| Final Fantasy XIII
Lightning is the main character of Final Fantasy XIII, and her name, Lightning, is actually merely a code name she has issued to herself, hiding her true full name.
Lightning is said to be reluctant to talk about herself and her past. Mentally and physically, Lightning is a strong independent woman. She's muscular (but not overly muscular as Character Designer Tetsuya Nomura thought any more and people wouldn't like as a main character) but she is not sweet. She is strict to herself, to others, and has little respect for whiners. She is said to be comparable to a noble soldier.
As seen in the trailers thus far, Lightning wields a unique sword with the ability to transform into an oversized handgun. | Mr. 33CM

His character was designed with the idea that he should be able to carry a grown person under each arm and be able to run with them. He hasn't been seen yet standing next to anyone, so it's hard to guess roughly how tall he actually is.
He is seen for a moment in the Final Fantasy XIII trailers on the Shiva Sisters Motorcycle, pulling up guns blazing to what appears to be saving Lightning. He has said to be a Rushi, of whom are out to protect Cocoon, which complicates matters as to why he would kill Cocoon troops and save Lightning.
Mr. 33cm's weapon of choice so far is a large enemy pistol. As well he rides around on a motorcycle that can transform into the ice summon Shiva, although the safety of an icy motorcycle is debatable. His style of combat is said to be humourous as he is a wild character. | ???

Crystals in Final Fantasy XIII are beings themselves, with specific motives and plans, and are far superior to humans, it seems.
In the beginning of Final Fantasy XIII, all of Pulse is pretty outraged with Cocoon, and they organize an assault against Cocoon, or which Lightning leads. This leads to a quasi-revolution. It's said that Cocoons strengths as a fortress are susceptible to infiltration, which furthermore is frightening to the citizens of Cocoon as this could open up Cocoon to possibly falling from it's place in the sky.
The only other known thing is that the Crystal of Cocoon is influencing others fate as well, and choosing defenders for Cocoon, to compliment it's already established defenses. They are said to be called Rushi, and are out to defend the Crystal of Cocoon, and Cocoon itself, and to take down Lightning. |
Battle System

You will be able to fight with a party in Final Fantasy XIII, and control the other characters, however many are allowed in a party is currently unclear. More control is said to be had in the new battle system despite it's increased speed. Also the system is still time based, time still flows as you input commands, and you will have to wait for your turn during battle based on the ATB (Active Time Battle) Gauge.
The vision behind then new battle system is quite broad and difficult to follow as most of what has been learnt has left a very large amount of questions unanswered. The conceptualization of the system, which has been notes a bit publicly so far is vague and full of holes. Don't expect to fully understand the battle system until Square releases game-play videos of it in action. | Lightning is equipped with a sword/firearm hybrid resembling the gunblade from Final Fantasy VIII. Unlike FFVIII, the gunblade actually changes forms from a sword to a firearm.
The weapon appears to change forms when Lightning uses a switch on the handle of the gun. From the E3 2006 trailer, switching between forms during battle seems possible. Officially the weapon hasn't been named yet so this section may be changed at a later date when we have more information. | The protagonist of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, he is believed to be a tragic hero, like Hamlet. The Prince is the next in line for the throne of the land he protects. Specifically the Prince protects a crystal of some great importance. In the trailers the Prince is seemingly emotionless, but incredibly brutal. Breaking necks, gory impaling, the Prince spares no effort in battle.
The Prince's weapons are quite unique, and should make for quite a large part of the gameplay variations in the game, as he has many, many weapons at his finger tips. He doesn't carry or sheath his swords or holster his guns, they're simply with him. He seemingly wills them into materialization in an instant, dozens of them, rapidly. The amount of weapon switching seen is simply mind boggling. | ??? - Glasses guy

Versus is darker, more close to home emotional story, or so that is the vision Square Enix has told.
The main character in Versus is a Prince, the heir to the throne, the throne to the last Kingdom where the crystal was held. The Kingdom is modern and advanced much further than the outside world, to the point that they've basically isolated themselves within. The city nation is said to be protected by a Magic Order, whom must stand against an invasion in the Kingdom. This fight over the last crystal is said to only be the beginning of a new generation.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII shares many similarities with the story of Hamlet. With even a quote from the story in the original trailer. Little else is know about the story of Versus at this point. |  Battle System
