I am not saying that is boring. It gets boring for someone to be a heel for at least 4 or 5 years. That also applies as someone being a face such as HBK has been a face for 7 years.
There is no way you can lay that down as a general rule. It depends entirely on the wrestler in question and the circumstances of the time. You can easily remain entertaining over an extended period of time without a big heel or face turn.

Wow. If that isn't the worst rule of all time, I don't know what is. Ricky Steamboat was a face for his entire career and he was one of the most exciting wrestlers of all time.

Randy Orton is destined to be a heel. His father; Bob Orton Jr. was a heel for most of his career as was his grandfather Bob Orton Sr. I would like to say that they were pretty successful and were remembered for their heel runs over their face runs.
He'd be a much more boring face I'd say. It isn't all the booking that makes him boring currently, but I still think he is a natural heel and seems comfortable in that role. He's not the best heel in the company but he's cleary up there. I really don't see how he would make a good face. He failed first time around.
Edge is going face, and he needed a face turn the most out of all the top level heels.
Orton would be a great heel if he wasn't ALWAYS booked against the same guys.
That's why the Age of Orton was a good reign. The one he just had had the same potential, but he was, as you said, always against either HHH or Cena.
