Microsoft has filed a countersuit against Lucent Technologies, in which the software giant denies it infringed on any of Lucent's video decoding patents in the Xbox 360.
In March, Lucent took Microsoft to court over the alleged copyright infringement. Now, Microsoft is seeking to dismiss the suit, accusing Lucent of violating Microsoft patents and claiming that two of Lucent's patents are invalid.
In an e-mail statement acquired by the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft deputy general counsel stated, "Microsoft stands behind our intellectual property, our customers and our partners. Rather than engage in meaningful licensing negotiations, Lucent continues to choose to litigate against Microsoft and our customers."
Microsoft partnered with Lucent on the original Xbox, which implemented the video decoding technology under a licensing agreement. However, the deal wasn't renewed for the Xbox 360.
The roots of the litigation trace back to April 2003, when Microsoft offered legal protection to Dell and Gateway when Lucent was suing them over video decoding technology.
