Narc mentioned in another thread the lack of tag teams in the WWE and the discussion quickly turned to development, basically saying that no matter how many people you put together they still need direction.
Well, this leads me to my next point. Should the wrestlers do more to give the writers some direction for them? If you read SCSA's book you will know that Austin and Pillman were originally in the WCW as just two joe blow wrestlers together that happened to have the same color blonde hair. They were stuck in a rut going nowhere when they both decided to turn it up a notch.
They started growing the hair longer, wearing matching outfits and acting all outragous with the fans. They dubbed themselves the Hollywood Blondes. Bingo, instant gimmick.
Although WCW management (as we all know) didnt see much potential in the Pillman/Austin HB's gimmick so it was soon put on ice. Even though the fans were eating it up. That part is WCW's fault 100%, but at least Austin and Pillman tried.
Nowadays you have so many generic wrestlers using their real names, tagging with some other guy that uses his real name (example Kidman and London. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) Now I have always been a big Kidman fan, but when he comes out with London and the tag belts I think "They can't be serious with these two as champs" They just don't look legit.
Remember when Austin and Rocky Mavia were feuding over the IC belt back in like 99? That was some classic stuff, mostly done by them. Sure the writers came up with the concepts of the fued. But the fued was completly fueled by Austin and The Rock.
Soooooooo, should wrestlers take more control of their character even if the writers are giving them nothing? Does it go against the backstage politics. Or should a wrestler do whatever it takes to grab the spotlight? I will go with the ladder.
In my opinion, you have to give the writers SOMETHING. It shouldnt be completely up to them. Most good ideas are stolen and improved with a new outlook, (like this thread lol)
