to JBL's reign as champ.

Yeah, but unlike JBL, there was an actual excitement at the time over him.

That's probably because we were only kids at the time. Everything seemed better back then. WWE was still targeted at kids, and he was over with them. JBL is targeted at adults (as is WWE now), with little success.

I wouldn't say Orton today compares to Hall before he left WWF. Hall's popularity was pretty natural while Orton's is rather manufactured

Yeah, I would agree with that.

I guess I was more getting at the sense of them being future stars.

If Hall walked out there and dressed like the hurricane he wouldn't be very popular now would he? His caracter helped him get over so he was just as manufactured as Orton. Orton has a gimmick and so did Hall.

True.

But Ortons gimmick had to be sold to us and shoved down our throats before anything happened.

WWE knew that they wanted to make Orton into a huge star so they did what they had to do.

Hall on the other hand pretty much just fell into it by being popular.

I like Carlito probably for the same reason as I liked Razor Ramon, when he first debuted with WWE. I'm a sucker for that "wanna be cool?" gimmick. I just so want to be cool

Once Hall dropped the Razor gimmick I lost interest in him fast, as did most people.
