Lance Storm on ROH, TNA, WWE, UFC

Quote:
By: Lance Storm
The Fight Network

This week rather than a look back at 2007 I thought I would take a look ahead, and talk about what I would like to see in 2008…sort of a Lance Storm 2008 wish list, if you will.

ROH: I would love to see ROH land some form of regular TV deal. I just started getting the Fight Network at the tail end of last year and they air an hour of ROH programming each week. The shows appear to just be random DVD match selections, but the stuff is great. I also saw my first ROH PPV this year (Man Up), which was fantastic so the idea of getting to follow the up to date product and follow the PPV build would be tremendous. ROH, for me, is the true WWE alternative programming so I would love to see it get a regular up to date TV program. ROH needs to be exposed to a much bigger market because their product is very good.

TNA: I’m not going to bother wishing for a booking or announcing change in 2008 because that seems to be a futile wish and a subject that has been done to death. What I’d most like to see apart from that in TNA is the return of “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles. The AJ Styles that I saw on Impact this week was the biggest idiot loser in this business’s history, and I’d like the return of the guy that once headlined this company as World Champion. Why anyone would take such a uniquely gifted and talented performer and turn him into the biggest Jack Ass in wrestling history is beyond me. Remember the TNA review show they did on Monday that one time RAW was pre-empted? They declared the 3-way match with AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels, and Samoa Joe the greatest match in TNA history. I want that AJ Styles back… actually I’d like that Christopher Daniels and that Samoa Joe back too, but that may be asking too much. AJ is now a Jack Ass, Daniels has been “fired”, and Samoa Joe is now a big whiner…ah TNA.

WWE: There are a few things I’d like to see in 2008 from WWE, the first being the immediate dropping of the Hornswaggle McMahon angle. I am so completely tired of this angle. It produced a nice laugh at Vince’s expense when it was first revealed and managed to somehow turn Finlay baby face, but I can’t see what else this program can produce, apart from a ton of bad matches and poor ratings. The other thing I’d love to see in 2008 is the immediate baby face turn and push of Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin is a lot like AJ Styles in that he is a uniquely gifted athlete that can do things no other performer can do. When Shelton was first moved to RAW and given that brief pushing beating HHH he was amazing, not to mention that awesome match he had on RAW with HBK. Remember the springboard into the super kick finish? That was awesome. I would also like to see Santino Marella made into a full time manager. I have no interest in seeing this guy in matches on a regular basis but I’d be more than happy to hear him cut promos every week. Santino is one of the most entertaining promos WWE has produced in years, maybe decades, and needs to be a regular part of the show but, as I said before, I have no interest in seeing this guy wrestle.

UFC: Above all else I want to see the end of the string of upsets that plagued UFC in 2007. One or two surprise wins can be good for business but when they happen all the time they do more harm than good. If no one wins consistently and every match is a coin toss, no one becomes a star, and it is very hard to create big matches for PPV. I know this business is a shoot and UFC has no control over this but this is a wish list and that is what I wish for. To start a more consistent year I’d love to see Brock Lesnar excel in UFC. His UFC debut in February will like be the first UFC PPV I order and if he can start a dominant win streak Brock Lesnar could become UFC’s next big thing, and that would make me very happy.
Storm makes some great points here.

I agree pretty strongly with him on AJ in TNA. He's becoming such a joke character. It might have been pretty amusing for a while at the start when it showed he had another side to him but I'd much rather have him pulling out fantastic matches which he just doesn't seem to do anymore.

Marella as a manager might be a sensible move for the WWE as he really isn't up to much in the ring but everyone loves this guy on the mic. At the moment all he's doing is cutting fantastic promos and then getting squashed but hooking him up with the right guy could really help get the other guy some heel heat. I know I saw people debating Lashley should turn heel and get a manager, I'm not sure if they'd really work so great though as Lashley to be a more serious heel character but I'm sure there's someone out there he could do a good job with.

The only thing I disagree with is Shelton. I still think he's great in the ring, even if he hasn't had a chance to show it for the last year (I've rarely seen him on ECW so perhaps he does get the chance again now). But I personally feel he's much better as a heel due to him being poor on the stick. Infact perhaps him and Marella could do well together as manager/client...?

Re: Lance Storm on ROH, TNA, WWE, UFC

Agreed on most of Lance's points, particularly the AJ one......just because they've turned you into a character and you're getting more "TV time", it's not necessarily a good thing!

As for Shelton, yes I do prefer him as a face also.....quite possibly because he can get the crowd going better with his "moveset". As a heel he needs a manager more than Mr Kennedy needs a "red alert" sign to go off near him every time he goes to open his mouth in public.

Loved Storms thought on Shelton Benjamin and Santino Marella.

This guy seems to really understand the business and what would work and what wouldn't.

I hope these get posted as often as he writes them because they are really good reads.

On a side note, Lance Storm is ALL OVER Jericho's book. I had no idea just how close of friends they were until reading it.

Again talking out of his ass. AJ asked for this to be his gimmick, TNA werent sure but let him try it out, he wants to play the goofey heel so that he can learn a new style.

The guy's not talking out of his ass at all! Who cares if AJ asked to play the role? It doesn't mean he has to play the role! He's much better in a face role as he puts on much better matches which fans can get much more into and AJ puts much more emotion into matches when he's a face. And that means better business for TNA so whether AJ wants to play this role or not, TNA should do what's better for business.

Re: Lance Storm on ROH, TNA, WWE, UFC

As a face he has no confidance on the mic at all. This gimmick has given him confidance. So it is best for bussiness but Mr. Storm seems to think he knows everything.

Re: Lance Storm on ROH, TNA, WWE, UFC

He was definitely not as good on the mic as a face but he could get the job done and as I said at the start, the goofy heel thing was alright but stop it now. Let him use this new-found confidence in the face role. Or make him a more serious heel, anything but this gimmick at the moment.

You say it's giving him new found confidence. Who cares when it's taking away all his credibility? It's making him look like a joke. He's nothing more than a sidekick now, whatever happened the 3 time World Champion? This role's doing nothing put pushing him down the card.

Another thing I'd like to see in 2008, I know Storm didn't mention it in this column but he did in a previous one. The end of this Team 3D, X Division crap. Whatever happened the 30 day defence clause anyways?

And I think even you'd agree that Joe needs to main event Daren.

Why Russo still has a job is beyond me.

Re: Lance Storm on ROH, TNA, WWE, UFC

How is it better for business if most people want to see him back to his "Phenominal" days? What's better for business is what the fans want..it's all about pleasing your customers. Even if AJ doesn't feel as confident on the mic as a face, if people love him and it brings in more viewers, that's all that matters to management in the end.

AJ was in the X-Division doing the same old same old, then he changed to the gimmick that he came up with, he got a tag title run out of it, he's in the main event picture, he's in a stable with the world champion, so yeah, it's done nothing but pushing him down the card.

I was expecting that to end at Final Resolution but Devon still has the belt so now i don't know. The next step would be a cage match, coming up to Lockdown TNA hardly use the cage. Only problem being Lockdown isnt until April. I do however want it to end soon as it has run it course. It was great when it started but now, it's just good. I'm now thinking Lethal vs Devine for the title at Against All Odd's & 3D vs MCMG.

Why wouldent i agree? WHat happened with Joe was so many people were in or around the main event that some had to be dropped down a little, Joe was unfortunatly one of them.

His story line's are good, he just doesnt know how to write how it happens. If he just says what happens & someone else books it, it would turn out much better.

Shelton still can't cut a promo in the ring. And that ECW pre-shot promo was not that good either. The guys is an amazing athlete, and hopefully he grow with his mike skills.

THe the UFC, I thought it was great that there were so many upsets. It lets the under guys know that at anytime, they can beat someone else. Also, you have better odds in Vegas.
