| This has the potential to be HUGE if WWE doesn't botch it like they did the last time (speaking of the Invasion angle, of course). In order for this to be successful, I think WWE should book it like this:
Have RVD cash in the MITB at One Night Stand against John Cena. Have him defeat Cena and then trash the spinner belt - only to have Paul Heyman come down to the ring with the ECW World Title to be presented to Van Dam. Instant credibility for the ECW belt.
The next night on Raw, the new Invasion would kick off, with WWE guys defecting to the new ECW stable. The same thing would happen on Smackdown that week. The ECW stable would disregard WWE's brands and have the same guys invade and recruit on each show.
The following Monday on Raw, Vince would open up the show and state that, in order to combat this ECW faction, WWE needs to be a unified front. The first step for this would be to recombine the Raw and Smackdown brands into one show. Second, since RVD technically forfeited his championship, John Cena is named WWE Champion again, HOWEVER, since there would now be two sets of champions in WWE, matches to unify the World & WWE titles, the US & IC titles and the World Tag & WWE Tag titles would be held at the Great American Bash. Any wrestlers participating in the ECW faction are suspended from competition, as well.
To retaliate, the ECW guys would interfere in the WWE matches on TV, or start hardcore street fights in the lockerroom, parking lot, etc. They'd "hijack" the WWE broadcast signal and get their matches put on TV. This would go on through June and July until Vince draws the line.
Vince would finally say that he's had enough. At Summerslam, a series of 9 matches would be held (or some other odd number). All matches would be ECW vs. WWE. If ECW won the best of 9, they would get to be an independent brand and get WWE's Saturday night time slot on USA (which hopefully WWE can get pushed up to midnight instead of the 2AM they get to rerun AM Raw). If WWE wins, then all of the ECW faction is fired.
ECW would obviously win the Summerslam series, and get the time slot.
This would solve a lot of WWE's problems they're having, too. The Smackdown roster is so thin and they're constantly having to feed it to keep it viable. This way, the ECW guys get pulled over, thinning both rosters to the point that they would have the time to effectively develop all of the talent utilizing Raw & Smackdown. We'd have two brands, but instead of two WWE brands, it'd be WWE & ECW. That's a big plus for being able to keep track of who is where.
Second, WWE could add a sixteenth PPV for the year, since they seem to like having them that frequently. BUT, since both brands are no longer WWE, there can be overlap in promotion for the PPV's. 8 for WWE, 8 for ECW, no crossovers. That'd mean each brand would get 6 to 7 weeks to promote their PPV's, which means better storylines, better builds to big matches, and hopefully less shotgunning. For a person in creative, that could mean all the world in being able to build to something big.
I think that they need to recapture the true ECW atmosphere, so have the shows be taped at the old ECW Arena or the Hammerstein Ballroom, but then tour for the house shows. They could do two tapings per week and put them on ECW.com and use the late night show as a recap, or just do one hour on USA and another hour show on ECW.com (one hour a week isn't enough IMO - sorry, TNA). Simply taping the shows before WWE shows wouldn't cut it, because you'd have the big arenas and WWE sets detracting from the ECW feel.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out, but it could be a big success if executed well. |
