So on Feb 17th, cable television will stop broadcasting in analog and those that receive television through rabbit ears will require a set top converter box.
Does this also mean that anyone without HDTV's will have to have a converter box too? I have 5 televisions, and not one is newer than 1999 (thus none have HDTV compatibility. If I have to go buy a cable box for every tv in my house... needless to say I won't be watching television. Apparently, the government has also run out of funds for the $40.00 coupons they were giving to television owners to help with the switch.
Quote:
After Feb. 17, about 70 million TV sets that receive over-the-air broadcasts will get nothing but static without a converter box.

No Felix, you'll be alright as long as you actually purchase cable from a provider. This change only affects people that still use antennas on their TV's. Has zero to do with HD capacity.

I see this only really affecting older folks, as some of them just have the 13 basic channels. I imagine them in their living room with rabbit ears on top of their 1970 television with the old rotary dials.
The small percentage of people this will affect, and yet I still see commercials on the news EVERYDAY "Tonight at 11, we show you how to test your tv for the digital switch".
I don't know why, but my thought on this was that if you had cable, you would have to have a cable box, whereas now, I have 4 tv's that don't, and one that does. The one with the box gets a few hundred channels and the other 4 only get about 70. The commercials around here make it sound like digital is related to having HDTV. I guess I'll find out on the 17th. I still can't imagine 70 MILLION people will be out television (and that's US only of course)....... the fact that that many people use a antenna is beyond me.

Some satellite providers around here cannot provide local news channels so a lot of people use an antenna to get the local channels.
The way I understand it if you have cable you will have no problem. It is only people that use an antenna who will be affected.
