Ok.. so, I've been putting it off for a while, but I'm still interested in picking up a Playstation 3. The catalog doesn't really interest me that much yet but the BluRay is a big selling point. I figure, why not get the gaming system instead of just the player, you know?
My question is about my 100+ DVDs that I own. Will they be rendered useless or can the BluRay play them? I really don't want to have to start my collection over.
Alright, thanks for the info. I'm thinking about upgrading some of the more classic DVDs I own to BluRay, but the rest I probably won't bother with.. I own some fucking clunkers lol. But regardless, I can buy all the new movies that come out in the new format, so it's all good.. I still need to buy the HDMI though, correct?
HDMI Cables are required to be bought yes, I found out the hard way and was stuck with 420p for about 4 days. I never want to watch anything, let alone play games in 420p ever again v.v

i think dvds get up converted to 720p or something, i dont think its quite 1080p but i've been wrong before. my ps3 is the only dvd/bluray player i have and i love it. just remmeber to turn ur controller off during movies or you will be recharging it quite a bit. id recommend buying the dvd remote. makes things easier.
I'm actually waiting for the Star Wars Trilogy x 2 and Lord of the Rings come out on Blu-Ray before buying one. Neither is likely to happen this year, so maybe I'll get around around Christmas. Maybe that'll be my "Black Friday" purchase this year.

As long as you have a 1080p set and under display options made sure 1080p is checked off it does. 1080p upconverted DVD just doesn't look nearly as nice as 1080p Blu-Ray.
The only time I don't use my PS3 for DVD (And obviously Blu-Ray) is when I need to use my region free DVD player for imported DVD's that are not region free. I love me some Asian cinema To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 20 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. As a DVD player it is good and as a Blu-Ray player it is great and the best Blu-Ray player you can get. With Blu-Ray still in the early stages they are still adding things which with the PS3 can be added through firmware updates but there are already old standalone Blu-Ray players that have been made obsolete by this. But best of all 95% of the standalone players have very slow disc read speeds compared to the PS3. Mix that with the price keeping it as one of the cheapest Blu-Ray players and only a moron would buy a standalone player.
