What's the deal with The Rock?

Ok I have lost tough with the WWE the last couple of years and am just getting back into it, I have run a search on the boards to piece together the situation regarding Dwayne, but it's not too clear. Obviously his does his films and stuff, but what's the situation with the WWE, is he under a contract, is he coming back, will he ever be a full-time member of the roster again or are those days gone? It doesn't quite make sense to me, in the great scheme of things he is a young guy, the films could wait a bit, the wrestling won't. I saw a thread with people talking about him 'paying his dues'. Anyone who says he hasn't does him a huge dis-service. He appreciates wrestling, has jobbed to anyone he has been told to, surrendered belts, put people over, raised the profile of other wrestlers by getting in the ring with them, plus he started from the bottom. I don't care what anyone says, if you start at the bottom and work your way to the top you sure as hell deserve it. Besides, the income he has brought to the company has been huge and the effect of that can't be denied. He is someone who has total respect for the business and the fact it is a work. A consumate pro and an all-time legend. Only a fool would doubt that.

Cheers guys.

His contract expires sometime this summer (I think its June), im not sure what kind of contract (if any) Vince is gonna offer him to stay with the company. The Rock owns the copyright to his name and is pretty much done with wrestling, but he does say that he would love to come back for a few special apperances in a year (like he did at WrestleMania this year). He still has a few film obligations to fill (the latest i've heard is that he's due to film a big screen version of Johnny Bravo, and he's just finished filming the sequel to Get Shorty, entitled Be Cool) and if they keep rolling in, he'll take them.

I personally don't think we'll see the Rock in a full-time capacity in WWE ever again.

Thanks for the reply, a shame that, having DJ around, love or loathe him, just makes everything that little bit more exciting imho. I have to say I'm surprised he has turned his back on the wrestling pretty much, I sure hope he does become a full-time roster member again one day but like you have a feeling he is too caught up in the Hollywood thing now.

I didn't see WM obviously, what was his involvement and was he left with a potential future angle should he return?

I don't believe he has turned his back on anything. Sure he may very well still love wresling but he sure is making a lot more money making movies and I am sure he has more freedom to raise his kids and be with his wife then he did when in the WWE. Not to mention he is becoming more respected and popular by making these movies. He hasn't forgotten wrestling but it also doesn't mean he has to be invoved with it for the rest of his life either.

Its simple economics. I think he'd be borderline insane to not take the money for the movies that he's doing in favour of wrestling.

He does lots of things at once. He:

1) Earns a shedload of cash
2) Broadens the WWE brand by pushing it into the Hollywood domain (everyone associates Rock with WWE) and that keeps Vince happy.
3) Makes his involvement truly special in an angle.
4) Keeps options open so that he can return if he feels that he wants to, and his return keeps his character (which was majorly stale at the time he left) to be fresh and interesting.

It makes sense.
