No, I don't miss WCW. I couldn't wait until the day when WWE over-powered them and turned their headquarters into a Starbucks. Of course, I was a much bigger WWE mark at that time than I currently am. I agree that they need some form of competition in order to get back on track again.
i watched wcw to the bitter end. the product sucked, but i just couldnt get enough wrestling. i dont really miss it though. but it was nice to have the option of watching the first hour of nitro before raw came on, or watching thunder on wednesday if i wasnt doing anything
I think that WWE got what was salvageable out of WCW, so I don't miss it at all. WCW was plagued at the end. The big names didn't have to (and therefore didn't) work very much. The guys who went out there and worked frequently couldn't draw all that well, or were so green that the quality dropped immensely. They had run it into the ground, and I don't think that anything that WWE could have done would have saved it. Think about it: they'd have to produce 8 hours of primary programming (including writing storylines, etc.) every week, and they can't consistently do 4 hours a week now. They made the right choice: they killed it off and moved on.
I guess I miss the competition more than WCW itself. I just miss the days of playing 'what if' in terms of wrestlers jumping ship. Plus, it used to be that WWE would try harder for ratings, try to actually put on a better show. They have had thier ups and downs, but I think we are all waiting for another 'golden age' and its looking less and less likely. Maybe a few more years.
Plus when WWE took over WCW I wish they had done more with it or just done nothing. I always felt that the Invasion angle was just Vinnie Mac's final showing that the WCW was a weaker product.
Oh yeah, remember that very first week when WWE tried to give WCW it's own time slot on RAW? They had the WCW set, announcers, and Buff Bagwell's only RAW appearence ever I think. Can't remember who he worked a match against...some WCW guy anyways.
I think WWE is trying to re-create the days of competition by using the brand extension. Just like when guys left WCW and showed up on WWE the next week. Although it's not the same shock if we were to see Brock jump ship and go to RAW, for example. What WWE really needs (as we all know) is some indepentent competition. NWA-TNA is the closest thing to that right now.
and about that competition/jumping ship thing, here's a reason why i miss WCW...
me and my friend were watching the best of raw vol. 2 dvd, and we watched Jericho's debut and commented on how awesome it was. then i mentioned that that can never happen again, because there is no "WCW" or other big promotion for someone to build up a following and a fan base and then show up out of nowhere on RAW. NWA:TNA doesnt qualify yet...especially since almost all their stars are former WWE wrestlers
I've always liked WCW, even when it was going down the tubes completely.
For me, WCW's last few years in comparison to WWE at that time was better. I know many would disagree, but I personally thought WWE was well on their way towards the downturn when WCW was dying out completely.
WCW was a nice alternative even though they weren't doing something which was completely entertaining. At least I could still watch wrestling, get involved without getting bored, and be semi-entertained by the constant "newness" that they were under.
WWE should've never had the brand extension. They should've killed Smackdown and made it Nitro or Thunder and went from there.
This way they could've had a seperate WCW Title and give off a more real appearance that there was an actual seperation. I mean, does anyone really buy it right now?
I also think this would've allowed WWE to experiment more and try to become more competitive within themselves. WCW could've continued to be more of a shoot promotion, while WWE could've continued to be more of an entertainment company.
