If you measure the success of the Guest Host concept strictly by ratings it is a massive success.
If you measure it by overall profitability, it is not.
It takes focus off of the PPV build up. With the ratings up, the PPV buys should go up to reflect that. Instead PPV buys are down this year despite ratings being higher. This means a significantly smaller portion of those tuning in are being convinced to purchase PPVs....which isn't a victory in my book.
Yeah I agree completely. The guest host thing really takes the attention of PPV build, which should be the primary purpose of the show.

I think things like the guest host concept are designed to appeal to "Johnny Casual" more than the diehards, so that's not too surprising.
From the looks of the ratings, it isn't really working though. All they are doing is turning the diehards off the product.
This says otherwise:

Orlando Sun blogger Brian Fritz pointed out in his latest Between The Ropes blog that the WWE Raw ratings have averaged a 3.64 rating since the guest host concept started. During the same 14 weeks last year, the show averaged a 2.95.
