But surely a great champion is somebody who can sucessfully defend it time after time rather than losing it in his first PPV defence

A great Champion in boxing or in UFC is someone who has a long title run.

A great Champion in WWE is someone who can help with ratings.

^ Coudln't have put it any better myself.

Sure it's great to have a long run, but after all what is it? One run. One year or so of main eventing, you lose, then your gone, out of the picture.
*cough* JBL.

Change = Surprise = Ratings.

I would MUCH rather see one of my favorites be in the title picture for years and years just fighting over or for the championship. It leads to the element of suspense. "Will he lose it this time? When will he get it back? Damn, he lost it again! Can't wait for the rematch!!!"

Example: The Egde/Cena feud. Much greater than a non draw like JBL when you know he will not lose the match, and it's not anticipating his main events, just the hope he loses it "THIS TIME PLEASE".

Remember the Spyda, dude ..
