WWE creative had discussions regarding an Edge babyface turn before he suffered an Achilles injury over the weekend. Multiple sources report that the babyface turn was a long-term plan and was not something that was on the verge of happening. Likewise, it was still in the discussion stage meaning plans could have changed.
Powell's POV: One possible scenario that was discussed was Edge's turn starting around Royal Rumble time so that he would enter WrestleMania 26 as a full fledged babyface for the first time in several years. It will be interesting to see whether WWE jumps right into his babyface turn once he comes back given that the fans will likely give him a babyface reaction following the post-surgery layoff.
I am sick of already established guys winning the Rumble. Mysterio in 2006 was the last guy to win it who wasn't already a multi-time former World Champion...

And this years was some what wasted when Orton won and then Triple H went over at Wrestlemania, and Orton didn't come out looking credible, though he did end up being champ after 'mania. Though I wasn't surprised Triple H won, with some exceptions, the main event at WM usually ends with the face winning so everybody can go home 'happy'.

Plus in 2008 the same happened with Cena. He returned, won the Rumble, and then for SOME REASON was allowed to have his title shot at No Way Out (gtfo tradition) and didn't win the title due to Orton getting DQ'd, only to get into the Wrestlemania match and fail to win it again.
I am not saying that WWE should push somebody new to win the Rumble every year, because lets face it, it is a huge investment in somebody if they win the Rumble. That basically constitutes one MAJOR push, eg. Lesnar, Benoit, Batista. However, I think that considering we have not seen anybody new win it since 2006, it has been a wasted opportunity to push somebody and make them look like a new top guy.
CM Punk winning it in 2010 would be epic.

You're complaining about former world champions winning it, yet you want a two time world champion to win the next?

Maybe I phrased it wrong when I said former World Champions. You probably know what I mean really though. Undertaker, Cena and Orton were all already established top guys, whereas CM Punk is still trying to establish himself as a concrete main eventer for years to come.
I did say multi-time World Champs. I know Punk has had 2, but nobody really remebers he was champion in 2008 because he was booked like a midcarder.
My point is that they need to use the Rumble to permanently elevate somebody new, new meaning not an already established main eventer.

I'd love for Punk to win, I do remember people saying that this year MVP would win because of the Rumble, I never bought into it, and quite glad I didn't. My problem with Cena was that he never qualified but I still marked out when he returned. I just felt that this year it was wasted because Orton didn't really gain much at WM itself, and the match wasn't exactly 'main event' worthy.
The Rumble itself is a timeless gimmick though imo, and it's one of the few bouts in wrestling which still remains unpredictable. Every year it just seems to go in a contradictory direction to where storylines lead on.

Think of it this way though. Edge has been heel since time began and has spent all his time as a "main eventer" in that role, cheating his way to victory and stealing the Title whenever he could. If face Edge returned to win the Rumble and then the Title at Wrestlemania 26 it would solidfy him as a main eventer who can actually win the Title and hold it for a decent time period, without marrying a GM or sneak attacking everyone and their mother to get ahead.
I'd mark out to be honest.

Punk is a 3 time world champion (2 World Heavyweight Championship, 1 ECW Championship), 4 time if you consider ROH's title to be a world title (I personally don't, but some do).
