Good news for thrifty gamers: Microsoft's online multiplayer service could be offered free in the future.
Currently Xbox 360 gamers who want to play online must have an Xbox Live Gold membership, which costs around £35 a year - but according to rumours Microsoft is preparing to offer free multiplayer options on some titles, with Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition, Universe at War: Earth Assault and Shadowrun all mentioned by name. All three games are also available on PC via Microsoft's Games For Windows range, which could be the key to the free online play.
Microsoft is keeping quiet on the matter so far, and with Xbox Live raking in plenty of coin for them we'd be very surprised to see the Gold membership scheme ditched any time soon - unless it's to deal a nasty blow against the PlayStation 3, which offers a relatively basic, but entirely free, online service.
Won't they just make XBOX live free for all games and not just 3 mediocre games?

Of course they won't. On PC they have no choice because there are much better free services and nobody is playing GFWL games while on 360 they can get away with charging for it when they don't need to since it is that or nothing. But it is sad that they are thinking letting people play three games online for a brief period of time is doing something nice for the community To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. I spit on Microsoft for this stupid move. Since there's been a bunch of errors on the XBOX 360 and people ends up replacing it one or two times, they really have no choice and need to decide to go ahead and make it free.

Lol, it wont do much making some games free, and some not...people are still going to have to buy/use their payed membership for the games they want to play...so I really don't see what the point is of having it on some titles...If I'm paying already, I wouldn't care that some games are free...because I'm obviously already paying for other games that have the XBL feature. Of course if it was all free it would be different, but it's not.

This is why PS3 needs to get its shit sorted because if enough people started moving over to PS3 and HOME if it ever gets released then Live might be cheaper (I doubt free) as Xbox tried to stop the user migration.
They're just trying to wrangle in new Goldies. If someone on Silver plays one of these games and has fun, they'll be more likely to buy a Gold membership.

“Sometimes you have to tell your agent that I’m happy here, and you work for me.” - Tim Hudson after signing a new three-year deal with the Braves.
I think it is more of an epic fail attempt to try and stop 360 gamers bitching about Live going totally free on PC than a move to try and get people to go gold. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
