Currently I have an old Dell PC serving as a file server. It has gotten to the point where it is ridiculously loud. Rather than purchase a new PC, I was thinking of just purchasing a NAS (Network Attached Storage) system.
Are there any difficulties in setting up a cross-platform network? I currently have an Xbox 360, PS3, Mac and Vista all on the same network. Not all recognize the current PC serving as the file server, though. I'm primarily concerned about both the Vista laptop and the Mac recognizing the device. Any other thoughts?
This is one that I'm looking at ...

There'll be no sorrow there, no more burdens to bear,
No more sickness, no more pain, no more parting over there;
And forever I will be with the One who died for me,
What a day, glorious day that will be.
Imagine a hard drive that is part of your home network. This way you can link all your PC's to it so that it's listed as like a physical drive on every computer.
They're slower due to the fact that they're on a network, but it's way cool way of sharing MP3, movie, software... etc libraries amongst all your computers.
I like it for my MP3's. But I also do it for schoolwork, so I can say start on my desktop, but then go outside for some fresh air and work on the assignment on my laptop.

Thanks for the translation...lol
That sounds pretty good.

For all theoretical purposes, yes, but not quite how I want to do it.
The downside to an external drive is that they usually use USB or Firewire connections, so unless you do some creative network engineering they're only accessible by the PC they're directly hooked up to. I'd like for the NAS system to stay put in one location, connected to the network, so all the PC's at the same time can connect to it and pull data from it. The NAS device wouldn't have the portability of an external drive, but it doesn't really need it for all I want it to do.
ah yeah i see what ur saying, i use an external harddrive basically to download movies from my pc and put them onto the harddrive to watch on my ps3, thats all i really use it for anymore.
So I take it this has an ethernet port you'd just connect to a router on your network? I'm not 100% knowledgeable on this, but that sounds like a good choice. I've heard good things about Buffalo products.
So do you have to map to this hard drive from every computer in your network, or does it just automatically show up? I wonder if I could use this at my home.
My wife and I each have our own desktop with iTunes on each. Wonder if we can share our songs with one another.

Yep, it's basically a mini-computer with a hard drive (sometimes multiple drives). You plug in the ethernet cable, and then using a web based interface you can customize it to you how you want. You would have to map the drives on each PC as I don't think they're automatically recognized. But you and your wife would then be able to put all your music in one spot, so you can have all her Cher and Nsync music.
