Promotional material for WWE's No Way Out PPV in February is advertising that the promotion's first ever barbed wire cage match will take place on the show.
The blurb reads as follows:
Conflict has a new battleground in the first ever barbed wire steel cage match. There's no place to run. There's no way out. SmackDown presents WWE's No Way Out, Sunday, February 20th, live at 8pmET/5pmPT on Events iN DEMAND pay-per-view.
The closest WWE has come to this type of match is the use of a barbed wire bat during a few Mick Foley matches. Foley and Terry Funk wanted to do a no ropes exploding barbed wire match for WrestleMania 14, but the idea was dropped when WWE got Mike Tyson for the show.
Interestingly enough, the show is scheduled to take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where the use of barbed wire in a wrestling match has been banned.
WWE was set to have Big Show vs. JBL in the cage, although there was talk that a name or two might be added to boost the appeal of the match. In any event, it should be interesting to see if and how WWE pulls off the 'extreme' new match.

Hardcore matches are just gimmick fests, and if you've watched one or two backyard wrestling videos, you've pretty much seen everything a human being can do to another. A barbed wire cage match sounds like fun, but I don't think WWE could keep up hardcore matches on a regular basis - most of the big PPV "Streetfight" matches were technically hardcore, and they technically sucked.
There have been quite a few quality hardcore matches in recent WWE history:
HHH vs. Cactus Jack, Royal Rumble 2001
Kurt Angle vs. Shane McMahon, KOTR 2001
RVD vs. Jeff Hardy, Invasion PPV
RVD vs. Chris Jericho, one of the PPVs after Invasion (was that Summerslam? or Unforgiven?)
RVD vs. Tommy Dreamer, at Raw when they retired the hardcore belt
RVD vs. Undertaker, Vengeance 2001
Rhyno vs. Raven, Backlash 2002
Foley vs. Orton, Backlash 2004
Hmmmm....I notice a common theme here...actually, three common things. Most of these matches took place in 2001, most of them contained RVD, and all but one involved a former ECW star
If their that desperate (which they are) they should go for RVD in this type of match, as Mister D pointed out he has a track record of good hardcore matches. But alas he's stuck in a tag team.
Maybe it'll be Taker v Heindenreich in a barbe wire cage match.
I bet its just a normal cage with some barbed wire strung around the top like a security fence. You'll maybe see one of the guys get his head rubbed against it briefly, but if you think its actually gonna be a hardcore gorefest you are out of your mind. This is WWE two top guys do not throw their bodies in barbed wire. orotn i think had to do the thumbtacks thing to make his match. If its JBL and Big Show did it one would have to die to make the match noteworthy.
