From what I hear, Vince told Dr D not to let Stossel make wrestling look bad. So the whole slap was McMahon's idea.
Doesn't really matter much though, from all accounts Schultz was a real asshole.
I will say this happened at the worst possible time for Schultz. The WWF was right in the middle of working with MTV and Wrestlemania was just a few months away. At the time, Shultz was one of their bigger stars. Who knows how big of a star he could have been had this never happened.
