Outlasting The Gimmick

We all know the gimmick that just makes us cringe, for me the first night we were introduced to Eugene I think I almost gave up on wrestling, or (keeping it recent) the divas were asked to sex up Kamala. But what about those who escape from the awful gimmicks? Batisita’s previous occupation was carring D-Von’s Collection box, now he’s the future of Evolution. Who has the best shot to beat the 2-D ceiling and rise up? Is there any hope for Simon Dean? Will the Hurricane be able to blow us away, or will he sputter out?

It's all about finding the right gimmick. John Cena was just another loser until he became John Cena - the rapper. JBL is another good example of this, giving up the pointless APA gimmick and becoming the number one heel on Smackdown. I don't think The Hurricane will ever get over with the fans, no matter what his gimmick is.

This reminds me of when I started watching the WWF again in late 99. My re-introduction to wrestling went sorta like this:

"Hey, who's the champion right now"
"HHH"
"Who?"
"He used to go as Hunter Hearst Helmsley"
"Wait, you mean the guy who came out as a stuck-up snob from Connecticut and never won any matches?"
"Yeah"
"WHAT....THE HELL....IS THAT?!?!?!?!?!"

"Ok, so who was the champion before him?"
"Mankind"
"The same Mankind who wore a stupid mask, knew only two moves, pulled his hair out and only spoke about how crazy he is?"
"Yeah"
"WHAT....THE HELL...IS THAT?!?!?!?!"

"Wait, so who else is big right now?"
"Well, there's Stone Cold Steve Austin"
"You mean the pretty boy from WCW with the long blond hair?"
"Yeah"
"OK, this sucks, I'm going back to WCW. I heard there's gonna be an awesome Goldberg-Kevin Nash match tonight!!! NWO 4 Life!!!!!"

Ya If Nova would drop the lame ass Simon Dean thing and go back to being Nova he would be huge. He was one of the most breath taking wrestlers I have ever seen in action when he worked ECW.

Well he hasn't wrestled yet so maybe he still is? I don't think his gimmick would somehow lessen his wrestling skills........

I actually like his gimmick. I just hope they evolve him in time, like they did with Kurt Angle.

No I saw Nova at a house show they have reduced his moveset to doing pushups and squats and some armdrags. They played him in the match as a total joke character and the Ryno gored him. This guy can do the swanton better than anyone in the business and hes also invented several moves. and I had to watch him do armdrags pushups and squats I was saddened to see such a great athlete reduced to a gimmicky joke character.

Hey what did you expect this is the WWE?!? That might be a generalization but I've seen it more times than not. Just be glad for him that he'll be pulling in a decent paycheck for at least a couple months. They should bring in Roadkill and see if his gimmick gets over.

I loved the "Angry Amish Chicken-Plucker"

My friend always talks about Roadkill's ECW debut, and how Joey Styles yelled out "Its the Amish-taker!!!!"

God, I miss ECW

And, speaking of Nova, he was fantastic in the ring in ECW. Him and RVD were two of my favorites. I'm afraid that he'll have to tone it down just like RVD did. At least they're giving him a gimmick. I'd almost rather people debut with bad gimmicks instead of coming out to their real names and no character
