This week on Between the Ropes, wrestling legend and Raw announcer, Jerry â€˜The Kingâ€™ Lawler joined Fritz, Dickerman, and Vito DeNucci to talk about his wrestling career; Wrestlemania 21; the current situation with Raw; his involvement in the NWA Florida show on Saturday, April 9th outside the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa, Florida; and other issues in the world of professional wrestling.

The interview began with Jerry appreciating the use of the proper entrance music for his appearance on the show. Jerry talked about how he is wrestling around the country. He said that people would be surprised to know how much he is wrestling. He averages around 8 matches a month. Jerry said that he wishes that he did not have to be so politically correct. Jerry was asked what he was doing with the money he earns and said that he does not keep it in his jukebox any more.

Jerry talked about Wrestlemania and he said that it was a very, very enjoyable Wrestlemania. He is amazed that Wrestlemania still tops the prior year. Jerry said after last yearâ€™s show that it would be hard to top, but with Austin, Hogan and Piper appearing as well as the two title changes. Jerry said that the Angle/Michaels match was the match of the night. Jerry was asked about how there were not too many high risk moves. Jerry said that society in general has short attention spans, and if people are not jumping off the top rope or the top of a cage, people will chant boring. Jerry said that he liked it when he saw Shawn or Kurt put the other in a head lock. He was glad that it was appreciated. Jerry was asked if it looked a bit tight. Jerry said that Kurt brings it every match because he was trained to wrestle that way. He said that Kurt is not always fun to work with, but fun to watch. Jerry was asked about the two new World champions. Jerry said that there is a philosophy in the WWE that youth will not be denied. Jerry thinks that just because of youthfulness, sometimes people are put into positions that they might not be ready for. He talked about how charismatic John Cena is with his character and look. Jerry said that Johnâ€™s persona fits him to a tee. Jerry thinks that if you ask John Cena that if they are not fully polished they will admit it. Jerry thinks that both of them can still improve.

Jerry was asked about what wrestlers are potential flag bearers for the WWE. Jerry mentioned Kurt Angle, who Jerry thinks is great both in the ring and on the mic. He said that you do not know until you give them the opportunity. Jerry said that Vince will give people the opportunity. Jerry said that Vince talked to all of the inductees for the Hall of Fame on Saturday and told them not to thank him because all he did was give them the opportunity and they were able to make the most of it. Jerry said that people would probably not complain if Ric Flair won the title again and had a six month run, or a Shawn Michaels.

They talked about Batista coming out of Evolution and being a star on his own and how it appears to have been done properly. Jerry said that he thinks a lot of credit has to be given to Triple H to be a heel that people wanted to see lose. Jerry said that it is the secret to success in the business. The person who beats that man will be over with the crowd. Jerry said that it was like The Sopranos because now Batista is a â€˜made manâ€™ for beating Triple H.

Jerry was asked about the difference between Randy Orton and Batista when they won the title. Jerry said that Randy Orton is a natural heel, and when he was in Evolution it was evident. Jerry thinks that it is still there and it will show as a heel. Randy is a bit arrogant and a bit ****y and that will be there. The arrogance and ****iness was there when Randy was a face.

Jerry was asked about Muhammad Hassan and the throat slashing that he has done on television. He was asked if he did it on his own or if he was told to do it. Jerry said that he does not know, but he would think that it is coached. Jerry said that the WWE is about pushing the envelope and that is what is going on with Hassan. Jerry said that having Daivari on over the house mic adds heat to Hassanâ€™s character. He is angry that he cannot use terms that would not be considered politically correct when talking about Hassan on television.

Jerry was asked about the sumo match and he wondered when there would be a female sumo match. Jerry wished that Trish and Christy would have a sumo match. He enjoyed the match. Jerry mentioned that he worked last weekâ€™s Smackdown. Jerry was impressed with Akebonoâ€™s quickness when he was pushing Fast Eddie around the ring. Jerry said that the wardrobe might have taken away from the match.

Jerry was asked about his match with Bruce Steele for the NWA Florida title on Saturday night. Jerry said that Bruce would give his right arm to get a shot in the WWE. Jerry said that the people in the office know where Jerry is wrestling. He said that his opponents try to make their name by beating â€˜The Kingâ€™. Jerry said that he does not want to have to hear Jim Ross or Vince McMahon to come up to him on Monday night to tell him that they heard that Jerry Lawler lost to Bruce Steele. Jerry said that he has to burst some bubbles when he wrestles. Jerry said that he usually has to tell his opponent before the match that they might think they will beat him, but he shows them why he has been called â€˜The Kingâ€™ for 30 years.

Jerry talked about the case involving the burglary of his Memphis home and said that he just received a letter from the court to have him write the judge to tell them how the incident affected him for the sentencing. Jerry explained for people who were unaware that his home was targeted for a break in by four individuals to break into his house and shoot anyone in the house. Jerry said that three of the men were Memphis police officers.
