This is my biggest gripe with him. I get a cold calculating character but numerous headlocks and just a slow methodical pace can get dull. When he hits a few quicker moves it's always entertaining.
I should say, I like the style with guys like Bourne/Primo when he's actually a big man in the match. But with guys like HHH, it's like the two slowest wrestlers that aren't giants going at it as if they were.

I'd say the cocky asshole gimmick and the remorseless, sadistic "viper" gimmick are two very different things, so he's hardly been playing the same character his whole career.
So you never saw a difference between him taking out old men and women in 2005 to him taking out old people and women in 2009?

I agree that Orton has been held back by the PG rating, but I also think he should have been able to adapt his game to play within the rules. While he seemingly has, I gotta agree with Tommy here. Homeboy is just so uninteresting.
He was so much better as the Legend Killer and cocky SOB than he is the evil eyed, silent dickhead he portrays now.
I'm not so sure his character isn't that far off from his real life persona either.

I just don't get the slow approach for Orton. He's very athletic and should be able to work faster. And I won't deny that the approach does work at times. But like you say, it just makes for a dull match at other times.
Always kinda liked Orton, but there has been often been something "off" when watching him work in the ring. Someone pointed out that he's basically like watching a big 80s heavyweight and it clicked. Its a bit too much like watching someone like The Barb work.
I almost wonder sometimes if the "stalking, methodical" aspect of his character was added to justify his approach in the ring and make it "work"...

I would share the view that Orton is not looking the way he used to since he took this gimmick. He was very calculating and struck when the iron was hot so to speak and his matches were of some decent speed and interest. At the moment he has been in tag matches a lot and his one on one's have either gone so long and slowly or been interferred by Legacy. I think his overall look needs an overhaul and his boring and painfully slow promos need re-thinking.

Randy Orton has proved that he can be entertaining. But for some reason WWE has held him back. He's supposed to be a badass heel that WINS matches. Not a guy that never wins and when he does it's via cheating. WWE basically have Edge and Orton's match finished switched. Orton should be the guy winning by a little dirty tactics then his finisher. Edge should be the one smacking refs in the face.
