World Wrestling Entertainment has released the the early buyrate estimates for the 2009 Royal Rumble and the number is scary. At this point it appears that the show did 445,000 buys, with 40% of those coming from outside of the United States (thus bringing in less revenue to WWE). That figure is down from the approximately 575,000 buys that the show did last year, or a 23% drop.

I theorized on The No Name Show last week that it wouldn't shock me if this year's WrestleMania only did 800,000 buys, given the state of the economy and the promotion/lineup of the show. If Mania experiences the same percentage drop as the Rumble did, that would be right around the figure that the show would deliver after breaking the one million buy barrier last year.

So much of the company's financials are tied into the revenue that WrestleMania produces that if they were to "only" do 800,000 buys (which is still a very impressive number), it would cost the company $4M as compared to last year and most probably lead to more cost cutting measures being implemented by the company.
I'm guessing we will probably see more roster cuts and this may even force the wwe into combining the brands back.

When people are losing jobs left and right, they're not going to pay 40 bucks (Or 50 for Wrestlemania) for a PPV. I'm expecting the WM numbers to be a disappointment, however; the DVD numbers should help out a lot. Saving 30 bucks for just a month long wait sounds a lot better than losing 50 bucks for just an one time event.

I don't see how everyone says the WM build has been lackluster...
Too bad for the buyrates but when the economy improves, so will the buys imo.
Big Show vs Edge vs Cena - Randomly booked and I can't say I'm excited at all.
Michaels vs Taker - Obviously this is a match people are psyched for, but is it because of the booking or their past success together? I'm going with the latter.
MITB - Can you say random?
Pretty much the only feud that seems to have a purpose, being between the top stars on a brand and has people interested is Orton vs Hunter.

Considering the matches on the RR had lackluster build... with JBL facing Cena To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. Just something they'll have to live with until the economy rises which will quite be a while and buildup gets better.

Yes, I have a GIF of two women kissing.
Yes, it's hot. Yes it's Megan Fox kissing another woman from Jennifer's Body. Yes, it's hot... owait, I already said that. Yes, I'm aware this makes me sound like a total lesbian. But this scene? UNF.
It's no supprise to me. This is the age of the download and online streaming - when you can have something for free, why are you going to pay for it?
I don't think downloads impacts buyrates too much. Out of the fans that does download:
How many felt the PPV was worth buying?
How many had the money to actually buy the PPV?
Plus like I've been saying, why pay 40/50 bucks just because you want instant gratification? Wait a month and you can get the DVD for 20 bucks. Wait 3-4 months and get it on WWE 24/7 for 7 (Roughly) bucks for the subscription for the month.
