That dream shattering moment..

As a lifelong wrestling fan.. there was a time when i thought it was real. I sat through the mockings of my father and relatives and still firmly believed it was the real thing. That was until 1989 when I saw an episode of 'The Main Event'. It was the episode which saw the mega powers break up. Anyway, After Savage beat up Hogan in the facility room.. hogan then went on a rampage looking for the Macho Man.. Hogan was seen yelling and screaming.. then as per usual, the 'Titan Sports' credits appeared at the bottom of the screen signifying the end of the show. But before the cameras faded to black, a voice from behind then camera said something on the lines of "And cut! That was excellent!". That moment I knew the sport I loved was no longer what I thought it was.

When was your turning point as a wrestling fan? and whendid you discover the dirty secret?

I actually just had someone tell me that when i was about 6 or 7 then i watched a match and realized it for myself. It wasn't earth shattering by any means. I guess I just had a problem when people would say "You know its fake." and i would say of course it is, these guys would be dead if the stuff they did was real. and you know what? people still say that to me even though its a very well known fact. Then I say to them that these guys train very hard they choreograph their matches to perfection and they are on the road all but about 2 weeks out of the year and that usually shuts them up.

It was 1991 right after the whole steriod scandal first broke. I believe Vince McMahon wrote an article saying that indeed the WWF was entertainment, and that matches were "scripted" and "coreographed." I was stunned, not so much that the matches were coreographed or scripted, because as I got older (I was 12 in 1991), I noticed that not all of the punches connected, and when you would go to live events, especially tapings of WWF Superstars, where they would film for 3 hours, you'd see guys wrestle 3 times a night. If it was real, it'd be near impossible to do tha. But I was shocked that Vince would publicy admit it. I thought wrestling was done, and for a few years it was close, as the steroid issue nearly brought down professional wrestling.
