The Seven Deadly sins of gaming "Greed"

Quote:
Start Repenting (After You Get Your Reward)

Our seven part series begins with video games that encourage you to grab as much loot as your soiled mitts can carry.

Super Mario Bros.

Mario and Luigi love stuffing their pockets with coins. Since nabbing 100 earns them an extra life, why not? At least they make a little extra on the side while rescuing Princess Peach. You know you're bad, however, when you need to collect every coin. That's when it's time to leave the Mushroom Kingdom.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Saving the world from Eggman's minions is tough work, especially when one hit kills you. That's why Sonic scoops up thousands of gold rings. Not only does 100 score him an extra life, but having just one ring helps him withstand an attack. So who is greedier, Eggman or Sonic? Perhaps they have too much in common.

World of Warcraft

Gold is just as important in World of Warcraft's Azeroth as it is in the real world, whether you earn it the hard way by grinding or wasting countless hours killing the same monsters in order to feed your bank account. In this vicious cycle, you become so consumed by greed that you ignore missions to become wealthier. Do yourself a favor and apply this determination to an actual career.

Grand Theft Auto IV

Liberty City is yours for the taking in Rockstar's crime simulator, which encourages you to rob, beat and kill people to steal their money and vehicles. You don't need to work in order to pay for a new pair of track pants. Just walk outside and steal a sports car. That works for us.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Bethesda's action role-playing game is quite possibly the greediest game in history. If it's not nailed down, you can steal it. Candles, fruit, books, swords, clothes, utensils, gold; Oblivion is a pack rat's dream. You can even kill people and take their homes for the sole purpose of storing your crap. You're either a raging kleptomaniac, super greedy or even worse, both.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames

Travel to war-torn Venezuela where shadowy figures pay you top dollar to assassinate targets. Hey, if you're asked to kill someone, the least you can do is make some cash. In Mercenaries, you end of making lots of cash, and before long, you'll be unable to resist additional "work." Virtual human life doesn't matter when you get paid big bucks.

Animal Crossing

Much like Oblivion, Nintendo's Animal Crossing encourages you to stockpile as much junk as possible, shoving it into your house or selling it for quick cash. Sure, you can show your generous side by sending gifts to your neighbors, but you're much too busy digging for fossils and collecting seashells to care.

Casino Games

Greed is alive and well in casinos, both in Las Vegas and the virtual world. Thousands of gamers line up to compete in all sorts of table games, such as poker, blackjack and craps. Their lust for cash keeps them requesting cards and throwing dice, even as they watch their winnings dwindle. However, the desire to win big is too great, and before they know it, they're off to a real casino to lose their real money.

BioShock

2K Games' undersea adventure forces you to make a grave decision. Do you spare the game's sweet and innocent looking monsters known as Little Sisters? Or do you viciously harvest them for ADAM, the mutagen that lets you grow in strength? Your decisions will affect the game's outcome, so choose wisely.
