Game news part 2. (Mega)

Last year’s Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland was not a bad game by any means but it ended up feeling like every game that came before it. Sure, they added a bike and allowed you to pop tricks through the “loading tunnels” but it was still the same familiar gameplay and environments. After seven titles, even changing a great concept is a smart thing to do, and Neversoft has done just that.

For the past few years, players have been handed every skateboarding stereotype ever coined up. The last couple of Tony Hawk games were all oversaturated with over-the-top skate culture antics. Neversoft finally pulled the plug on all of that with Project 8 and brought it back the basics -- skateboarding. Sorry Bam fans, but skateboarding is more fun on a board rather than in a shopping cart.

Players will start by choosing a skater from five preset characters that all have their own style that you can later change. Although the Smalltown USA setting is one open skating world, you will have to earn new parts of it by playing. The missions have been completely restructured to get rid of the separate difficulties and replace them with one mission that has multiple goals. Completing these goals will help you unlock clothes, boards, characters and bring you closer to the ultimate goal: becoming one of Tony Hawk’s top 8. Word on the street is that the Grim Ripper from a little game known as Guitar Hero will take a break from shredding the stings to start shredding the streets. We’ve heard that he will be unlocked by some sort of preorder deal with GameStop.

THP8 boasts an all new engine and uses real-world physics (with some help from Havok) to give the skating an even more realistic feel. In previous games, all you had to do was hold the ollie button down and you were off cruising. Now, players will have to think about gravity and momentum. Gone are the days of skaters that can just stand on their boards and zip up a hill.

This shiny new engine also takes the graphics from previous titles and puts them to shame. Everything from the skater’s facial detail down the spinning wheels on the skateboard looks great. Environments are extremely detailed and all of the next-gen tricks are here: lighting, shadows and all of the mapping you can handle. The trick animations have also been completely recaptured by the pros. These animations have a very organic feel to them because, like the real sport, they aren’t perfect every time.

Neversoft always has new ways to throw down tricks when they release a new title. This time around, they pull out the coolest move since they incorporated the manual in THPS2. “Nail The Trick” puts everything into slow motion and gives you total control over the way your board flips. The two analog sticks on the controller essentially become your feet. Flicking the left stick down would be like kicking your front foot forward on the board and you will do a kickflip. This is one of those features that will never get old, especially for all of you fellow plywood-pushers out there.

Online multiplayer will only be coming to Xbox 360 this time around with several modes to choose from. Up to eight players can compete to reach a certain score first or set a time limit to see who has the highest score when the clock reaches zero. Graffiti mode also returns with players attempting to tag as many trick locations as possible with high scoring tricks. But perhaps the most interesting new multiplayer mode is simply titled Walls.

Here players will choose a color to represent them, and once they start skating, this shade will stream behind them in a wall formation. These walls will stay onscreen for the entire length of the match, creating a rainbow web of doom. If a player skates through your wall, then you get a “frag.” The player with the most frags at the end of the match wins. A sudden death version of Walls gets even more intense as even the slightest graze of another player’s wall will mean instant game over.

Even though the PlayStation 3 will have no online multiplayer whatsoever, that doesn’t mean Neversoft doesn’t have some exclusive features for Sony’s machine. Though reps couldn’t really talk about the details, they did say “If you think about the things PS3 can do, you might be able to make a guess.” Motion sensing controls, anyone?

Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam

We saw a recent build of Downhill Jam on Wii at Activision’s latest event and developer Toys For Bob has made a lot of progress over the last few months. The motion controls feel tight and the tracks are a lot more fleshed out. In the final game, players will make their way through approximately 108 events in places like San Francisco, Hong Kong, Edinburgh, Machu Picchu, Rio, “The Mall,” Rome, and the Alps.

Now these events aren’t just a bunch of races. Plenty of trademark Tony Hawk wackiness is still included. Destruction mode will have players mowing down pedestrians and breaking as much stuff as possible. In Steal the Head, players compete for one big old noggin. The skater in first place at any given time will rack up points and also be the only character with a head. More standard modes will have you competing for the most trick points, jumping through rings, or outlasting every other character in Elimirace.

Everyone and their mom knows that DJ controls by tilting the remote from side to side while holding it like a NES controller. But did you know about the D-pad attacks, the sliding turn when pressing the A button, or the special moves only available by pressing A with the 1 or 2 button when your gauge is full. Shaking the remote will also initiate a speed boost or help you get up from a nasty fall. To build up your boost meter, be sure to beat people up, destroy a lot of obstacles, and pull off a lot of crazy tricks.

DJ is also one of the few Wii games to actually use the remote speaker. When you get going really fast, listen for a wind noise coming out of your controller. You’ll also hear your wheel slam down on the pavement when you make an especially hard landing.

If you plan on grabbing a Wii this holiday and you’re a Tony Hawk fan who’s looking for a change in the standard formula, Downhill Jam might be right up your alley.

Even though Sony has been touting their PlayStation Network Platform for a while, not much has been stated on what the situation will be for voice chat. In our exclusive multiplayer session for Resistance: Fall Of Man today with Insomniac's Ted Price, it was revealed that the same USB headsets that are used on the PlayStation 2 can also be used on the PlayStation 3.

However, PS2 USB headsets are corded, and this is the next generation. We want wireless headsets! Since the PlayStation 3 controller doesn't have a headset jack like the Xbox 360 controller, headsets will either have to be corded USB or Bluetooth for wireless. So does Sony have plans for Bluetooth PS3 headsets for voice chat? Right now the company isn't divulging any plans. Considering that Microsoft is releasing a wireless headset this holiday, you can almost bet that Sony is planning on something soon.

However, until there's news about something else, its looking like all voice chat for PlayStation 3 games like Resistance will be done by corded headsets. Welcome to the next generation!

On Tuesday October 17th at midnight Pacific Time both Xbox Live and Xbox.com will be coming down for scheduled maintenance. The period both services will be down could be up to a 24 hours.

According to a QA on Xbox.com the reason for the downtime is, "Because we're adding some cool stuff. And we have to take the service and website offline in order to do it. We're not doing it to make you mad … really."

For the first hour or two that Xbox Live and Xbox.com are down users trying to utilize either will get error messages. Later the message will change to a maintenance message. What's the cool new stuff they are adding? That's a good question. We'll let you know when everything comes back up on the 18th.

Nintendo today announced that the Nintendo DS have been driving nearly all industry revenue growth so far this year. The company stated today that without the DS the video game industry growth overall would be nearly flat when compared with 2005, according to independent sales figures from the NPD Group. Without the DS the industry owuld report a 1.6% growth over the past nine month period. Nintendo DS hardware and software sold 203% higher than the same period in 2005. Nintendo estimates that DS hardware shipments will grow from 17 million units to 20 million units. On the software side DS titles increased from 75 million units shipped to 82 million.

"Numbers dramatically show the value of reaching out to the masses with products that are compelling and comfortable," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "And this perfectly sets the stage for our breakthrough Wii console, which appeals to both core players and current non-players with an intuitive control system and a price everyone can afford."

The NPD numbers also showed that during September Nintendo DS lifetime U.S. sales topped 6.2 million units (which includes more than 1.4 million DS Lite units).

Anyone who has wanted to mess around with Prey's mind bending world now has the chance. 3D Realms and Human Head posted the following message on their website today regarding the SDK release:

"The Prey SDK includes all of the game code (for building your own Game DLL), as well as some code examples/tutorials which will explain a few of the basic things you should know before diving into the code-base. This SDK distribution also compiles without issue in the free version of MSVC++ 2005 (Express Edition). Check out the included ReadMe for more information on that, as well as other modding and development resources. We're all looking forward to seeing what kind of new modifications the community comes up with, so good luck!
